PS3 teardown: 30% fewer parts, $300 cheaper
When the gang at iSuppli first tore open a PlayStation 3 back in November 2006, they pegged the cost to build the $500 model was $805 in materials. Now they're back and looking inside the $400 version, which they estimate is $448.73 in parts -- still a loss leader for the company, but only by about one Ulysses S. Grant this time. The number of components has also dropped from 4,048 to just 2,820, and both the Cell processor and NVIDIA GPU have slimmed down from 90nm to 65nm. They suspect Sony might be able to lower costs and turn a profit sometime in 2009, but while you may be rooting for this generation's underdog, don't get your hopes up for a price drop any time soon.

I agree with pretty everything you said, but FFXIII doesn't sound like hundreds of hours of fun. After a hundred hours or so, games tend to become a little repetitive.
I liked XII though, whereas most people I know didn't, so meh :P
Quite an expensive piece of hardware they're selling - mostly due to the Bluray player correct? I'm still biding my time for a price drop before I bite - they still need to invest more time into their online interface.
sooo glad i got the last gen 80 right about now
I really wish you fools would stop crying about price, the PS3 is literally cheaper in the long run...
Xbox Break down for me:
$199 - Console (not sure if the $199 models can accept a drive - I have 3 Pro's - none work.. even after 12 replacements)
$59 - Wireless Controller with two double a batteries (plus all the double a batteries you need to buy every freaking other day..)
$29 - Battery pack and cable to charge wireless controller........(rip off - so in total for an extra full featured controller, it costs $90)
$99 - WiFi adapter
$299 - Proprietary Hard-drive
$60 - Xbox Live (which you need to pay every 12 months..)
Yet, the console offers NOTHING technically new besides 'a few' good exclusive games and not worth the 60 dollars social features (I'd rather use Facebook, it's free..). I'm still up creek without a paddle on HD media playback (cough Blu-ray). Oh and lastly it looks like a Fisher Price toy with my theater system..
PS3 Break down for me:
$399 - FOR ONE SINGLE CONSOLE, Did not have to buy 3 and go through hell getting them replaced every week.
$54 - DualShock 3 Wireless controller with built in Li-ion battery (Suck it Microsoft..)
Offers so much in multimedia functions, I can load on any random format/encoded video and it plays, lots of great games, some exclusives the Xbox doesn't have that I gotta have (I'm not gonna name them we all know them...lol). Oh and it's online is free (love that).. Did I mention it matches my TV perfectly to a Tee? Sony nailed that...
My Point:
It's $745 for the 360 compared at $453 for the PS3 to get both console at par with each-other specs wise for my needs - even then the 360 falls short with no Blu-ray playback. And In addition to the spec differences and price differences, let's face it - it's a Microsoft product, it's jynx'd. You're asking for headaches when you buy one, look at me, 3 bought, 12 replacements and still waiting to get a working one! I think the only good I have to say about the 360 is the controller is comfortable like hell.
Regardless of what console is better, it's all opinion... Just like why some people prefer Macs over Windows and other prefer Linux.
All I gotta say is all console manufactures need to drop the prices and rapidly.. The economy is crap, everyone would rather keep their money for a rainy day then spend it on nonsense. Hint hint Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo - make it cheap or give us more then a few bullet points why it's great, make us think we need it to survive.
I noticed A DECENT GAME LIBRARY is not part of your breakdown...
>First of all Microsoft is offering a hard drive to core and arcade owners for $20 dollars. That'll give you a fully functional 360 for just $220.
>The wireless controller is INCLUDED in the ($199) Arcade package.
>You can simply get rechargeable AA's (which nearly all of us already have) for your 360 controller. Also, unlike ps3's controller's batteries (which run out in just 18hrs), you don't have to wait for the charging to complete when batteries run out, you can simply swap in a new or charged pair (which tests show lasts 57hrs).
