10-inch Mini 1000 appears on HP website
HP's obviously getting ready to expand its netbook line beyond the well-received Mini-Note 2133 -- the company recently started teasing the Vivienne Tam Digital Clutch, and now images and pricing for a "Mini 1000" have appeared on the HP shopping site. As expected, the new rig is basically a non-glam version of the Digital Clutch, and specs appear to be right in line with what we've seen: 10-inch screen, sub-1-inch thickness, and 2.25-pound starting weight -- and we're guessing the Mini 1000 also gets the upgrade to an Intel Atom over the 2133's VIA C7-M. Not bad at all for a starting price tag of $399 -- hopefully we'll find out a lot more soon.

I'm guessing it will be for sale on 10/29 because laptopmag has a view review set to go live on the 29th. More importantly the filename of the flash file on HP's site has "102908" which to me seems like a publish date. It wouldn't be too hard to hit 6 instead of 9 on your numberpad when putting the new banner into their content management system.
yup @ Oct 26th 2008 11:45PM
Except for the fact that the swf file imbedded into the page:
http://hpshopping.speedera.net/www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/swf/banners/homepage_810x120_home_102908.swf?hpUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping&userTier=
Only displays the 10" mini 1000 content with the correct query string on the end. Removing the query string or changing the swf name to have "102608" in it will cause it to revert to a gold colored advert about saving $219 on a dv5 special memory offer. IJH had it correct - it's a hype tactic, granted not nearly as subtle as something Steve Jobs would orchestrate, but, hype nevertheless

Wow what a good price. this would be perfect for carrying around school.
DJ HaKa @ Oct 27th 2008 8:44AM
yeah I know it beats carrying around my 15 lb toshiba gaming laptop 17" wide with what seems to be a 3 or 4 lb power supply that looks bigger than a brick... or carrying around an 18 lb show stopper.
miaone @ Oct 26th 2008 4:22PM
at least. i've been waiting for this netbook, but, plastic casing?
L @ Oct 26th 2008 4:28PM
Rumors are that this is the cheaper, consumer-oriented model, but that there will also be a "true" 2133 successor that's more expensive but also keeps the aluminium casing.
This looks gorgeous though - very nice, HP. Hopefully it still has the great 2133 keyboard and the 1280x768 screen.
Rotaryfan @ Oct 26th 2008 5:58PM
Most laptops have plastic casing. MBP's and thinkpads are the exception, not the rule.
don't you think the aluminum case was overkill? it jacked up the price way too much.
like others said though, there's supposed to be an improved mini note, so I guess everyone gets what they wanted in the end, and I want THIS.
Mike Cerm @ Oct 26th 2008 4:22PM
This looks pretty good. It's too bad I already got an Acer Aspire One. Why are all the American companies 6 months behind in the netbook market?
Patriks7 @ Oct 26th 2008 4:25PM
It's not just the netbook market they are behind in..
DssTrainer @ Oct 26th 2008 10:35PM
Last I checked, HP mini-note was the only one to bring 1024x800... sounds to me like that American company is 6 months ahead of the game. I just hope this one is also that res.
Flashpoint @ Oct 26th 2008 4:22PM
I'm waiting to see how Netbooks influence this year's Black Friday sale.
$400 and $500 laptops have been getting millions of people online at circuit City's and Best Buy's for years. And for the past few years (2003 - 2006) the cheap notebooks lacked WiFi and a DVDRW.
Now the average netbooks is $400 and they include WiFi, Windows XP and lack CD drives altogether.
If I were the store executives, I'd be marketing my Netbooks along side USB CDRW drives made by my store's owned company (like Best Buy ownes Dynex). I'd sell you a Netbook, a CDRW drive and the protection plan on the drive (Dynex for example is already marked up at least 200%)
But, somehow, I just know the biggest demanded items this year will be WII, Wii Music and Gears of War 2 (since I expect the game disks themselves to sell out) I'm going to do what I did last year - buy a bunch of Wii's and sell them on christmas eve at a profit over $150. One of the Wii's I sold last christmas I made $400 for.
Patriks7 @ Oct 26th 2008 4:27PM
You were selling Wii's on Christmas eve?
What a sad life you live my friend..
decapitor @ Oct 26th 2008 4:28PM
Being a scalper isn't something to be proud about. It's not clever. You're a leech. Think about it.
lowdef @ Oct 26th 2008 4:32PM
they have a month and a half to make millions of gears 2 discs. they will NOT run out you jack ass.
