Special Edition Samsung NC10 gets 6-cell battery, larger touchpad
Tired of waiting for that NC20, are you? Fret not, as Samsung has apparently hammered out a deal with Amazon to exclusively sell a special edition of the NC10. As we saw with MSI's upgrading of the Wind U100, the nicely refreshed NC10 checks in with most of the same specs -- a 10.2 WSVGA display, 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 160GB HDD, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR -- but it does add a few delectable extras for just $50 over the "other" NC10. Most notable is the 5,900mAh 6-cell high capacity battery, which extends the already respectable battery life to a staggering 9.4 hours. Furthermore, the enlarged touchpad should make mousing around a bit easier, and there's also an anti-reflection gloss coating display that may or may not float your boat. Obviously, there's no word on a ship date just yet, but we'd put our money on "sooner," not "later."

I wonder how much "larger" they made the trackpad. Couple of mm in each direction?
Rumour has it the black stig is coming back.
On topic I'm guessing it's horizontal with an extra MM on either side.
@firephoenix
Your profile pic is awesome! Stig ftw!
Anyways, the $500 price tag doesn't justify the specs.
A dual-core atom and possibly 2gb RAM would be sickk.
@myself
ahh, crap.
I meant to say the specs don't justify the $500 price tag!!
@ Shattered Ice
Off topic: Really? I'm stumped about what colour they were gonna be able to use. I guess black is the only real option they have.
On topic: Haha. Well worth it's portion of the extra $50.
They can't make it too much bigger, since the dimensions of the laptop are staying the same
@ schmitt
Haha. Cheers man.

This is supposed to be a teaser and is supposed to be official.

You have to watch this to know what I'm talking about. The original black stig was thought to havedied during this stunt so they brought in white stig.
@ Shattered Ice (again)
You sir, have just made every avid Top Gear fan's day (well, those that haven't seen that video). Especially mine.
God bless you.
I hope this is official and not just a mock up. It's hard to tell cause this is exactly the way I'd imagine the crazy Top Gear team would re-introduce Black Stig. Excellent.
It has also just started snowing heavily. I like snow.
This has been a good day. :-D
Only had a tiny bit of snow today expecting lots tomorrow. I really don't know whether to trust the site or not but top gears not back for another month or so . So I guess we'll have to wait. Oh I reported the first comment so they've removed it and that's why you're comment is down the page.
I was actually looking to purchase the NC10 recently, but I will definitely wait for this. A larger trackpad is ALWAYS welcome, especially on a netbook.
Aye. First knobhead.
Erm, don't ask me what's happened here but it looks like the comment that this was a reply to originally has been blasted into the upper ionosphere.
O_o
Doesn't the regular NC10 have a 6 cell battery?
The regular NC10 has a 6-cell 5200 mAh battery. This one's 5900 mAh battery
9.4 hours?! thats ALMOST where all computer batteries should be! :D
9.4 hours... thats... > 8 hours... a-maz-....a00...wha....vvvv
Dude, what's wrong with your keyboard?
It's an Eee.
I can't believe this, I JUST ordered an NC10 in Black. With 2gb of RAM (upgrade) and Windows 7 I'm averaging about 4-5 hour battery life, with minimum use. Would it really be worth the extra $50 and the trouble of sending it back for the bigger battery and touchpad? Advice?
Nah. I don't think so, personally.
yes
no...
i'm going to guess the 6-cell will stick out of the bottom, which i don't like personally. so IMO, no.
Doesn't the normal six cell battery stick out of the bottom anyway?
And about the NC10 battery lasting 5 hours - That seems to be what people were averaging. Have you turned your brightness down to 50 percent? (Is the screen readable at that point?) Bluetooth off?
So far, I've seen nothing from the other netbook manufacturers that can beat or even match the specs of the N280 based $399 Asus 1000HE. Asus must have first dibs on Intel's N280 production.
I don't think the N280 is anything special. I haven't seen a benchmark yet that can tell the difference. Obviously the main increase you might expect to affect the results would be the FSB increase, but it doesn't seem to matter. Also I don't think it uses less power either... so other than Intel switching from the old to the new I'm not sure why you'd care...
another 1024x600 netbook, only overpriced. who is going to stop the 1024x600, 1366x768 nonsense and deliver 1280x720? maybe a via nano one?
I agree the resolution sort of sucks, but do you realize that 1366x768 is higher than 1280x720?
That resolution is some non-standard bogus resolution that would bother a lot of people. Or at least me.
I just want to know if I can put one of those pci-e ssd's in one of these? or replace the hdd with an ssd
1. im also interested in express-card ssds
2. the nc 10 doesnt have an express-card-slot
3. why shouldnt you be able to upgrade the stock hdd to a ssd?
greets
looking at the 1000he it looks like a better deal, i would probably just upgrade that
Take THAT Macbook Pro!
/sarcasm
people still do this?
Its not like netbooks are hurting anyone are they? To some, they are a godsend, a great complimentary computer. To others, totally unnecessary and a waste of money but your not being forced to buy one.
All I'm tired off is so many netbooks having the same specs and not having more variety but I suppose there are many ceilings to netbooks that prevent this.
^ FINALLY someone who gets it :)
instead of complaining =]
there was a comment saying FIRST but engadget deleted it so now i look stupid. :/
What would the real battery life be without the WiFi, Bluetooth off and screen at minimum brightness? Maybe 5 hours?
Why did you write all that to slycooper.
i guess he thought i was asking what's the point of netbooks but i was replying to that guy that said first and got his comment deleted.
Well, that's embarrasing. : 0
Third post with an Amazon screen grab today. Is it Amazon paying day?
GRIM FANDANGO PIC!!!!1
pity its not a 1.66Ghz N280 HD ftw!
so you have to wait for the (cheaper) asus 1000he...
I love how ASUS explicitly says it plays 720p HD, as if none of the other netbooks can do it when in reality, all of them can do it.
http://blog.laptopmag.com/eee-pc-1000he-uses-intel-945gse-chipset-still-plays-720p-video
well, NC10 with 6-cell battery is available in UK since November 2008. FUT: http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Samsung_Netbook_NC10_Ultra_Portable_Laptop_in_Black_NP-NC10-KA02UK/version.asp?PID=1201
I paid $305 for an Acer Aspire One with 6 cell battery, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive, and fantastic build quality. Is that one inch of screen really worth an extra $200? Hell no!
The NC10 is my favorite netbook, but the price is far too high. I'd recommend the Acer Aspire One, (model: AOA150-1447.)
