It's hard to believe, but rumors of a "Googlephone" have been floating around since 2006. To put it in perspective, the
first Gphone post on Engadget was written by Peter Rojas. Needless to say, it's been a long, slow ride to get to
Android, the
Open Handset Alliance, and ultimately the
T-Mobile G1. If we said expectations were high for the introduction of this device, it would be an understatement. It's not every day that a company with the stature of Google announces it's getting into the phone game, and it's certainly not every day that an honest-to-goodness innovator comes along. That last time the team at Engadget got this stoked for a device, it was a little something called the iPhone -- and you know how that turned out. Will Android and the G1 live up to the hype? Is this the first coming of a serious new contender in the mobile space, or has the triple threat of Google, HTC, and T-Mobile not delivered on their promises? We've put both the device and the software through its paces to bring you the definitive review of the T-Mobile G1 and Android, so read on to get your answers.
As we've really gone to great lengths to dissect the phone and OS, we're splitting the review into two, easy to digest parts. Enjoy!
Part 1: Hardware
Part 2: Software and wrap-up
i was thinking...it's kinda funny, the windows, apple, and linux (android) phone OSes exactly mirror their desktop counterparts:
WinMo: slow, a little clunky to use, and crashes a lot. BUT it has a program for every little thing you could possibly want to do and is highly compatible (eg Bluetooth profiles, works on many platforms).
iPhone: limited/restricted application support, forced into apple's often undesirable usability preferences (eg no keyboard on phone, 1-button mouse on desktop), expensive. BUT slick user interface, highly integrated apps, and very pretty industrial design.
Android: a little clunky to use, utilitarian, things don't just work (eg bluetooth, GPS). BUT open platform, potentially lots of community support.
are we doomed to never have the best of all worlds, even when starting all over again???
What happened to the free service?
LET ME SAY THIS......ABOUT......THAT.............U.....R.....RIGHT.....IT'S NO i.........BECAUSE IT DOES MUCH MORE THEN ANY i I HAVE HAD....AND I HAVE HAD SEVERAL.....I HAVE ONE OF THE FIRST GOOGLE GI ALSO.......AND IT'S IS NOT EVERYTHING........IT IS NO i.........BUT IS MUCH BETTER THAN ANYTHING I HAVE TRIED.....AND I TRY THEM ALL.........AND THE SCREEN DON'T/WON;T BRAKE IF U LOOK AT IT WRONG.....OR DROP IT FROM 2".........LIKE THE....... i ......
WAIT AND SEE, ......BEFORE U TALK ABOUT WHAT U......DON'T KNOW.........
ENOUGH SAID.....
L
I think I can safely say "Not enough said."
...I'm having a hard time seeing anything you "said" at all...
Lee if you want to defend the G1 please do it coherently as to not make the rest of us whom are doing the same thing look bad.
Thanks,
Stone
Uau! You could do an entire review without mentioning the largest smartphone player (Nokia). I'm proud!
Good point. Nokia, the largest phone manufacturer, not the largest PDA type, why not mention them?
Have you ever walked into a Verizon/AT&T/Tmobile/Sprint store?
I have never seen one. I don't know anybody that has one.
I understand that they are impressive, but too proprietary.
Hopefully they will realize that marketing is important in the states and not just in Europe. HELLO!
People should really just stop trying to manufacture gigantic, unpocketable smartphones with slide out QWERTY keyboards. This thing is god awful ugly.
T-Mobile G2 concept:
http://www.talkandroid.com/android-forums/android-hardware/341-t-mobile-g2-phone.html
Not an official concept just some photoshop mock up by some guy
3 hours later...this is as heavy as a landline phone from the 70's. Can't figure where to position my hands and the touch screen either doesn't respond to what I am opening. Shipping this crap back.
You guys need to seriously get a better platform for taking pictures on. That shiny red table with bumps and scratches looks awful.
The G1 is exciting to the 8th Continent Project because the possibilities for new accelerometer-based innovations are immense. Combine satellite navigation principles, GPS, and motion sensing and you can anticipate huge advances in emergency response, location based advertising and location based social networks – all made possible from commercializing space technology. Our blog, 8cproject.wordpress.com, highlights these innovations regularly.
