Toshiba gets serious with $4k Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptop
Look out, Alienware / Voodoo -- a formidable opponent just rolled in, and it appears that some prankster stuck a Toshiba logo on whatever machine is hiding underneath. All jesting aside, Tosh is revamping its -- shall we say, vivid -- Qosmio X305 by introducing the Qosmio X305-Q708, which houses a potent Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SSD, 320GB 7,200 RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, twin NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9800M GTS graphics cards, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Windows Vista Ultimate. You'll also find a full-sized keyboard with a ten-key number pad, four Harman Kardon speakers, HDMI / DisplayPort connectors, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless USB / USB Sleep-and-Charge technologies and a 17-inch TruBrite LCD (though resolution remains a mystery). It should be available any moment for around $4,199.99, but we'd factor in a few extra hundies to have Colorware blot out the putrid "fiery Fusion" finish (seen better after the break).

it has a B key. i don't want it.
Steveorevo @ Oct 22nd 2008 1:09AM
Wow, does it catch on fire, overheat, needs three fans replaced monthly and cracks its system board every year while being kept in a pristine computer cold room like my previous Toshitty Qosmios?
But more importantly can I shell out $$$ for the extra crappy ServiceNET extended warranty that will prolong my torturous run-a-rounds?
I'll stick with DELL, HP, SONY, ACER, SAMSUNG, PANASONIC, ASUS, APPLE, MSI, NEC, FUJITSU...
in short, ANYBODY BUT TOSHITTY!
r3loaded @ Oct 21st 2008 10:40AM
Why can't any company do an understated gaming laptop?
Kamokazi @ Oct 21st 2008 10:54AM
Asus makes quite a few laptops that work well for gaming (9600 GTs), but are not labeld as gaming laptops.
I did come here to give Engadget crap for dissing the red color scheme...I thought it looked nice...
...untill I clicked through and saw the cover. FUGLY AS HELL. They should have left it solid red, and it would have been great.
Also, funny how Toshiba is still poting about HD-DVD...no Blu-Ray on a 4k laptop? Roffles.
derX @ Oct 21st 2008 11:41AM
Hell, even if it's not understated, just make it soft-spoken.
Seriously, I just feel more energetic after having stared at it.
TOSHIBA JUST SOLVED THE ENERGY CRISIS.
...though I guess Crysis would be more fitting.
KilgoreTrout @ Oct 21st 2008 12:04PM
I can't understand it either. Laptops are NOT for gaming, period.
If you want serious gaming ad you require portability too then the option is the Fragbox or one of its many imitators.
Lappies are for us unfortunate road warriors.

I love how 'serious gaming' has gone from skill to 'highest AA'
Sure, pretty games are more fun to look at, but cranking down the shadows/fog/smoke/sfx etc lets you get a much clearer view of what's going on. The Romanian kid kicking your ass in C&C 3 is probably playing on a 4 year old system with 7300/128MB graphics card on a 17" monitor. No amount of SLI/Max AA/Watercooling etc can make a bad player good.
TLDR: '80 FPS on Ultra High' != skilled player.

GAMES!
Crazy_maniac @ Oct 21st 2008 10:41AM
How can you game on that without your eyes melting from the shiny metal?
tom @ Oct 21st 2008 10:48AM
Dude...you pay attention on the screen, not the laptop. Well, I guess, if you lose, you take the blame on the shiny laptop as distraction.
The colour looks kinda "feminine" for a male gamer. It is made for chicks. Chicks that can play Crysis or Doom
FFNovaCrystallisAgent @ Oct 21st 2008 10:41AM
Wow that's all I have to say....
foo22 @ Oct 21st 2008 10:45AM
This is exactly the system i'm looking for....except I would love it in a sensible looking form not this flashy over the top monster, not all gamers are 16 years old and wanna be seen with something that ugly.
GB @ Oct 21st 2008 10:52AM
Exactly what I thought, foo22 (well not exactly, since I'm not looking for such a Gamingmachine anymore.) But that's how all these gaming laptops are: Super FUGLY!
FFNovaCrystallisAgent @ Oct 21st 2008 11:01AM
Yeah I just saw the back of it...flaming is all I have to say.
Not that I have anything against gay people (especially since I am bi) but damn that's a little over the top even for me.
Tone it down Tosh...
Chin-Poh @ Oct 21st 2008 2:53PM
Hey PremierAssassin, great to see you back! So your bisexual, LOL!! That explains a lot about you on Joystiq!