>You can modify a linksys router (which many of us already have) for cheap to get WIFI.
>Xbox live is $40 on buy.com (and many other internet retailers), which costs 11 cents a day for a vastly superior online service. Now if you can't afford that, I feel sorry for you.
>PS3 has blu-ray? 360 streaming HD netflix. BTW, streaming HD is gaining market share MUCH faster than blu-ray is (which isn't doing so well).
>The latest 360 jasper models completely resolved the RRoD issue, and Microsoft will promptly replace any previous model that has the issue.
Ultimately though, it all boils down to the library of games. 360 simply has a bigger library and also has backward compatibility with the original xbox.
Your a Retard!! What's are those, Made up prices?
Buy a $199 Arcade and you can play 99.9999% of 360 games ever made for the system!!
Wireless controllers can be found for $38 NEW NOT $59!!! Cheaper then a PS3 controller!!!!
No need for Battery Packs!! Controllers run on 2 AA Battery's. You can buy a cheap AA Recharger for hardly anything at just about any place you want. PS3 controllers have a NON-Replaceable battery that will charge up less and less over time until it's DEAD! Then you have to buy another controller.
Wifi, $99, there are cheaper ways, but I have NO Wifi, I don't want wireless on my console and so I didn't buy it. WOW, I didn't spend that $99.
$299 Hard Drives?? HAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Are you kidding? Is this Triple the price? When the 120 gig drive came out NEW it was only $179. High, but no anywhere near $299. Besides there's been deals going on for getting a wireless Controller and a 20 gig Hard drive for under $50. A new 60 gig drive right now is $99. You can buy used 360 drives for cheap also. Under $40 for a 20 gig. Plug it into your Arcade and your ready to go.
$60 for Xbox LIVE? Where are you getting these prices? At MOST it's $49.99 a year, I can get a 12+1 month(13 month) card for $38 from newegg.com. That's less then $3 a month. For service FAR FAR better then that PS3 garbage that's not even in the same league as XBox LIVE.
Lets see, a $199 XBox 360 + Extra Controller $38 = $237. Cheaper then a Wii, with a extra controller, and can play ANY GAME YOU WANT!!! Add a cheap 20 gig Hard Drive from ebay for under $40 is $277. Or forget this all together and buy a 360 Pro system for $299 and have everything. If you can't afford $3 a month for ONline gaming, then maybe you shouldn't be gaming. Most things in life aren't FREE.
To your $399 PS3 who gives a crap system that lacks games, and I'm really getting tired of the small list of exclusives that are always posted that I just don't care about and seems most others don't either as sales are so POOR!!!
The 360 has 10 times the games library of the PS3. For all the RROD problems the 360 has, People would rather go though 2,3,4,5,6 systems then get a PS3. Sony should thank they're lucky stars because if the 360 was problem free, sales would have been far higher, and the PS3 would have been a failed system, another Dreamcast.
If your really paying those prices for 360 Hardware, your a Idiot and getting taken. You know what, Stay with your PS3. You belong there. With the other Idiots there on HOME, where there seems to be a whole lot of dummy's out of control. You fit right in.
Xbox Break down for idiots:
$199 - Console (they can and will accept hard drives.. you bought 3, you broke 3...)
$59 - Wireless Controller with two double a batteries (it comes with a controller... so dont add this to the list... and dont talk shit about buying extra batteries, if your gonna have a battery pack in the next item on the list)
$29 - Battery pack and cable to charge wireless controller........(k... since the ps3 charge cables are free right?)
$99 - connect your ethernet cable
$299 - Proprietary Hard-drive
Fools... Learn to comprehend English!
A) I own the first 3 generations of Xbox's all Pro models. Reason I was unsure about the $199 arcade model not being able to accept hard-drives is because I was told by an Xbox fanboy it doesn't. So suck it. =) I wouldn't waste my money buying or researching that fact anyways, as I got 3 paperweights already, don't need a fourth - now that that is clear.