With just days before the official launch of the T-Mobile G1, MySpace Mobile has already made its debut in the Android Market. It looks like MySpace has beat FaceBook to the punch this time. This version of MySpace Mobile seems very polished and runs smoother than previous versions on other devices.
While the application is not as in-depth as the online version, it still allows you to do many things such as approve friend requests, send and receive messages, search for friends, update your current status and upload photos directly from your G1. Now that MySpace Mobile is out, rumor mill has it that a FaceBook application for Android is on its way before the 22nd?

I bought my G1 less than 8 hours ago. It has been working fine since I got it until just a few minutes ago. I slid the screen open so I could type on the keyboard and the phone turned off and restarted. Weird. Then everything was working okay until I tried to slide the screen open again. It turned off and won't turn back on again. I'm quite frustrated (to put it lightly). I've already sent T-Mobile an email about it and am waiting 'til my husband gets home to call T-Mobile and see what the heck is going on. I'll keep y'all posted. I hope no one else is experiencing this...
Please help me out at http://www.G1-Forum.com
I have the Android, and i LOVE it! it is amazing, has sooo many cool features. Sure it has some flaws but i have had the wing, the dash, treo, u name it ive had it... This phone beats all of them, hands down!!! I give it a 9 out of 10. I dont like the fact that picture mail cannot be saved to the phone.
I wish I had something to say about the phone. I pre-ordred it around the middle of September with a promised deliver date of October 22nd, but it never came. I contacted T-mobile and they said that it is on back order an I should have it by Nov. 10th. To be honest that sounded like a load of crap. Sorry jus needed to vent because it is stupid how they can screw something like that up.
Hey...they told me the same thing! I ordered my phone via internet on Oct. 23rd and thought my phone was onit's way....until i could not find a tracking number for my phone. So I contacted Tmobile and they told me that it was on backorder until Nov.10 I was soooo hottt! I felt that they should have told us that before we arder and give us the option on if we wanted to continue our order or not....
Well people forget that this is the first phone that can be actually used. This is not a joke.
For someone like me that has been using sidekicks for years this is the first real phone upgrade in the market.
I tried the Iphone and the Samsung Instinct and they were both driving me crazy with their (no offense) incompetent touchscreen "keyboards". Very bad (for me). I tried the Palm the Curve etc all the other phones and the bottom line is I could not type on any of them at any decent speed and comfort.
If the phone is too small I wont be able to type on it. period. I am not looking for a phone. I am looking for a micro computer texting device with voice capabilities attached to it so the G1 is the first one after the Sidekick that allows me to do so.
It's "bears" not "bares" (see part 1 of this review).
I received my G1 on October 21....Its the best ever....I ordered mine in September....it was a long month to wait for it...but well worth it....i love the phone....my boss has the iphone and he was impressed on how much faster the g1 was compared to the iphone. its a great phone...I am completly satisfied.
I've just gone through a one week period of using the G1 and the iPhone. As an avid user of Gmail I was looking forward to the unit. In short, while Android shows some promise, this promise is not yet realized. Here is the quick assessment:
- Basic interface is quite good and intuitive, building on the best of current mobile interfaces (including iPhone OS)
- Gmail integration and interface is excellent; other e-mail quite lacking
- Calendar function is rudamentary but good on Google Calendar integration
- I never got Google contacts to synchronize completely; T-Mobile tech support (G1 team and tech-specific experts for G1) could not resolve this issue. We reset the phone several times
- Utilities and general background functions are quite limited, difficult to reverse states of the system
- Google Markets are quite limited and applications limited in their scope and sophistication; pale in comparison to iPhone today and at launch
- Key board is a good idea, but not of high quality (HTC issue), reminds you of the old "chiclet" keyboards of yore, I found it more awkward than the iPhone on screen version
Overall, it i clear with strong developer community support this could become a contender, especially with better "G suite" integration, but for now it is an early beta on the OS, undifferentiated in hardware, limited in applications, and overall quite cludgy.
I have returned my unit for refund.

