CinematographHD case mod conceals monster video editing rig
Oh sure, Stealth could've just phoned up NextComputing or ACME in order to acquire a beastly (albeit portable) LCD-infused desktop, but seriously, where's the joviality in that? Instead, this clearly skilled individual decided to concoct a custom rig of his own, complete with two 22-inch LCDs, lots (and lots) of diamond plate and "zero compromises." Dubbed the CinematographHD after a Lumière Brothers device from the 1980s, this massively potent video editing system also packs a Blu-ray drive, inbuilt speakers and a storage compartment for mice, keyboards and copious amounts of BAWLS. Check out the construction video just after the break.

Don't you guys mean the Lumière device from the 1880s?
Wikipedia says 1890's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinematograph
So, Engadget...um fail?
Nice job with the year typo. It's strange that in film school I have studied the Lumière Bros. a lot, and I still didn't catch the typo until this guy made the funny comment on it.
They just juxtaposed the numbers... The guy's own article (check the READ link) says "1890":
The name Cinemagraph comes from the 1890's device made famous by the Lumière Brothers that led to the birth of the world's first motion picture.
The builder of this mod, Will, has got some real talent! Make sure you check out the 10 minute video that details the construction of this thing. No it is not a boaring how to video. The video is as cool as the mod. I also checked out some of his other cool ideas at willudesign.com. In saying that I don't want you to think they're all cool ideas. I didn't care for the coffee table or the TVs hanging on the poles.
Transposed not juxtaposed. Normally I’d let it go, but since we’re harping on typos...
uh yeah - last time i checked the lumiere brothers were dead a long time ago?!
Umm...Miguel, pointing out a typo is one thing. Taking such pleasure in rubbing mud on their face is another. But I guess you must not EVER make mistakes so you probably don't understand. Come on people, it doesn't make you a super-person if you happen to catch an error. Respectfully pointing out the mistake as Bryan originally did is the way to go.
I really hope this guy Is as electronically gifted as he is mechanically gifted. Imagine the rush of building this thing and then sitting down and just wanting to build more. No? you can't imagine that? Hmm.....I need to go back to autoblog
You forgot to mention that he's also a gifted video editor and cinematographer or why else would he build a video rig for himself in the first place?
How's he supposed to know you're joking if you don't put in a smiley or an "lol?"
You fucking idiot.
Nah, the Lumiere decide was made in 1987. The first motion picture followed shortly after in 1992. TV started to catch on around 2006, and really hurt the movie industry.
Ah, memories....
Finally, a case rugged enough for me to work from the war-torn countries I'm in.
Now I can add the extra smoke BEFORE I get back to the New York office!
that thing looks like it can survive vietnam. But then again so can robert downey junior.
and john mccain.
Only if he gets captured
wow great video, I wonder what kind of computer he edited it on
All that welding, drilling, grinding, etc. seems like a lot of work. I always just use lasers to manufacture my "custom rig" from blocks of aluminum. Waaay easier.
I mean, who doesn't? Jeesh.
But it shows he's got skill, buckets more of it than anyone who uses said lasers!
Aluminium.
wow...
it looks like it was factory made
If it doesn't run Final Cut it's obsolete. I go to the largest art school in the country, and am majoring in film, and even the professors that teach Avid says it's dying. Premiere is soon to be obsolete. Don't get me wrong, all of these tools can be used to achieve the same results. I just don't see the point in and computer meant for editing that doesn't run FCP, at least for me, but to each his/her own.
Why couldn't it run Final Cut??? I am on my pc right now with osx 10.5 on it typing this... Its not hard at all to get osx running on a pc, its a lot cheaper than buying a mac and just as fast... I quad boot, osx 10.5, vista ulti sp1, openSuse, and xp pro sp3...
What school would that be?
"I go to the largest art school in the country" So?
"and am majoring in film" What, you couldn't get in med school?
"and even the professors that teach Avid says it's dying" Professors are so out of touch - that's why they teach!
"Premiere is soon to be obsolete" If you believe this - you are in for a wake-up call!
You need to work in the field a couple of years
next time you think of opening your mouth and saying something smart - let it pass - just let it go . . . . . .
Final Cut can't do anything more than Premiere Pro+After Effects can't do.
And really, I don't know of anything that you'd use in FCP that's not in PP.
Our high school went with the Production Studio CS3 and it is great (plus, the hardware is cheaper = more computers that can run the software)

what I'm trying to get out of that, is that you need to think before you hit the "Add Comment" button.
yeah i went to film school and you one of the idiots that I hate. Rich kids whose parents buy them everything. That said
This is one of the coolest things i have seen. talk about a portable editing station. Mod that sucker with a dual boot mac osx and vista . . . mmmm mmmm cambells good.
Thats just awesome! I wish i had the talent to do these types of mods!
I wish I had the money
Looks like a microwave
Wonder if it makes a *DING* sound when the encoding is complete.
It probably won't go "ding" but it will cook your dinner with all that trapped heat inside.
I guess you don't see the fans on top...
Wow, that's awesome.
My cube of plastic and 'steel' seems so pathetic now.
Wow, that is freaking incredible
That was brilliant.
great to see how people put things together... being a bit of an artist I appreciate the work that goes into things as well as the final product.
I think I want to trade my shitty ARC welder in for a MIG or TIG setup like that....
10+
Marty
Where's that keyboard gonna go?
watch the video and see!
i wanna make love to it
Shweet
This could be the son of Steve Vozniak, building the new "Brick" of Apple. Respect!
DUDE!! I saw that at NVision08
I just want to go build something now...
Nice rig... but seriously, an Radeon X1900/1950 video card and a Pentium D processor?
Shoulda sprung for something a bit better. ;D
Matt Kern, you're a total douche with a capital "BAG". I never type comments on engadget but I had to say this.
that thing has to weight a ton.
Case looks great but I'd like to know how heavy it is! Other thing would be good is some kind of built in stilts so you could jack it up a bit from desk level to you preferred working height - like those screw feet on projectors or something. Personal choice - I'd get that thing running OS X and FCP but once again it is a little annoying to see people snarking at each other over what edit suite is better. Try them all and pick what you prefer/can afford.
How many tonnes do you reckon it ways?
I'm no fan of diamond plate, but that is one impressive piece of work. Perhaps great for on-the-road editing, when a laptop just won't cut it.
The world would be a cooler place if more people had the ability to simply create their computer from scratch to match their needs or taste. It's so very A-Team, in a good way.
I have one piece of carry on luggage. :-)
Look at this nice video of the making process:
http://www.vimeo.com/1847710
WOW.
Skillz. -He haz dem.
That's got to be some of the best shop-type footage I've seen.
could i get the song and artist name of the music please.
That case kicks ass, Wish the video had more still shots of the inside.
The songs are:
Secret Crowds and Heaven by Angels & Airwaves
I can see one design flow: to access the keyboard one has to tilt to whole rig. And inside there are desktop HDDs. It's really really bad idea to tilt working desktop HDDs. It's just like hot-plugging some ports not designed for hot-plugging: it might work. Then, on NNth time they just fail. Same thing with tilting working desktop HDDs...