KAIKAI @ Oct 26th 2008 5:18PM
i wish this kinda shit was illegal.
granted we would lose gamestop....but no biggie there right....??
Kris @ Oct 26th 2008 5:26PM
They haven't sold out of a video game in... what, like 6 years? Yeah, Gears of Wars is going to sell out... right...
Rollins @ Oct 26th 2008 5:27PM
@Flashpoint
Agreed on the Wii and Wii Music, but there's no way in Hell that Gears of War 2 will sell out.
@decapitator
Cry more. If you're willing to make the investment, there's nothing wrong with taking advantage of supply and demand.
Rollins @ Oct 26th 2008 5:28PM
Ugh, *decapitor. Stupid comment system.
Boards of Canada @ Oct 26th 2008 5:57PM
huuuu... and what about finding a real job?? a job you actually enjoy and make money with?
Mike @ Oct 26th 2008 6:51PM
LOL i love these fools....
Flashpoint, more power to ya.
And for the people above saying "ZOMG SCALPERS ARE THE DEVIL!!!"
uhhh....Hello?....How many people use eBay?
I've been selling stuff on eBay and StubHub for 3 years and it can become a career easily if you do it full time and play your cards right.
I made $40000 last year just selling tickets ALONE to hockey games. Not including football, concerts, or stage performances....total is around $75000. And I'm listing tickets and packaging purchases for 1 hour every night after i'm done with my normal job.
decapitor @ Oct 26th 2008 7:50PM
@ everyone on this post who has rationalized the ethics of scalping:
Buying goods at retail and reselling them for profit is scalping. Scalping is illegal in 38 states, and the remaining 12 at least have regulations that limit the percentage increase allowed over the msrp. We as a society have deemed it an amoral action. Enforcement of scalping laws is almost nonexistent, because if you think about it we would need an immense task force and there are much more important things wrong in our society. Ticket agencies like Stubhub and Ticketmaster have lobbied for relaxation of these laws, because while they may say that their main business is legitimate and that they are offering a safe place for season ticket holders etc. to sell tickets that they cannot use, their real business is in taking percentages of ticket sales, so they of course want to see tickets sold for as much as possible. I have researched why they are allowed to stay in business and it has become clear that there is money changing hands between ticket agencies and politicians. As for Ebay, of course it exists and can be used to sell tickets etc at a mark up, but that doesn't mean it's legal to do so. Ebay is meant for other more legitimate commerce. My point is, you can feel free to scalp all you want; your ethical decisions are your own and the government is clearly not going to step in any time soon, but don't you DARE post here insinuating that the rest of us law abiding citizens are chumps and crybabies. YOU are the reason I can't afford to take my son to Fenway Park to see a ballgame.
Rollins @ Oct 26th 2008 11:30PM
decapitor, I tried to read your post, but all I could hear whining.
It's not my fault if I put a Wii on eBay and the people bid it up far over MSRP.
Not all of your supposed "law-abiding" people are chumps and crybabies.
Just you.
bungsana @ Oct 29th 2008 1:49PM
@ decapitor:
actually, its called being a reseller and/or a distributor. While you may not be the official one, that is what you are doing by buying, then reselling product. unless its intellectual property that is copyrighted and it is an end product (not repackaged/rebranded), its completely legal.
if it is, you are claiming that all distributors and resellers are illegal.
decapitor @ Oct 26th 2008 4:24PM
This looked exciting until I saw the trackpad buttons on the side a la Aspire One...
sockatume @ Oct 26th 2008 4:39PM
If it's anything like the Mini Note, the buttons are a million times better than the Aspire One. IMO, what ruins the Aspire One's buttons isn't so much the position as the awful hard, clicky action you have to lean into. If you could just dab them then it would be much better.
ilh @ Oct 26th 2008 5:00PM
Indeed, not nice to work with. Has anyone done both a proper keyboard and touchpad yet? I can't think of any, seems it's either the the touchpad buttons, right shift or function keys that are gimped in some way.
telepheedian @ Oct 26th 2008 5:11PM
The ASUS N10 has a proper keyboard, I wonder why they stuck with the lame right shift key for the Eee line, the slim one was released after they made the N10.