I think the design of the phone is very bland and uninspired. It looks like a prototype or perhaps a developer platform designed to be utilitarian and only intended for testing purposes. Am I hiting the nail on the head or have I blackened my thumbnail?
Here's an idea I had: http://picasaweb.google.com/jedicharles/GoogleSketchUp3DChallenge059
I just bought the G1 today, so far I like the phone. But I had a hard time in the store deciding what phone I wanted to buy. I also like the pearl flip and the NEW sidekick. So far I'm liking the G1. The youtube feature is pretty sweet. But I guess we'll see what happens... I have 14 days to change my mind...
Been fussing with the G-1 for a bit now - and like most BlackBerry users - find it extremely time wasting and unprofessional. I have the email "working" for one business email (not enterprise but Pop3) and AOL. It gives false notifications when there is no email waiting and email can take over 30 minutes to turn up that appeared on my desktop promptly (have it set for check email every 5 minutes - but does not make any difference). When you do get an email notification sometimes there is nothing there - and it can take a couple minutes (that's YEARS to a business person) for it to open up the mail it told you was waiting - that's on either TMo Edge or WiFi. Even takes a minute or two to bring up previously viewed messages.
Careful replying to emails too - it does not respond automatically from the email account you through from and uses your default email selection unless you change before starting to reply. You won't know you sent from the wrong email by looking at the typing screen. Normal business/email person would toss this in the nearest lake. WAIT for a bit if emails are important to you !!!!!!!! [written 11/5/08]
That doesn't even count the silly project of opening a Google Email account so I could fuss with the project of getting my Outlook calendar and contacts (mostly - some errors) moved over. No way to really sync with Outlook yet but figure that'll happen eventually. Oh, and while complaining the headset plug is odd by most standards and no decent holster for it yet.
On a happy note the browser is nice. Easy to highlight numbers or links in emails etc. Athough does not open all attachments (for example would not open a simple .tif or .pdf file. Sure that's an application in progress but an issue if you need it now...
I have not shared your particular experiences however the blackberry is favored by many business people - In my experience the G1 phone is the most user friendly keyboard and touch screen combination on the market. The blackberry is just too dinky. Right now I am using it as a wireless only device with no monthly bills and am very happy! The internet works great and it travels well. An official spec higher power battery will come soon I hope - I do look foward to a better battery- The blackberry is pathetically tedious after awhile and does not do video---its just not fun! Also I spent alot of time in the apple store messing with the I-phone & the I-pod and it just frustrated me! I like the user friendly less frustrating keyboard combination touchscreen on the G1 much better, the future of this is amazing! And I support the pioneers at Google who launched the Android platform- it can only get better and I am glad to be onboard now!
I heard about it on bbc radio.I realy excited to read it.send me other details please.Does it work as much as that says.
best of luck

Is it just me or were both reviews more like iPhone comparisons? I came here to read a review, not a comparison! On an unrelated note, how does it work on EDGE? I might get one, but it would be on EDGE
Yeah, I've noticed everyone is comparing it to the iPhone too. But I have the G1, so I'll help you out :) I honestly think it's a great phone. But I must say the things I don't like... Well there's only a few. 1) You can't take videos and 2) there isn't an on screen keyboard, so you have to slide it open every time you want to write/type something. Another thing, (this probably doesn't matter to anyone) is that it's kind of heavy. Well for me it is. It's the heaviest phone I've had, and trust me, I have had many. Being a "Daddy's Girl" and all :) Hopefully that helped... if you have any other questions, feel free to reply back! Good luck finding a good phone!
T-Mobile G1 is being talked about as Google's first phone, which is not quite true. It's actually made by a Taiwanese company called HTC, which also makes Windows Mobile phones such as the Orange SPV series. The difference here is that the G1 uses Google's Android operating system, which the company hopes to make into a standard for the future, for lots of companies to use.
http://www.g1mobilephone.net/
Hir's the deal. I have a G1 phone. Had it since 10-22-2008, the day it came out. I switched from the Wing.(Windows Mob6)...
Well, I didn't really switch, I added the phone in fear that I wouldn't be able to do the things that I could with my Wing.
Well, the phone truly is an amazing phone. When you compare to the wing and windows, the G1 is about 3 levels higher.
