Toshiba gets serious with $4k Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptop
Look out, Alienware / Voodoo -- a formidable opponent just rolled in, and it appears that some prankster stuck a Toshiba logo on whatever machine is hiding underneath. All jesting aside, Tosh is revamping its -- shall we say, vivid -- Qosmio X305 by introducing the Qosmio X305-Q708, which houses a potent Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SSD, 320GB 7,200 RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, twin NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9800M GTS graphics cards, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Windows Vista Ultimate. You'll also find a full-sized keyboard with a ten-key number pad, four Harman Kardon speakers, HDMI / DisplayPort connectors, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless USB / USB Sleep-and-Charge technologies and a 17-inch TruBrite LCD (though resolution remains a mystery). It should be available any moment for around $4,199.99, but we'd factor in a few extra hundies to have Colorware blot out the putrid "fiery Fusion" finish (seen better after the break).

Why yes, yes it can
Change that S in "Twin NVIDIA GeForce 512MB 9800M GTS" to an X and now they're serious.
This isn't an update... it still looks like (and in all probability feels like) a chintzy PoS. I saw one in Best Buy and felt the urge to vomit.
Know what else is a mystery?
Why people would seriously consider buying this (besides the fact that it's shiny as hell)
Battery life. Wouldn't expect much from that monstrosity.
+1
I was just going to comment that they said nothing of the 23-second battery life you can expect. Can you buy a diesel-powered generator as an accessory?
I bought a Q for home use to replace a tower. It is very powerful, so much so that it creates too much heat that it cooks the motherboard. I had to send it in to replace the entire board after only 10 months, and then 8 months later, the graphics card burned out. But the best part about buying this peice of crap is that it was 2 months out of warranty. This is a known issue with this line of computers, but they keep selling them. As for customer service, it doesn't exist. Stay away...you have been warned!
I played on this laptop this past weekend at the best buy gaming invasion 08 in Toronto. Played some CoD:WaW and it ran really smoothly. It does look amazingly ugly but it is a pretty powerful laptop
Qosmio's have to be the WORST laptops ever. Everytime we get one at our college Help Desk, we cringe.
WSXGA+ resolution isn't 1440x900,the right is 1680x1050,what means a better resolution.I don't like WUXGA because the image its too small,and I like this,but this don;t mean that I am gay!!! ¬¬'
Its color is too unfashionable
Terrible choice of colors Toshiba.
Terrible.
Be glad you didn't shell out for the extended warranty, I did and was tortured for 3 years with 3 totally different Qosmio models ... all of which suffered the same problems yours did. Not to mention a nice fire that caused alot of damage (thankfully regulated to a pristine cold room on a metal desk).
QOSMIO = CRAP
This is great laptop. It has brilliant colour and perfect for gaming. I like the red flaming design.
Folks what you have here is an application of the laws of physics.
Each watt of electrial power generates about 3.5 BTU of heat.
When you see a spec sheet that says 200 to 300 watts,
that is definately enough heat to cause a fire...
Put a flood lamp on your lap and you will be burned.
This is no different. The case is too SMALL. It should not be on your lap or on a pillow or anything else. It needs air on all sides.
I picked up one of the X305-Q705 QOSMIO's a few weeks ago. It was on sale at less than $1100. The thing runs anything I can throw at it (Crysis at high settings 1440x900, no AA). The only thing I don't like is the looks...currently considering taking it apart and repainting the sucker black. Either that or try to find a plain decal big enough to cover the "flaming" back cover.