My Jasper should be coming soon though, it'll be an utter failure no doubt (I'm counting on it after looking at Jasper hardware break-downs). Let's see if it turns over dead from 1-3 hours of play time like all the rest I've gotten - Gotta love Microsoft quality, GO VISTA!... OH and what proof do you have that Jasper's solved the RRoD? Microsoft said that with every new generation, here we are at the 4th or 5th and the problem is still at large. I wouldn't take Microsofts word for it, all they likely did was stick 1000 360's in a room and let them run like hell for 10 hours then calculated the ratio of the ones that worked and didn't after time was up. Just like what manufactures do with all hardware, even light bulbs.. lmao.. Give me a break jasper solves the problem geez.. Wait until they are in a few hundred thousand homes - then the truth will be revealed.
B) I was referring to having a second controller.. Because I actually have friends who come over to play and a girlfriend that likes too split screen. Sorry you people don't know that pleasure or understand that concept.. Too caught up in your online social life to have a real one I suppose. Explains not being able to comprehend English properly.. Otherwise, you would have figured that out for yourselves.
C) All those prices named are exactly what I spent and what I see in Atlantic Canada retailer outlets. Only thing that isn't accurate in my list is the console price -FOR-ME-, as I paid retail for 3 Pro models after each one turned out to be a nightmare from RROD. My brother in Ontario doesn't pay any less then me, maybe 2-5 dollars for the odd thing and he's in Ontario (Big city to the stupid).
Sure, you can catch a deal here and there, you're an idiot if you think that I didn't know that and really needed to inform me about the concept.. OH WOW A DEAL/SALE/BARGIN? WHAT IS THIS YOU SPEAK OF? /sarcasm.. Hey maybe you can tell me about those crazy new things I'm hearing about, y'know, light bulbs? I hear their great... /sarcasm - Please I think I can grasp the idea of sales and deals coming up and being able to get things cheaper without an idiot trying to educate me about their existence. Trouble is they don't have those deals everywhere or all the time. Come to Atlantic Canada and you'll learn that quick! (Don't even propose moving, or else you're truly a moron... Like spending $1000's to move for cheap gaming hardware or the occasional deal is really worth it..)
D) No, PS3 controller cables are not free (did I insinuate they were? No..), but they are not proprietary cables either unlike the 360's controllers cable (Suck it!) - nor do I have to buy a battery pack to obtain a second cable for my second controller or pay an outrageous fee for one individually (buying any Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft branded accessory is a ripoff!~FACT!~ Buy generic and you're golden..). For the PS3 any generic USB to the mini jack works, and I have billions of those cables since almost every digital camera and other USB device with a cable uses them (my grandma has 5 and she has nothing but DollarStore MP3 players!).. Did you think of those facts before some of you made your statements on that topic? Apparently not. You just got schooled..
And sure, you can't swop out batteries with the PS3 controller, that's true - not that's it's a HUGE inconvenience like you make it sound.. Connect the cable to you're controller and PS3 and problem solved - it charges in an hour or less while I'm playing, and when I'm done playing I just connect them up to my PC to charge to make sure they are ready to go next time.. That or pick up the second controller I have, if I'm playing alone. Same crap to me.. Personally I'd rather not pay $20 for rechargeable double A batteries - as they take freaking 8+ hours to charge. That's my opinion though. I get about 30 hours of play time out of each charge on my PS3 controllers, I'm not gonna complain, that's good enough for me.
E) Yeah, you can hack a router into a WiFi adapter, you can even make a cheap router into a bittorrent box too. But let's face it, how many 'casual' people are gonna want to or have the abilities to do so? That's right casual people - since Microsoft is so throttled to the idea that Grandma and Grandpa should have an Xbox 360 - You hardcore games got kicked to the curb - sucka's. Besides, when I buy a multimedia box like the 360 is trying to be, it should have that built it, period - that's my expectations (are they set to high for you Microsoft bitches?)