Phoenix987 @ Oct 26th 2008 6:32PM
Wasn't the HP model that had the buttons on the side out months before the Aspire One?
The buttons on the side isn't something new for HP.
Joshua Walters @ Oct 26th 2008 4:26PM
And they finally stuck an Atom in it.
I kinda like this. Kinda.
I still want a cheap netbook with a decent touch screen.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/9965-gigabyte-m912v-netbook-hands-preview.html
This was the only decent review of it that i found. Too bad its about $850
1234321 @ Oct 26th 2008 4:30PM
Hope they keep the HD resolution from the 2133
and I was hoping for a VIA Nano CPU instead
Ashwin @ Oct 26th 2008 4:40PM
A VIA Nano would not fit in a netbook. It consumes around 25W, compared to 2.5W for the Atom.
Kamokazi @ Oct 26th 2008 7:37PM
There are a few versions that use the Nano architecture...some work in netbooks:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/first-via-nano-based-netbook-spotted/
Ender @ Oct 26th 2008 4:41PM
If I can install Ubuntu on this thing, then yes, I will probably buy it.
chefgon_ign @ Oct 26th 2008 4:51PM
Why wouldn't you be able to? I'm pretty sure you can install Linux on your digital calculator watch.
paul-engadget @ Oct 26th 2008 5:28PM
actually, IBM did have a watch that ran linux, but it was only a lab prototype.
you can still buy a PalmOS watch, if you look around hard enough - google for "fossil palm watch".
Ashwin @ Oct 26th 2008 4:50PM
When are they going to make higher end notebooks (non netbook) of this size? I think a Core 2 Solo/Duo ULV could definitely make it into a notebook of this size, and would be a far faster. With a lower power chipset (Netbooks actually do not use the lowest power chipset available), battery life probably would not suffer noticeably. While I think that netbooks in their current form were a great idea, it is difficult to do real work on them. If priced around $900-$1000, they would fly off the shelves.
Patriks7 @ Oct 26th 2008 5:45PM
So first people complain about 400$ being too much for a netbook, and now you are suggesting to make one with a better processor for 1000$?
I don't think you will need a better processor for gaming in these netbooks.. and if you do you are not in the correct market..
honeybee @ Oct 26th 2008 5:58PM
@ Ashwin,
you can go for a Panasonic R7 or R5 if you can find one. it has almost everything you want.
it's 2 lbs only (including the battery), waterproof keyboard, 17mm keyspan
plus Panasonic is really good at power management: 8 hours with standard configuration according to their website.
michael leimon @ Oct 26th 2008 4:53PM
Am I the only person who is dissappointed that this thing doesn't have the via nano.
zomg0t @ Oct 26th 2008 4:58PM
No. 1234321 is also dissapointed.
Ian @ Oct 26th 2008 8:49PM
I am as well.
However, with an Atom, there's a small possibility that this thing may be really compatible with OSx86. It's not a make or break, though.
ajh @ Oct 26th 2008 4:59PM
I just got off of the phone HP Sales, and the banner was put there early to "create awareness". They said that it probably wouldn't be available for purchase today, but to check back later this week. Also, they said it still has a VIA processor but didn't know which one (fingers crossed for nano!)
crzyjamaican46 @ Oct 26th 2008 5:06PM
No my perfect netbook would have the nano and discrete nvidia graphics. a hybrid 32gb ssd w/ a real spinning hd for media and a touchscreen would also be great. a real premium netbook. sorta like a baby tx2000.
golfreak @ Oct 26th 2008 5:14PM
If they manage to keep the 1280x768 resolution like their previous 8.9 minibook, it will have a leg up on everyone.
I will ditch my Eee 900ha and get this instead.
Same 1024x600 as everyone else, then its just another blah.
Ian @ Oct 26th 2008 6:53PM
Of course they've downgraded to a 1000 x 600 resolution screen just like everyone else. They're not going to offer you a 1280 x 800 screen for so much less than an EeePC.
I bet you their high end model will have the nice screen. Perhaps it'll even have the same casing as the current Mini-note 2133 (which is beautiful on a netbook).
I'm also hoping that one of the models will have the VIA Nano processor as well.
Knives_Out @ Oct 26th 2008 7:59PM
yep... 1280x768. love it!
eggothewaffle @ Oct 26th 2008 5:17PM
That is so hotness.
