HP Vivienne Tam Edition Mini 1000 Digital Clutch now available

Well, we heard that the Vivienne Tam-designed Mini 1000 was coming in December, and here it is, available to order on HP's site. The custom 10-inch netbook is, as expected, sporting a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom with 1GB of RAM, plus an up to 60GB hard drive -- a little smaller than the 80GB we initially heard about. The fashion-conscious laptop is less than an inch thick and has a starting weight of 2.45 pounds, and though it's not exactly an example of "understated elegance," those who want to start (loudly) classing up their act can do just that for a starting price of $699.

Yikes, that would stick out like a sore thumb anywhere except for a fashion show, but that's the point right?
It's to FUGLY for fashion
i am not sure where FUGLY is located. and why is it going there?
Ridiculously high priced. Additional $200 for 3G/EV-DO card AND service activation REQUIRED. Plus no option to get a 6-cell battery
Of course it's overpriced! They keep adding on stuff they don't need and keep missing the important things!
Add on a 1280x800 touchscreen, a 6-cell battery, and a 64GB SSD!
Honey, Merry christmas, I bought you a "HP Vivienne Tam Edition Mini 1000 Digital Clutch" Laptop Computing Device!....Honey?...??
I think my sister would love that, but that's quite expensive for a netbook.
Who is Vivienne tam. That thing sticks out. the price is disappointing. I don't know what that translates to GBP.
Vivienne Tam (譚燕玉, pinyin: Tán Yànyù) is a fashion designer based in New York. She was born and raised in Hong Kong. She attended Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Her clothing brand is named after her and is inspired by Chinese design and modern fashion. The theme of first collection was EAST WIND CODE. Her shops can be found in most major cities around the world.
She authored "China Chic", a book on Chinese style.
Vivienne Tam also appears on Stardoll.com. On Stardoll.com she has her own suite and brand name.

Fashion designer? Apparently not a very good one..
For every posting on Engadget, there is someone who will scream fugly, regardless of whether it is a phone, computer, clothing or Korean model. Quite sad, really.
Obviously being a Hong Kong / New Yorker I admire Vivienne Tam,but as a male I will reserve judgment on her fashion ideals.
FUGLY
+1
There is nothing else that needs to be said.
Next thing you know Engadget will be doing reviews on Bedazzlers.
I think I'd take an HP Jackie Chan Edition over this, whatever that might look like...
It'd have various broken parts inside from all the stunts it did when it was younger.
The text-to-speech program would be the voice of Chris Tucker.
"Do yoo understaaand the words that ah'm translatin'??"
I hear that the Steven Segal edition comes with all of his movies. ~_~
You just wanted to use the emoticon, didn't you dale...
yes, jabber. d¬_¬b
Awesome 700 plus tax for a netbook and it even comes in a ridiculous red color with wacky designs on it. Thanks HP way to douche it up.
I've been eyeing one of these for my girlfriend (she's in fashion) since the concept pictures out a while ago. It is a bit pricey considering that you can configure the regular Mini 1000 with the 16GB SSD and 10 inch LED screen for only $479, but it does come with a years worth of accidental damage coverage - a must with my girlfriend. Will post up some more info once it arrives, though that's probably a few weeks out.
Anyone know how much they profit off of this?
you people wouldnt understand fashion so you better stick to your 'Looms
Well I definitely think it hits it's Chinese influenced design just right, although personally I think the flower print she chose is kinda terrible. The red and gold definitely give it an interesting look though.
But yes it does scream look at me. Still, I think it looks pretty good-swap out the flower design for a nicer looking flower and I think it'd be just about perfect.
The gold battery has kinda inspired me though, I have a pretty simple black and white skin on my EEE 1000H and I think two-toning the battery will give it that final bit to take it into $699 designer laptop land. My mom couldn't even tell it was a skin because I applied it damned near perfectly.
BTW if you're a guy and you're thinking why you would ever buy it...you should probably realize Vivienne Tam designed this for girls if it weren't obvious enough by the gigantic pink flower.
On a side note, my mom thought my laptop had a flower pattern on it and asked me why I bought a girly laptop...when my laptop in fact has no flowers on it at all. I think she just wanted my laptop, lol.
Eh, a bunch of guys dissing a design that's obviously targeted towards women?
You have to realize that half the socially-inept computer nerds on here have probably never actually talked to a woman in their life.
Hi ppl,
I want to buy either this notebook (HP Mini 1000 Vivienne) or ASUS EeePC S101 as a present for one wonderful woman (an angel ;-).
I don't care about the price (but I don't want to buy Sony TT either) so which one should I choose?
She is a computer total newbie, so I don't think that keyboard really matters, e.g. HP has better keyboard than ASUS (that is what I've heard). I like HP Mini more because of flowers but I don't like its battery life. Asus S101 on the other hand isn't a netbook for women, it looks too cold.
I don't really know, thanks for any answers, just pick one of these 2, not any other competitors (dell, samsung, acer...)
Umm... did you try buying diamonds?
@Aaquib:
And you wonder why you don't get any.
you gonna buy grandma a notebook for present? how sweet!
@ guy
Granny is waiting for the River Tam version.
How well do you know her? Are you certain she will love the flower design? Not all girls do - some girls don't like faux-Asian / real Asian, some don't like bright red... If you're at all uncertain, go for the S101's more conservative and easier to love by all design.
wow, thanks for many insightful answers, engadget crowd is da beste...
I've made the decision, I am buying ASUS S101 in champagne color which is simply too sexy...
I have just 2 problems.
1. you can't find it anywhere but asus.com web
2. even if you can find it, I doubt it will come to europe, London
well, at least I know what I am looking for on ebay and these hong-kong pirates ;-)
Oh, HP, what happened to you? I had such high hopes after seeing the build quality of the 2133, but I wanted to wait till you decided to use a better processor. Now you bring this thing out, with either a horribly slow iPod hard drive or an expensive (and still slow) SSD, an inferior screen, no ExpressCard slot...you were on the right track, but you left it.
Ewwww. For $300 more, you can get a "real" computer. A Mac.
I think it's purdy, so 'dere. ;) It's also ridiculously overpriced, though.
Its ugly and its expensive. For $300 more I can get a brand new Mac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sunglasses are required!!!
Where's the 6-Cell Mini 1000? I'm waiting for that to arrive... or if the Samsung NC10 hits Canada first, it'll be my netbook purchase. The race is on.
Holy crap.
Anyone who don't know who Vivienne Tam is, never banged a model chick before.
My gf is pondering to get this or a $600 bracelet that matches her ring. Maybe i should just dump her.