F) Yup, streaming Netflix is great - to bad everyone I know including myself does not bother with it (generally useless to the 50 people I know located in rural areas with Dialup - with NO option of highspeed - Ironically where DVD and Blu-ray media succeed - wait you didn't think of that did you? You ignorantly assumed everyone has highspeed available..You FAIL). But hey, different strokes for different folks - The streaming and downloading market will never take off until global broadband solution can be established - as millions would be left out in the rain (Think of all the lost potential revenue).
Also...For the record, I don't bother with Blu-ray either (could careless about it, but you seem to think I'm a blu-ray buff!). I got maybe one movie and it came with my PS3.. (LIKE OMG SPIDERMAN3 - AWESOME!)........ I just love being able to download any movie off bittorrent (I admit it - Sue me), load it up, no matter what format or codec it is - it works on my PS3, and it upscale's it beautifully, it works so damn well it gives me wet dreams..
But enough of the debating, this could go on forever. Fact is, most of your statements are moronic. I've countered them with accurate and truthful opinions and facts. Don't like it? Deal with it.
Comprehend English and learn to deal with opinions that don't side in your favor you fanboys.. lmfao Jeez..
Apparently the 'for me' part wasn't clear enough.
Oh who made the "I notice your break down doesn't have games" comment..? You're an idiot, why would I name off games when I'm commenting at people crying about HARDWARE COSTS!?.. Jack ass. Can't quiet say I've heard of someone buying a gaming platform and not buying games? Did you really feel that was the situation? You're more stupider then you look!
u r 4ll 5ooooooo |7um8 u n3wBS!!!!!!!1111111oneoneoneone.. - Quoted from an Xbox fanboy I know.. Sigh...
Cheers FanBoyz..
P.S - Hey Windows 7 is coming out soon, I bet you'll be right in line all night to get that since you seem to be such hardcore Microsoft peeps! Enjoy you're graphically peaked gaming platform ;)
@Ixon
Your arguments are utterly weak and filled with all types of bias and fallacy; no point in taking you seriously. You're telling us to learn how to comprehend? You can barely communicate without sounding like a schizophrenic jackass. Be honest now; how old are you and how often do you see the light of day?
@ JBDragon:
"For all the RROD problems the 360 has, People would rather go though 2,3,4,5,6 systems then get a PS3."
Did you even think before you typed this? I don't know what people you know, but I can't think of a single consumer that would go through 'x' amount of systems as opposed to one. Furthermore, with the amount people are spending, they shouldn't have to worry about a substantial amount of consoles failing. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I know they have since corrected many problems with the 360, but it did go through a pretty rough patch at one point.
"Sony should thank they're lucky stars because if the 360 was problem free, sales would have been far higher, and the PS3 would have been a failed system, another Dreamcast."
Another Dreamcast? Really? You know, I don't even know what to say to this statement..
@ Iphoney
No. You're wrong, clearly some people cannot comprehend English. Otherwise when I gave my breakdown and mentioned the console, then a controller - they would have been able to understand I was talking about a second controller and in addition to that it was my experience and break down of what I bought and my total amount spent. Clearly they didn't understand none of that by some of their comments. Varying from "the console comes with a controller you dip" too "Those prices are not what I paid!" and "I didn't have to buy all that!"... Their idiots if they understood "break down for me" then they'd know it was what I bought and what I paid for.
In addition, I'm not arguing anything, in fact, everything I stated is completely solid facts. From the prices of retail items to the proprietary nature of every Xbox branded piece of hardware to the fact download/streaming media is a no go (as in a DVD/Blu-ray replacement as suggested it would be) until broadband is available everywhere which it isn't (more then 30% of Canada and the US don't have a high-speed option).
Clearly my statements (or arguments as far as your concerned) could not have been that weak or else you and all the billions of Xbox fanboys would have pulled the trigger to flame me with some bogus spoon full of fanboy B.S like all the other times I stated my opion..
