Lian Li XB01 Xbox 360 case unboxed and put to the test
Correct us if we're wrong, but the Lian Li XB01 chassis for the Xbox 360 marks a notable departure for the case mod industry. Far from making the 360 "more badass" or "more laptopy," the Lian Li XB01 merely aspires to make the 360 what it should've been out of the gate: cool and quiet(er). The folks at bit-tech.net put one through its paces, and have discerned that it "looks pretty pimp." They do note that the $150 case isn't built with quite as high of standards as Lian Li is known for, and there were a few minor quibbles, but once they tossed the Xbox 360 innards inside and booted her up, it became clear what the XB01 is all about: the 360 run silently without a disc, and only makes a bit of noise with a DVD in. Unfortunately, as soon as you toss a game in the drive noise is once again deafening. Oh well, maybe next year we'll get a 360 that doesn't require earplugs to play... and at least hard drive-based games are right around the corner.

This is an epic fail! It has been delayed over and over, and does just about nothing to stop RROD. Effectively ruining your warranty so you can have a fugly box that isn't even all the quieter. this is the biggest waste of money I have ever seen cant believe Lian Li would even bother with anything like this, it will completely ruing their reputation cuz of someone elses' hardware.
Yeaaah 3rd party hardware being stuffed into a Lian-Li box imagine that...
This thing is actually pretty good if you think of it as a HTPC. Cover the Disk drive in sound deadening, then take the xtra space and make a decent Pico PC to fit in the box. Power them both with a Power Power and Cooling 750 silencer and it would be the best Home theatre set up ever.
Shit.. even throw in a Blu-Ray player.... Who needs a PS3?
$150 is kinda high for a case thats a replacement for a system that will only costs $199 to $399.99 which makes it a lot less worth while. I can buy this for $150 or spend $49 more for brand new arcade system hardware and slap the existing systems drive on it.
The other thing I wonder is what was the donor hardware? The new Falcon systems are not that loud, I upgraded from a few year old box to a Falcon system and there is a marked differance in noise and heat output.
Falcon FTW, my new xbox is alot more reliable than it's predecessor. And as far as this PS3 talk. Sony has lost alot of there exclusive licenses due to lack thereof, only thing worth playing on a PS3 is Gran Turismo and I doubt that will warrant having a sony device in my house.
The drives are locked to the motherboard, unless you get the code and know how to switch the code over to the new drive.
@steven
Changing the drive in a 360 is insanely easy, you don't even need to code anything, all of the tools to do it are freely available on this little community that some people call "The Internet"
Yes you do, Matt. You need the code from the old drive. You can't just swap the drives. The drives are locked to the motherboard, unless you get the code from the old drive.
Saving games to the hdd this November ftw!!!
I hate fanboys on this website. They scare away all the real intelligent people who might contribute something usefull, unlike Phinn above.
i have both systems and the 360 is definitely the louder of the two.
Oh yea.. well, you know what guys? My dad has EVERY game system ever made.. Oh yea, and his boat is bigger then your dad's boat...... so there.
I'd rather spend $50 more and get an additional 360 with the most reliable up-to-date motherboard with super awesome RRoD fighting technology, along with many extras.
But then again, I already have three launch 360's that are played everyday 16 hours a day at my business, which have never had problems. I'm quite certain I just got lucky though, I know too many people that had problems with old systems.
Yeah, you're a complete douche bag if you buy this for $150.
::purchases::
::purchases multiple, douchey, collared shirts along with case::
i'm not gonna complain about the drive noise...because, when i come downstairs in the morning, i can hear when my roommate left it running all night on Madden '09. that bastard.
You d-bags complaining about your consoles making to much noise need to get them out of your tiny shoe box apartments and tiny TV-wall-units, and put them in the open and display them proudly.
My PS3 is sitting on top of my Logitech Z-5500 Sub-woofer and it NEVER makes any noise, it's ALWAYS quiet and when I periodically put my hands near the vents to check for overheating, it blows nothing but cool air. SO SUCK IT. I think the only time I ever hear that puppy make noise is when it's pre-loading data off the disk to the drive (happens when I play a new game for the first time). Even then the room needs to be dead silent and it's only the Blu-ray drive click-clacking away, which is enviable no matter what console/gadget you use with a CD/Blu-Ray/DVD-Rom.
Of course one time I put the PS3 in my small TV stands closed area below the TV, and the fans kicked in and made half the noise that my Boeing 757 sounding Desktop makes. So moral of the story is if your console makes to much noise then give it some damn breathing air.. And clean your freaking place of dust..
I love both systems, 360 more cause of games. WHo can argue that SOny makes BETTER hardware, and MS makes better software. IF way down teh raod both were to combine forces and make a Sonbox 460 waht ever, then the world woul dbe at peace. I can imagine seeing Halo 3 on ps3, would be sweet. However ps3 lacks games and online sux period. Only complaint on teh 360 is they designed it based on 2001 technology rather then assuming 2005 could have had the 45 or 60 nm. If MS come out with a new syustem by 2012 they need to make sure its without question the mother of all systems.
