Everex readying 10.2-inch Cloudbook with 3G WWAN?
As we all wait tensely for Everex's Cloudbook MAX to land (and WiMAX to launch in a big way), rumors are swirling that First International Computer (FIC) -- Everex's affiliate and the maker of the Cloudbook -- is preparing a 10.2-inch "Eee PC killer." 'Course, by the time this thing comes out it'll have 27 Eees to kill, but we digress. Early word suggests that the unit will pack a 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, a 1.3-megapixel camera, up to 2GB of RAM, a 4-in-1 multicard reader, ExpressCard slot, 4- or 6-cell battery, 802.11b/g WiFi as well as optional 3G WWAN / WiMAX capabilities. With everyone and their first cousin twice removed getting into this arena, don't be shocked to see this turn up here in a few months.

"Everex readying 10.2-inch Cloudbook with 3G WWAN?" - please gawd yes. And don't just sell these in B.F. Wyoming either. :(

I'll take one.

yay for more built in, soon to be obsolete, broadband tech!
I wonder how many people are happy with the various built in EDGE modems in their laptops?
Someone should stop this nonsense.

In a 10.2 laptop, yes. That's big enough that wireless standards should be able to swapped conveniently via PCI, internal USB, or whatever.
The place where fixed radios, hence standards, belong is stuff like the Nokia N810W; where you can't add interchangability without significantly increasing the size. When your size is fixed by the screen and keyboard, you can always cram a little more in with limited cost.
(Of course, we don't know that it won't be interchangeable. Lots of laptops are more modular inside than they are billed as, so I'd not be astounded to learn you can open it and change it out, once it gets to market...)

Will this be the first Eee killer that doesn't use an Intel Atom? The first with a Via Nano perhaps? Previous Cloudbooks were based off Via's reference designs, why would this one be any different? Will we see any Nvidia chipsets in this, like discrete graphics perhaps?

stop calling things the "eee killer." Asus is the only true Eee killer.
Reader @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:02PM
True that, they don't need anyone else to kill their brand, they're doing it just fine on their own.

WiMax is 4G isnt it?
Tor Slettnes @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:07PM
Precisely. The title of this post is erroneous.

That's a pretty big risk considering WiMax is a new technology, and currently limited to Jackson Hole, Wyoming! LOL...
I think WiMax will make it, but I wouldn't bet on it to dominate the WWAN world. LTE has more upset, and even companies sponsoring WiMax acknowledge this (by also sponsoring LTE). This article talks about the battle between both 4G technologies: http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?section_id=526&doc_id=150821&f_src=flffour

Apologies NOT accepted. Is it so hard to reply to the confirmation mail just once?