I'll be a 'schizophrenic jackass' while you be the 'trying to hard to be the bigger man because you know you don't have jack shit to say to combat my facts'... I can see it clear as day.. Hell I pull the same routine when I get my ass handed to me in a argument.. LMFAO
Suck it - Y'know you wanna - you clearly do all the time.. lol
As someone who has the PS3 360 and Wii I find the fanboys haters funny. I have to say the PS3 has good functions (at east the orginal 60gb one that still played PS2 and PS1 games and had the media slots) I realized just last week I put movies off of my MBP on an SD card and watch them on the big screen. But even with that I can't say that PS3 is that great. Each system has its pluses and minuses but i would say it makes sense to me that PS3 is thrid. Gmes are generally just a little better on 360 mostly because of DLC, Wii has its cool points but PS3 just depends on power and being a media hub which most people have in their computers. its all really just a matter of a person likes and wants. Stop the hating.
I thought you meant the PS3 is going to be cheaper by $300. A $99 PS3? I'd buy it even if it came in a 6-game bundle!
That photo is really confusing. The specular highlight merges with the clipped background so it looks like two consoles, profile and head on. I thought there was a new "flat sided" model until someone explained it to me.
At first glance, I thought the same thing. I thought they had released a PS3-slim!
Can't we all just get along?
This is a never ending argument. What is so wrong with all you fanboys brains that you can't accept that not every console is for every person? Oh, and you assholes who say "I'm not a fanboy, BUT...", yeah, BUT you ARE you dicks, or you wouldn't say it.
I'm sorry, but no PS3 exclusive (except LBP) is attractive to me and I'm not buying into Blu-ray quite yet (and if I do get BD, I'm opting for a new laptop w/ a BD drive). That doesn't mean the PS3 sucks or that its a horrible machine.
You know, I think we need to bring back the Bully. You know, that guy that used to beat you all up in high school? Because you nerds are too damn egotistical. Your short-sightedness doesn't go past your own thumbs and you're so self-absorbed that you can't see that everyone's experience is different. In my personal experience, no one I know owns a PS3. That's no exaggeration, I don't know a single friend w/ a PS3. I have one co-worker who also happens to have a 2nd job working at Gamestop, and so she has all 3 consoles. Outside of that... none of my friends... and we've even had discussions on whether we should get one... and those conversations always end w/ "Why would we want to?". That's just my small part of the world... should I twist my experience or misinterpret it into thinking the PS3 sucks or is an awful device? I would never think that. I would never think it because sales #'s will tell me anyway. (That last line was a small jab, I'm just kidding).
But back to topic, I will tell you the 2 honest factors that stop me from picking up a PS3: Price and games. And this is coming from a person who's owned 2 Xboxs and 2 Xbox 360s (early adopter on BOTH), a DS, and a PSP... so don't give me that "get off you ass and get a job cause you're too poor" line that Sony fanboys fall back on.
It's like the Quentin Tarantino schtick: You're either an Elvis-person or a Beatles-person. Even if you like both, you lean to one more. Neither sucks. Or you're totally Celine Dion and have a Wii (that was also a light-hearted joke... don't get bent lol).
xbox probobly sells more cause its hacked, so how much does M$ make from downloaded games.
at least Sony makes all their money back from software...
Im so sick of ppl saying the PS3 has no games. Whoever says that is a damn idiot. The PS3 has plenty of games. Are some of you ppl that much of a nerd were you stay in the house all day playing videogames. If that's the case then I guess the Wii and Xbox 360 game library don't satisfy you either. The PS3 is a good system. It may not be selling as well as the other systems but it is selling. At least Sony actually took the time to put out a system that is made of quality. I laugh at all these dumb Xbox fans who keep buying system after system when the old one dies.smh "Buh buh buh the games are great, that's why i keep letting Microsoft rape me." Pathetic. Gamers shouldn't have to hold their breath or pray everytime they turn their system on(RROD). But go ahead and keep saying PS3 sucks and think M$ is so great. The jokes on you dumb idiots who supports a company that knowingly put out shoddy equipment just to beat another company. What good is having all these "wonderful games" the xbox 360 has if u cant play them due to your system being in the shop for the 1st,2nd,3rd, or even 5th time.
