MSI Wind Atom-based laptops delayed again
For those of you looking to get your hands on one of MSI's new Atom-based Wind laptops, you're going to need to wait a bit longer. We expected the machines to start shipping already, but a big pink "Estimated Ship Date: Friday, June 27" at MSI's online fulfillment site has shattered our dreams all the way to, at the earliest, the end of June with our hands on the machines in early July at best. We'll keep our eyes on what appear to be an endless stream of tacked-on delays. MSI, you tease us so!
Update: So it looks like the delayed machine will ship with a 3-cell (instead of 6-cell) battery due to shortages. To be fair, the price is a somewhat reduced $479.

It looks more like red, not pink

That's what she said.

I don't want to know why, but she did.

MSI Wind FTL!
Pochi @ Jun 16th 2008 2:38PM
Nobody in their right mind should care about this anymore. I mean, we've all seen the Dell netbooks, yes?
: )
whowhatme @ Jun 16th 2008 2:44PM
yeah, i've seen it, and i still want the wind
Darth Abe @ Jun 16th 2008 2:45PM
The Dell laptops don't come in a 10" version
I want a 10" laptop
so yeah, I still want a wind
Matt @ Jun 16th 2008 4:45PM
No, apparently Engadget had some gallery but they took it down before I had a chance to look at it. Link?

Behold the soon-to-be market leader.
oarias @ Jun 16th 2008 5:48PM
@Pochi
You're kidding right? The only people who would buy that are Dell fanboys!
The specs on the Dell are terrible, I might as well keep my EEE PC.
Speaking of which, my current EEE PC will be up on eBay once I can get my hands on a Wind.
Pochi @ Jun 16th 2008 7:08PM
@oarias
You're obviously not living on the same planet as I am.
We'll see if only a handful of "Dell fanboys" pick those up when they release this summer. I think they just might sell more than any other vendor.
Oh, and not to ruin the suspense, but I am right.
liqker @ Jun 16th 2008 2:40PM
Not only that, they are only shipping the 3-cell battery version :(
retro77 @ Jun 16th 2008 2:41PM
Vaporware!
chop @ Jun 16th 2008 2:56PM
not vaporware when theres tons of legit reviews all over!
retro77 @ Jun 16th 2008 3:05PM
I fail at jokes then....
IT-Accountant @ Jun 16th 2008 2:41PM
This wouldn't be such a big deal if these notebooks weren't so completely awesome.
eggothewaffle @ Jun 16th 2008 2:49PM
That's exactly what I was thinking :[
whowhatme @ Jun 16th 2008 2:43PM
Apparently 6-cell version available in July.
MSI obviously doesn't put out on the first date. ...or even the second or third :( :( :(
Brian @ Jun 16th 2008 3:02PM
They will ship with 3-cell batteries, but with a discounted price to compensate.
They will contain 512mb of ram, and adding more ram will VOID the warranty.
I would love to buy one, but I'm not going to buy a unit with 512mb of ram. Have they changed their warranty, or are we going to have to wait until they have units available from the manufacturer, with more than 512mb of ram?
slumcat @ Jun 16th 2008 3:20PM
I think the 512MB is due to Microsoft's limits on what they're allowed to sell Windows XP for. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure MS said no more than 512.
'Course having it void the warranty is still pretty sucky.

Where did everyone get 512MB of ram? msi mobile site still says 1GB and 2GM max for 479.99 on june 27th just with 3 cell battery.

Vaporwear with the latest Intel Unobtanium-2 processor.
If you want to see real nerds look at the MSI Wind forums:

Vcize @ Jun 16th 2008 4:46PM
Because nerds don't visit sites like Engadget. Amirite?
And no, I don't have an account over on the MSI board. But you're the worst kind of nerd there is....the hypocrite kind.
Mam00th @ Jun 16th 2008 3:26PM
Wow, still no apple fanboy blasting every non-apple product!
Mark Anderson @ Jun 16th 2008 6:03PM
We killed them all.
huh @ Jun 16th 2008 3:30PM
bring on a touchscreen with 1280x720 LED backlit screen, 1.6ghz atom (or better), 3+ hour battery life, 2gb RAM (RAM is cheap and helps performance a lot), 8-16GB flash drive, and decent keyboard/trackpad for < $500 and I'll get excited.
BlakNinja @ Jun 18th 2008 2:10PM
Then wait for 2010

Matt @ Jun 16th 2008 4:43PM
What a shady looking site.
How much for a 6-cell Linux SSD version? I want long battery life, not this crappy 3 cell batteries. And apparently MSI isn't planning to ever sell the Wind with a 6-cell battery (on the Linux version), which is a deal breaker for me.
oarias @ Jun 16th 2008 5:36PM
@Matt
You could always do one of the following:
1) Get the 6cell XP version and install Linux on it.
2) Get the 3cell Linux version and buy an aftermarket 6cell battery (Give them a few months.)
So how is exactly is this a "deal killer"?
Matt @ Jun 16th 2008 9:17PM
I just want to save some money. I was thinking about buying the Linux version then a 6-cell battery later, but I don't know how much that would cost.
SloppyJoe @ Jun 17th 2008 12:08PM
Shady? ncix is one of the biggest online retailer in Canada actually.
Vcize @ Jun 16th 2008 4:43PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Crusty Magic @ Jun 16th 2008 5:07PM
=[
And I wanted to pick one of these up today.
justin @ Jun 16th 2008 5:13PM
Nice one retro77!
And finally....Insert Mold Roller Technology has become a reality!!!!!
pennyk @ Jun 16th 2008 7:22PM
Insert Mold Roller? Did MSI use babelfish to come up with that? IMR = Internal Mold Release. Not sure if I would buy a product from a company that doesn't even know the basic tooling lingo...
KoKo @ Jun 16th 2008 11:47PM
Wow, no patience at all! (And the MSI forum is even worse.)
There are always snags with the rollout of a new product, and for MSI, this is a whole new class of product. I can wait.
Re the current offer, the 3-cell battery is replaceable, but the 512 MB is an issue.
An SSD might be nice, but laptopreviews.com (I think) installed one in a Wind, but didn't find any improvement in boot time. But they didn't look at multiple simultaneous file access, where spinning platters have a large disadvantage (because the head has to physically move to read different tracks). Nor did they see if there was less heat generated or if battery life improved.
Anyway, you can always add an SSD later. In a year or two the price will be 1/4 and the capacity will be 4x or whatever.

It said due the delay of shipment date form 16th-19th June to 20-25th June, all early bird can get 1 more 6 cell battery beside the 3 cell come with the Wind. It is for the early bird only, This update is published on the web around 15/16th June. People can only pre-order White/Pink MSI Wind, no Black option.
Mickey Blue Eyes @ Jun 18th 2008 11:19AM
Okay, MSI, you lost my exclusive 5 C-notes. Whoever comes out first: MSI Wind w/ 6-cell battery, Asus Eee PC 901, Dell E (something)... You'll get my CC number. Fight!
Rachel @ Jun 18th 2008 9:32PM