Windows is so dated on mobile it's a dinosaur. Windows needs to go somewhere to die peacefully. The ability to browse and open pages and zoom in and out without plaing silly "desktop" view or column view blah blah blah on windows is amazing with the G1.
Windoze is really snoozing.
Unfortunately, my G1 keeps crashing. Keeps losing the network. Even on wiFi. Takes forever for the phoen to wake up when it isn't browsing.
Tmobile insists that this is a network problem. I know it is a setting problem from the liars at google. (Open source my ass! That is an out and out lie!)
Tmobile used to be thee company to be with as far as tech and customer service support. My phone won't browse for hours at a time. (I am in a metropolitan market..miami) and tmobile "engineers" are "looking into it" "It may take up to 12 days to resolve it" ROTFLMAO!
I don't believe even the moron drones ate AT&T would allow this because Apple wouldn't put up with it.
I have never had an i-phone....I have a good friend with one.
At first, I was like, "Get ready, buddy... This phone can do this...and this and this and this"
He'd just smirk.
I'm too embarrassed to tell him the phone is no longer functioning properly.
Tmobile says, "Until we can go through the trouble shooting as outlined by HTC(the hardware manufacturer) we cannot replace your phone.
Well, I waited at the store for two hours as part of the trouble shooting was to get a new SIM card. LOL
Well, guess what, that FAILED!
And tmobile doesn't call me back when they say they will and when I call back to complain to CS, they put me on hold and say it will take as much as 12 days. (It's been 4 so far)
So here I am venting on a message board full of users who think the G1 is the best thing since sliced bread.
This is how it is and this is how it will be because apparently, many of you don't see it.
The i-phone will get the market that has gotten the mac market.
People who like worry free functionality in a cool device. PERIOD!
Windoze Mobile will attract the people who don't know any better and think that they absolutely need microsoft word or excel!
End of story. These people are destined to become extinct, or until MSFT fixes their Vista issues they can put more effort into mobile platforms.
People who like the G1 are the people who are gravitating to ubuntu linux distros. Except, the G1 is not quite opensource as they say it is. The root is cock blocked and unless you hack it, it's not truly open source. Even then...ah forget it.
Then we have two wonderful contenders...
Blackberry and Palm/Treo
Blackberry tried the touch thingy, it is now a blackberry with a touch screen.
BFD. That won't get any market share. It will only help it keep it's market share. Anybody like to dispute this, bring it.
Treo/Palm
The first Smart device.
I had a Treo300...touch screen. Browser..ahead of its time!
Color...incredible picture of device: http://the-gadgeteer.com//assets/treo300-1.jpg
The phone was truly ahead of it's time. User intuitive!
The G1 and Windoze lack this!
Apple has it, and Blackberry has it, but TREO invented it!
If Palm could continue with the inovation it had instead of tearing itself apart fromt he inside, it would be untouchable!
PERIOD.
And there you have it.
i-phone is the phone to beat.
G1 is a toy. Perhaps the next generation will have all the bugs sorted out. Until then, you take your chances!
win mob is a dinosaur.
Blackberry is blackberry. Same market share.
And Treo needs to wake up and try to get its lead back.
Sayo Nara
You are absolutely right about the G1...I am also in the Miami area and let me tell you the service I think sucks..and not just the 3g network..sometimes i get online or I don't get my calls...i'm really disappointed because I do have a friend who works at tmobile and the were telling me all these great things about the service and the phone and it ended up being BS. They are always having some sort of problem with the network because it switches between the EDGE and 3G..Unfortunatly I'm stuck with this contract....
So what does everyone think EDGE? I'm in New York but unfortunately not close enough to NYC where the nearest 3G coverage is...and since I just ordered the G1 I guess I'm just concerned as to how well it works with EDGE. I live with my roommate who has had the iPhone 3G for a few weeks now and he really hasn't had any complaints for his coverage.
Hopefully they expand the 3G coverage in the next year or so...
PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS PHONE BATTERY DIES QUITE OFTEN! DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR CHARGER! BUT BE AWARE: TMOBILE IS SOON GOING TO BE OFFERING AN EXTENDED LIFE BATTERY FOR THE PHONE AT NO CHARGE!!!