Playing games couple hours a day is far from all day.
Yes PS3 has some good games as well as the other systems.
Just not good enough ones for me. (I played to the point of them not being fun enough to continue playing any more the following, Grand Theft Auto series, Dawn of War series, Call of Duty series, Final Fantasy 7 through 12, Goldeneye 007, Old Mega Mana Series, Old Ninja Gaiden Series, Rome Total War, World of Warcraft, Doom 1 and 2 Not 3. Warcraft series, Starcraft, Sim City, Ace Combat, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Civilization series, Total Annihilation Kingdom, Super Metriod, Double Dragon, River City Ransom < =), Guild Wars, Everquest, Grand Turismo series, Roller Coaster Tycoon series, Sims 2, Guitar Hero, Mario Brothers all versions pretty much...ect.)
I would own all the systems if each one had an exclusive game I had to own.
Rehashing more of the same old unless its real good is not good enough.
Take a look at how crappy Dawn of War Sisters of Battle turned out compared to the original. They just wore a great game right out.
And just because XBox 360 is going to get a crappy port of FF13 don't mean I will be buying it cause its a cheaper system.
I don't own a XBox 1 or 360 cause Halo didn't do much for me. I been through all the Unreal, Doom Half-Life ect games and that Gener is boring.
I have 2 of each systems in my house. Each has good qualities and bad. I love them all, and i am just a casual gamer. Gears2 , Halo, Rachet and Clank, GT,Fallout, mario cart etc...... great games , good fun, cheap and mutli-player. Never had a problem with a system failure. Enjoy what you have and keep it pushing
iSuppli's estimating how much it costs. Nobody knows the deals Sony has going with suppliers. Nobody.
It wouldn't surprise me if they were profiting on hardware.
That said, lose the gloss, lose some more power consumption and lose a lot of weight and no doubt freight costs would go down, too, all adding up to some nice margin.
A matte slimline PS3 would be very nice.
Anyone tracking variations in external (meaning in the customer's hands) failure rates for the PS3 since the changes in components? The headline says it all. $300 cheaper product. PS3 has always been more reliable than the RROD plagued 360. "you pay for what you get..."
Anyways they need to lower the price at least 200 and then they'll make a killing. The only game on the PS3 that has even got me willing to give the PS3 space on my entertainment center is little big planet. PS3 has been a serious faux pas for Sony. Blu-ray? hah... streaming media plz???? Physical media storage is bad for the environment.
I find the hater comments about Blu-Ray rather lacking in comprehension.
First of all, simply talking about the United States, broadband sucks for a majority of the country. There are parts of this country that can barely manage a decent 56K modem connection, so streaming HD movies is a good decade away, plus the quality of them is nowhere near a good BD. There are plenty of people who like the extra quality.
Secondly, the storage space on a DVD is barely even adequate for today's games, let alone games coming out in the next year or two. John Carmack stated rather matter of fact that upcoming games based on the id Tech 5 engine will be crippled on XBox compared to the PC or PS3 because of lack of storage (and MS licensing costs), and praised Sony for including blu-ray and the extra storage it affords. Blu-Ray is not simply about playing movies, it's about storage folks. I try to avoid a PC game that takes 4-5 CD's to install when they could simply have pressed one DVD. Likewise the XBox 360 is going to look incredibly silly soon when it takes 4-5 discs and sucks up all your HD space, when the PS3 is just one disc with higher quality textures, and leaves all the storage on the optical media.
