Toshiba's NB100 netbook photographed in the wild
Oh sure, you've seen a brief glimpse of Toshiba's NB100 (a pre-production unit, at least) at the company's own Mobility Conference, but things just feel a little different when the spotting goes down in the wild. The LXF Team was lucky enough to get their camera on Tosh's UK-bound rig, and while nothing was tremendously shocking, it was called out for boasting a "boxy, but sturdy construction that looks like a shrunk-down 'serious' laptop." Check out a finalized unit beside an equally cute Aspire One in the read link below.

tundraboy @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:58PM
God, that thing is ugly. Are you sure that's a Toshiba and not some no-name Chinese POS?

After all this time, and the Aspire One is still one of the better looking netbooks out there. Sure, it looks crap in this photo, but in real life, the only netbook that is significantly prettier than the AA1 is the HP Mini-note. Everything else that has been released since the AA1's introduction has either been equally nice, or worse. I just don't get it.

Heh, can anyone say Nerd Tanner? Tanning Lotion not included.
Warning : Over exposure to NB100 X-rays can cause cancer. Do not confuse with Scotch Tape X-rays.
TerraCotta @ Oct 24th 2008 12:37AM
LOL! you're right this thing is not a laptop. This is a portable tanning station. Will cause cancer indeed.
bebop @ Oct 24th 2008 12:28AM
Another day another netbook. Life is good.

Eee 901 ftw. 6-cell battery, 1.3mp cam, Bluetooth, wireless N, 20GB SSD, large multi-touch trackpad. Price isn't as big of factor. Just ordered a new 901 from an authorized asus retailer on ebay for $285 shipped after coupon and cashback.
Darryl @ Oct 24th 2008 2:31AM
Showoff.

chunky and flashy - the perfect netbook for over the hill porn stars
If you want a serious netbook I'd look at Asus. They are running a contest (ends 10/31) for a free 901. All you have to do is visit http://www.arod.tv and enter your name and email to be entered. I am also trying to win so of you could vote my entry with 5 stars it would be appreciated.

There are important things about a netbook:
1. keyboard quality (and mouse input)
2. battery life
3. screen quality
4. OS suitability
5. reliability
Many netbooks fail on 1 and 2, but people keep buying them. This is because they buy based on some pure aesthetic judgement that has nothing to do with the long term usability of their device, unless they plan to spend their time in a storefront window.
happy_penguin @ Oct 24th 2008 10:22AM
Exactly. It's like looking at the Toshiba and saying "EWW! I'd rather have a Macbook!".
Lame.
huh @ Oct 24th 2008 10:44AM
Actually, I forgot cost, since one of the original promises was a $300 price tag. Low weight is another factor. Aesthetics? If it's functional and doesn't fall apart, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
happy_penguin @ Oct 24th 2008 10:19AM
If you take the pic link you will see it compared to a similar Acer Aspire. Both have blindingly bright screens so obviously it's a bad photo. The Toshiba doesn't look any thicker than the Acer next to it. The Toshiba has a 8.9″ screen, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive and a 0.3MP webcam. Not bad. If the price is right and the performance numbers are good it might be a nice little machine.
sr @ Oct 24th 2008 12:12PM
It weighs less than 1Kg and that alone makes it worth it for me. My Thinkpad X60s already is down to about 1.3Kg so I need something significantly lighter and smaller to give up full notebook functionality.
sr @ Oct 24th 2008 12:10PM
Well said. How many stupid comments are we seeing about "pretty" this and "pretty" that. Stay away from a tech news site and go to your "pretty" neighborhood Starbucks or other shitty chain coffee shop where you can show off your stupid metallic purple netbook.
richard @ Oct 24th 2008 1:38PM
It's totally running ubuntu!
mrpoo @ Oct 24th 2008 3:10PM
That's the new Marsellus Wallace signature edition.
