So much for that ta-da moment
tomorrow -- Microsoft just confirmed the fall Zune lineup a little earlier than planned, and it's almost
exactly as leaked: capacity bumps to 120GB and 16GB, new WiFi music store, Zune 3.0 software with recommendations and pre-programmed theme channels, and two new games, Hexic and Texas Hold 'Em. Oh, and that snappy
blue flash Zune we just spotted. Pricing is similarly unsurprising, seeing as
we've had it for a week: the 120GB Zune is $250, while the 16GB flash model is $199 and the 8 gigger is $149. Oh well, at least we still have those
new mice and webcams to look forward to tomorrow, right? Certainly
nothing else is going on.
Update: The official PR is out, looks like Zune owners can look forward to the Zune 3.0 software update on September 16. Oh, and there's new Audible support as well. Rock on, rockers.

And it is tuned to KEXP. Someone has excellent taste.
Yep. Pabst Blue Ribbon.
You know what the best things are about Zune over iPod? (and yes, I own both)
Not the better sound on Zune, not the software that doesn't take two minutes to load like iTunes does on my Mac, not the FM tuner built in, not the much better headphones, nope.
It's that I can leave it out on my car seat and not worry about anyone stealing it!
It's awesome to not be cool!!!!!
Well, from now on you have to hide it because of the eye catching 3.0 firmware!
I'll be happy to get a V3.0 firmware on my 80GB Zune, Let's see your 5G iPod do 6G firmware.
Kudos to MS for giving free firmware upgrade to existing users.. it's so cool that I get all the new features for being an early adopter, unlike with Gen2 iPod, which does not get any new features.
New Nano< Zune 16gb (Zune design looks better)
Current Classic(sold Zune 80 got iPhone 3G "White")
so this whole zune vs ipod thing is getting old fast. i dont understand why there only has to be one player. can't both exist? i mean there are some people who like apple and their products, there are others who like microsoft. these flame wars are getting ridiculous. both players are good in their own respects. the iPod classic has looks, and the zune has more features. and the zune is not intended to be compared with the iphone or the ipod touch. they are in a completly different market then the zune is. the zune is direct competition for the ipod classic. the flash based zunes are competition for the ipod nanos, which i may add totally stole the new design from the zune flash players. i personally own a zune 80 and love it. i have owned ipods in the past and i have to say they dont even come close to the zune. so enough of the retarted debates, it doesnt matter if you win or loose the argument, you are still arguing with someone on the internet which is an automatic fail.
"it doesnt matter if you win or loose the argument, you are still arguing with someone on the internet which is an automatic fail"
I need this writ large all over my browser.
i liked my zune 30 before it got stollen, ill definatly be picking one of the new zune 120's up in the next few months
Your stupid Zune doesn't even have a clock, LOL.
There is no way KEXP would ever play Hawthorne Heights.
Actually the Zune 3.0 firmware (coming Sept 16) will have a clock.
You=Fail.
Finally, because the majority of us don't own watches, or phones. To me, a clock on anything but a phone & computer is a bit of a gimmick. It's nice but I already have something that does that (hear that iPod Touch users?)
The new firmware comes with a clock.
Really? That would be great, because I don't have to write my own stupid clock and put it in the games section & everytime I quit the clock, the Zune will restart.
That's part of the new update. Thanks anyway.
stupid commenting system. I was referring to the "lol it doesn't have a clock"
Does anyone knows if this software update will allow me to listen my music directly from the Zune using the Zune Software? That's the only drawback I have with my Zune 80 (other than the lack of accessories) is that I can't listen to the music on my device unless I sync them with my PC.
You can now stream music directly from your device as long as you're in a wifi zone and subscribing to a Zune Pass. That's one of the best new features, plus it upped the value quite a bit on the Zune Pass.
Don't Walk Clock has a reply block! WTF! just like Ocean not Clak.
i can't reply to these assholes.
Explain this, Engadget!
I Cant Wait Till The Software Update Comes Out I Love My Zune
And All The New Features Will Be Even Better
so are they getting rid of the 4gb modle then ? or are they keeping it and just adding the 16gb model
They reduced the price, 4 GB: $129.99
OK, are the new players coming out tomorrow or do we have to wait until the 16th for the software and player? I just bought an 80gig last week and I want to return it to get the 120gig or the price difference if they keep the 80 and drop the price.
Return it, wait till the 16th.
Device Pricing Information Effective Sept. 16
120 GB: $249.99
80 GB: $229.99
16 GB: $199.00
8 GB: $149.99
4 GB: $129.99
KEXP is the shit, nice product placement Engadget! Seriously, good station, listen to it on the web if you don't live in Seattle.
Oh, and as for the Zune, nice, but... ehhh?)
Yay...But, Will it have a clock?
don't recall buying my zune for a clock. it shouldn't matter.
I've been wanting to get a new MP3 player for the longest time. The Ipods are nice, but lack features for the price. Also, I want an MP3 player that does more than "Look good".
$150 for an 8GB Zune is pretty decent if you ask me.
There's always an air of cynicism to the Microsoft posts. Sure, it's Microsoft, but the Zunes are getting better all the time.
Zune in Australia ..... WHEN?
This update just bricked my zune
This is not the first time Ive been screwed by an mp3 player update, my creative also bricked after an update.
Why do you use our devices as guinea pigs MS? Where is the internal tests to keep your customers happy?
ill buy another zune if its an ipod
The Zune channels really make the Zune Pass worth it!
my first look at Zune 3.0:

I'll buy an iPod Classic When it can do:
"*Wireless Sync With Computer"
Useless. Nobody uses that, and it drains your battery. Also, it takes a lot more than USB and you have to be near the computer.
-I'd agree..to a point..
"*FM Radio"
Again, USELESS. Almost nobody listens to radio anymore, that's why Apple doesn't include one with the iPod. The small percentage that do listen to it, listen to it in their cars. Its a media player, not an FM radio.
-using a radio on a portable device is practical..especially for stuff people continue to listen to after they get out of their car
"*FM Radio Tagging"
-see my previous answer
"*XNA Games and Creating Your Own Games"
People are too lazy to create their own games. You can buy games for the iPods at the iTunes store and the iPod comes with 3 good games.
-just because YOU lack the skill to do so...and even if you had the skill..what is your point? You SAVE MONEY creating your own games..and the Zune has two preloaded games..one of them is quite popular..
"*3.2" Screen"
3.2" screen with more than 320x240 resolution. While the Zune's screen is larger, it has the same resolution as the iPod Classic one's, meaning that its more pixelated and things look worst.
-but MS makes the most out of what there is..Apple crams everything into a small screen..
"*TV Out in 720x480(576)"
No need to have that. Its a portable media player
-and yet, my old iPod had TV Out..as do many iPods and a few other mp3 players..so what is your point?..
"*Easy to use UI"
It does. The iPod has sold so much because its so easy to use. People don't use what they don't understand.
-go figure..
"*Gets rid of the click wheel"
Gets rid of the Zune pad?
-what's the argument here?..both companies put similar features (in this case, hardware) to appeal to different people..and in some cases, different people's opinions..
I'll buy and iPod Touch When It Can:
"*Hold 120 GB of Media"
"*Cost $250"
It costs $230. Fail.
- and yet YOU fail once again at an argument. Why? Sure, the Zune 120 may cost more than an iPod touch, but can you get even 80 gigabytes worth of space on an iPod touch for the same cost as the Zune 80? No..