"STEAL ME!! STEAL ME!!!"
I'm with r3loaded.. Gimme a off-black, faded, dented, dodgy looking case, and it's perfect for walking outside with, without folk clambering to take the thing!

Looks more like $4...

Qosmio is crap. I bought one 2 years ago and it died 1 year 11 months and 2 weeks ago. The computer is too powerful for its own good and fried the mother board. I called Customer Support after reading that this was a common problem with the Qosmio and they were nice enough to tell me what stores they approve so I can pay for the replacement. They also recently sent me an e-mail congratulating me on 2 years of ownership. F Toshiba, they are crap, and their computers are even worse.

I've played with the previous gen in a circuit city the other day. feels REALLY cheap. not solid at all. speakers sound amazing though. i was rockin slipknot until the sales rep told me to quit it

This Isn't very Recession friendly....
Valicore @ Oct 21st 2008 11:07AM
Ugh, that thing is all shades of fugly. I'm somewhat nauseated just looking at that. Why would they do this to a laptop? It looks like some puked a fiery fusion smoothie on it.
Chibi @ Oct 21st 2008 11:10AM

Needs a neon light encircling the the entire lid and keypad when it is opened. Pure gamer cheese! No thanks.
TavisJohn @ Oct 21st 2008 12:20PM
I have a Toshiba x205 SLI1 gaming laptop I purchased in Feb fo $2k. It has been able to run pretty much everything I throw at it, for 1/2 that price. (Oh and it has HD-DVD... yeay... :/ And I got my 5 free HD-DVD's in the mail... A week after Toshiba decided to kill HD-DVD! Thanks Toshiba, I would have liked an option to have regular DVD versions as a replacement!)
The lid on mine is more understated than that fugly red flame crap! Mine is a nice black and dark read wood/marble pattern. The only thing that draws attention in public is the large screen and number pad.
If you have to make it stand out, than try Diamond Plate or something cool!
Cybergypsy @ Oct 21st 2008 12:31PM

MyHeadisFed @ Oct 21st 2008 12:46PM
Wow. Owning one of these will make you sterile...though if you get one of these that is probably not of concern to you.
Alex @ Oct 21st 2008 12:50PM
That looks so fabulous. The gamers at the Peacock Room are gonna totally get pwned! OooOoOhhh..
shadow9600 @ Oct 21st 2008 12:53PM
Wow, not only does the color scheme look terrible, the design looks pretty bad as well. Great, 4 speakers, not so great, 2 of them interrupt what could have been nice palm rests. The offset keyboard/trackpad looks like it would require some strange offset body to screen alignment to be usable. Stats are great except where they are at the expense of usability.
TareX @ Oct 21st 2008 1:02PM
Overpriced.
It kept me excited till I reached the price. You can get:
1) The same specs, better looks, still overpriced but $500 less from Alienware.
2) Same specs, bland plain looks, for $1100 less at Sager notebooks.
icepop4who @ Oct 21st 2008 1:38PM
wtf is that? the artist must've been tripping when he painted this... colors aside, the laptop is about two laptops thick.
Zakk @ Oct 21st 2008 1:39PM
That's what I'm saying. If you want a gaming LAPTOP, I assume you want to use it outdoor, why would you want it to be so eyecatching? If you want it to be shiny, and for your own enjoyment, why would you want it to be laptop, while you can easily get a desktop gaming PC for a grand?
Phoenix @ Oct 21st 2008 4:18PM
Not so much outdoor: it's for people without room for a desktop, or for people who game a LOT at friends/LAN parties.
ran @ Oct 21st 2008 2:07PM
Not only does this burn a hole in your wallet, you'll also become the laughing stock of your community.
deftoneYO @ Oct 21st 2008 2:11PM
The Qosmio X305-Q706 has similar specs but is only $1999. It includes dual 9800s and 4gb ram. It's a great deal if you don't mind the horrible design.
