Lenovo's ThinkPad W700ds now really official: starts at $3,663
It's sort of tough to say that Lenovo's ThinkPad W700ds is not yet official, but if you've been scouring the web for a legitimate press release from the outfit, here's your sign. The dual screen beast is at long last being confirmed by Lenovo, offering up workstation performance along with a 17-inch primary display and a 10-inch secondary slide-out panel. Details about exact configurations are scant, but we are told that prospective buyers will be able to equip theirs with high-end Intel CPUs, optional RAID HDD / SSD setups, NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, dual-link DVI / Display Port / VGA support, a 7-in-1 card reader, five USB ports, WiFi, optional WiMAX, a smartcard reader and a dual thermal solution to keep it from melting your legs and / or desk. Reportedly, the machine will be available today starting at $3,663, but as of now, it's still nowhere to be found on the firm's US website.

Lets see what can I buy with 3600k, one 40 inch flat panel LCD TV. A kick ass desktop and laptop with money left over for drinks and snacks.
Dave @ Jan 5th 2009 4:03AM
That better be a 40" OLED TV or at least some kickass snacks if you had 3600k and were only able to get those few things. That or you can't budget worth a damn.
Protip: 3600k != 3.6k

Awesome. I'll be able to type on in a maximized word document while viewing my pr0nz. Genius.

I think if the second display was a tad bigger I think more people would consider it but at the moment it seems kind of pointless.
Brent1700 @ Jan 5th 2009 1:53AM
you're pointless
Stephen @ Jan 7th 2009 1:50PM
The reason it's 10" is that if you set it vertically it's the same height as the 17" monitor next to it. If it was larger then the second screen wouldn't join up to give you a rectangular space and you couldn't slide it behind the main monitor. The picture at top doesn't show you that clearly but viewed straight on it's quite obvious and well thought out.
Bigger monitors are lovely but the sizes have actually had some thought put into it.
Tohe @ Jan 5th 2009 12:32AM
this machine is a mean bitch!
raj @ Jan 5th 2009 12:41AM
the TRUE anti-macbook air :)
this thing is a true beast. 5 USB ports? wow and the dual screens reminds me of the DS haha
I dont see the applications of this, it's not too portable and at that price, you may as well get 3 nice laptops or a really nice desktop :) plus 2 screens
Shyam D @ Jan 5th 2009 12:39AM
I can't honestly understand the demand for this. If you really needed this kind of workstation, wouldn't you prefer a desktop with 2x the performance and screen space for the same cost? I'm not trying to bash it, it just boggles my mind as to why.
Jon @ Jan 5th 2009 12:46AM
I'll take six!

Also now featuring a staggering 5 minutes of battery life!!
only kidding.
Seriously, this is a great idea, and if they were to throw in a blu ray burner into the mix, this will make a great portable workstation. I can imagine coding on this thing, Have my debugger running in the 10" screen and the program on the main screen. Right now I am working off a EEE PC 1000H. Nice little machine, but I miss my optical drive, and despite the widescreen, the resolution is a bit cramped. However, I have never really had a screen larger than 1024x768. Maybe after college...

Notice that the mouse pad is not centered on the laptop.
Bobby @ Mar 14th 2009 7:26AM
Why do people not understand this?
It's not centred in the middle of the laptop, but it's centred for the keyboard. On a keyboard with a numpad, your hands are always towards the left of the keyboard where the actual QWERTY keyboard is. If the touch pad was centred for the laptop, you'd be moving your hands to the right every time you wanted to move the cursor.
awong @ Jan 5th 2009 3:33AM
I can probably use the side screen to check my blind spot. Will it beep when I do a reverse?
Phantom_Lord @ Jan 5th 2009 6:18AM
In fact, it doesn't look pretty at all... :|

Speaking from someone who actually owns the w700 but, without the second display. There's really no need imo for this extra screen. Hell the screen is large enough as it is. Hey uummm Lenovo....there is that nifty DVI port in the back which allows me to extend my desktop soooooo...yeah.
Down @ Jan 5th 2009 12:33PM
Whats it like being inside someone?
Orbot @ Mar 14th 2009 1:10PM
Shouldn't there be a flipout screen on the otherside too?
Pete @ Mar 14th 2009 10:31PM
Damn this laptop good. Can anyone of you tell me if you had the money to blow, you wouldn't buy this laptop. It has two screens for christ sake, what would you do with two screens you ask, I don't frickin know but it would be awesome!