YES YOU HEARD ME NO CHARGE FOR THE BATTERY, I HAVE BEEN IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THEM AND WAS ADVISED THAT WHEN THE NEW BATTERY IS RELEASED FROM T-MOBILE THAT THEY WILL BE SENDING ALL G1 OWNERS OUT A NEW EXTENDED LIFE BATTERY AT NO CHARGE!!
SO HOLD OFF ON BUYING THE KNOCK OFF BATTERY JUST A LIL LONGER AND YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE FOR FREE - BE AWARE THAT THE KNOCK OFF BATTERIES AREN'T THE GREATEST! YOU'LL PAY AROUND $60 US DOLLARS FOR IT AND AS OF NOW IT ONLY OFFERS A 20% BATTERY BOOST - SO FOR YOU IMPATIENT CONSUMERS ITS STILL NOT WORTH THE MONEY!
does anyone think its possible for an app to be made that will allow for an on-screen keyboard for the g1
Just wondering. I work with a development team.
A comment was made in the review regarding the contact list. You commented on Gmail automatically adding entries that you email frequently. You don't like the massive, unruly, and essentially unless list of email addresses. You would like a wizard that cleans up your contacts.
We have the ability to include this feature in an app we are releasing soon. What would app features would you guys like to see?
is it possible for an on screen keyboard for text messages
iphone ++++++100 is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my experience my G1 phone is the most user friendly keyboard and touch screen combination on the market. Right now I am using it as a wireless only device with no monthly bills and it travels well and am very happy! An official spec higher power battery will come soon I hope - I do look foward to a better battery- I spent alot of time in the apple store messing with the I-phone & the I-pod and it just frustrated me! I purchased a G1 right when it came out and initially it was as this review described. However, now that I have customized with apps that the open source framework it is based on allows to be developed it is an awesome phone. One of my favorite tools is the power manager. It allows you to set power profiles so that when the phone changes from outlet power to battery, and so on, it doesn't eat the battery power up as quickly. Since I set up my power profiles my phone battery has not gone below 50% usage even while on battery all day. The main key is that I set the display to 30-50 on the brightness while on battery. The display eats a lot of power and if you abide by this rule your battery last much longer.
The only real annoyance is the headphone jack being a micro usb. Even though there is an adapter so one can use after market headphones it is still an annoyance because if I want to listen to mp3s and charge the phone it is just not possible.
I've been with Tmobile/Ariel since 1997. I do not like the Iphone and prefer a regular keyboard. However after a 2 week demo I shipped the G1 back to Tmobile b/c the email function is lowsy. If I check email more than once a day a "Connection Error" message appears. Add to this emails cannot be efficiently deleted, instead they remain on the phone until I get back to my desk to delete them from my Verizon account.
Tmobile sent me an email saying they are aware of the problem, but how can it be such a tough one to fix????What's taking so long to find a cure?
Otherwise I really liked the G1 and would buy it right now.
I love my G1 so much. No, it's not as elegant as the iPhone, but I'm over the iPhone. With a corporate discount, my G1 was only $140, and in the end, T-Mobile ACTUALLY PAID ME TO OWN IT. I wrote up my story here: http://satchel.squarespace.com/satchel/2009/1/10/how-i-got-a-free-g1-android-phone-from-t-mobile-seriously.html
My G1 is good but I really miss my windows mobile device. I feel kind of cheated in a way because G1 got all of the users of the kiddie-sidekick brand. Kind of sucks that a phone as (potentially) powerful as the G1 gets the plebes. I am anticipating upcoming updates and I am looking forward to possible flash but I have a feeling I will be purchasing a windows mobile 6.5 device in August or September.

This phone is total crap can't even download anything
The G1 is actually a really good phone. I have it in white! The G1 isn't an iPhone, and the iPhone isn't a G1. Who cares?! They're just phones, it's not like there is some kind of "phone war" that people are supposed to get their minds into. They're just phones. I'm sure the iPhone is great too, but seriously. Like I said twice before: THEY ARE JUST PHONES. People should be more thankful that they can even afford a phone, geez. Not to offend anyone :)
