Metallic Silver Nintendo DS to arrive Stateside on September 7
We've seen the Nintendo DS Lite dressed up in an entire rainbow of questionable colors, but basic silver has only been out in Europe and Japan until now -- we'll be getting this classy number stateside on September 7th. Anyone going to top off their collections?

Any news on that new model? ANY!?
Darkroom @ Sep 2nd 2008 8:45PM
don't fix something if it aint broken... DS are great... i'm totally getting one for my dad for xmas... interestingly, i know more adults who own a DS for brian/word games than kids...
who? @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:03PM
@Darkroom
My first GameBoy (1st gen) never broke, but for some reason I don't use it any more. The DS is different though, right? No way to 1 up it? Perfect in every respect? Hmm.
SteveJ @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:27AM
A lot of those Mom's and Dad's are going to start getting iPhone's and iPod Touches for their "brain" and "word" games instead of DS's, and those already with an iPhone or iPod Touch are already switching to it for that type of gaming. Including me - I've been playing my iPod touch *way* more than my DS ever since the 2.0 firmware upgrade, in part because it's just so much more convenient and always with me, and the games are so much less inexpensive with even some really good free games, and the games and other apps keep getting better. Unless Nintendo comes out with something soon to compete with the iPhone/Touch, they are sunk at least in the portable casual gaming market IMHO. Apple is likely to be announcing a less expensive iPod Touch on the 9th, and that could be the last straw for the DS in this market. Maybe even the core gaming market for the older crowd. I've started thinking about selling my DS because I haven't been using it and could use the money for other interests. Mind you, there are games I really love on my DS that make me unsure of selling it, most notably Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan 1 & 2, but that type of game could easily be done on the iPhone and in fact they could be better with its multitouch display and vastly superior sound quality (and no cartridges to fiddle with.)

i have one the silver color's really nice!
Chris Are @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:09PM
Isn't silver metallic anyway...? Seems to me the name of that color is a little redundant.
Ryan Trevisol @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:58PM
I was going to make a snarky remark about plain and sparkling silver paint, but really, that would just be gray.
i.c. weiner @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:45PM
@ ryan trevisol
I see what you did there.
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:12PM
I haven't plunked down for a DS yet, but if I do (and I think I will soon) I'd absolutely go silver. Seems like it would scuff less than white and be less... typical than black. Ugh, white electronics are such filth. I'm talking to you, Wii.
And while I'm at it, 100,000 colors for the DS and only one for the Wii? Gay.
Eddie @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:21PM
Playing with your Wii may not be gay, but it sure sounds that way.
bob sakamano @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:28PM
wouldnt more colors be considered gay? Considering the fact that the rainbow is a symbol of the gays?
cristiana @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:48PM
If the silver DS Lite is produced in a way that most silver plastic items are made, then it will scuff more than the equivalent white or black model. That is because the white and black models are not painted, and the color comes from the plastic itself. However, silver items are usually painted black plastic, so, any scratches and scuffs would show up black.
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:07PM
@cristiana
Let's hope it's not that cheaply designed.
Geir E @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:23PM
I have a chrimson red and it is beautiful, but a fall to the floor from the bed gave it a nice painchip. probably goes the same for silver paint. I would have opted for the classical black (or one of the pastel colors if you're gay or girl)
z @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:13PM
how has engadget not made any posts on google chrome????
chefgon_ign @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:23PM
Because this is a gadget site, not a software site? Unless Google Chrome is somehow directly related to a piece of hardware, then it is off-topic for this blog.
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:08PM
@chefgon_ign
Are you fucking JOKING? Where have you been? These guys report on software ALL THE TIME.

giuliop @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:46PM
@chefgon_ign
Yep, Google Chrome runs on jelly, so it's not related to hardware. And I really wouldn't know about the "Apple event for next Tuesday, the 9th" gadget, but the "Microsoft patents Page Up / Page Down functionality" looks like a very good piece of hardware.
blueangel00100 @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:17PM
All the new features and hardware improvements such as "color" and "none" will have people lining up at the store for sure.
tom @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:27PM
For kids still drinking kool-aid
bartoron @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:03PM
That's why I still use my fat DS.
prince @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:27PM
I have one silver colour. Yes its metalic..
ScOObyDoo @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:32PM
Ah Nintendo DS... The Microsoft Zune of gaming consoles...
ugotamesij @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:04PM
How exactly is the DS like the Zune? Surely, in terms of popularity and sales, the DS would be the iPod to the PSP's Zune?
I'm not a raging fanboy of any of those four devices, but I genuinely can't see the point you're trying to make.
Loonie @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:53PM
Your comment is strange.
Richard Glitter @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:05PM
Seems to me quite the opposite. I assume you are trying to say that it is unloved and not very widely embraced, but the DS is totally ubiquitous. More like the iPod of handheld gaming consoles...
ScOObyDoo @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:21PM
Ugh, nobody got my attempt at humor :D
Zune innovation always involved new colors, I think at one point they were releasing a new color every month. Sadly that is what the DS is turning into, it's time for a refresh, and all we get is new colors :(
giuliop @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:20PM
No one got your humour because it's inappropriate. The DS is nothing like the Zune; it has been selling like hot cakes because it has strong games and no particular disadvantage compared to other consoles (yeah, I too would like WPA, but I can live without it). That's why a refresh for now is not needed at all and all there is left to change is the colour.
cesium @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:20PM
Nobody got it because you suck
CaptSaltyJack @ Sep 2nd 2008 4:56PM
Wake me up when the DS supports WPA2 security. Hell, I'll be happy with plain old WPA at this point.
Loonie @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:20PM
Well, yeah, I can agree with that. I mean, "WEP"?? Who on earth can use "WEP" and "secure" together?
Since the DS only supports WEP, I've configured my router to only allow a certain list of MAC addresses to connect.
deyanimay @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:46PM
Even the psp doesn't do wpa1 just plain old wpa =(
deyanimay @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:46PM
^replace "1" with "2"
J-man @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:05PM
the black or white one is way nicer, i live in europe and iv seen them side by side, the silver looks like dirty gray

All the software that I can see on engadget is related to hardware. Phone apps, GUI's, itunes, PVR's, etc.
Ali @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:57PM
Nice. Aluminum...
Leindurstit @ Sep 2nd 2008 8:35PM
Wow, first they copy Apple with making everything out of white plastic, and now they're copying Apple by making it metallic (obviously a ripoff of the all-metal lineup of Apple hardware) silver (the color of said ripped-off Apple hardware.)
Sora @ Sep 2nd 2008 10:05PM
Yeah, I mean, what's next?! Selling something?? Jeez, silly Nintendo and their copying ways.
Apreche @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:25PM
Dang, I should have waited. I would rather have silver than the cobalt blue.
