Special Edition Samsung NC10 gets 6-cell battery, larger touchpad
Tired of waiting for that NC20, are you? Fret not, as Samsung has apparently hammered out a deal with Amazon to exclusively sell a special edition of the NC10. As we saw with MSI's upgrading of the Wind U100, the nicely refreshed NC10 checks in with most of the same specs -- a 10.2 WSVGA display, 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 160GB HDD, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR -- but it does add a few delectable extras for just $50 over the "other" NC10. Most notable is the 5,900mAh 6-cell high capacity battery, which extends the already respectable battery life to a staggering 9.4 hours. Furthermore, the enlarged touchpad should make mousing around a bit easier, and there's also an anti-reflection gloss coating display that may or may not float your boat. Obviously, there's no word on a ship date just yet, but we'd put our money on "sooner," not "later."

That one inch of screen real estate (actually 1.3") really DOES make the difference (15% larger if my math is correct). I have used both and the difference is night and day. It seems Acer realized this also and that's why they are ditching the 9" screens for 10" on their new models. ASUS also realized this late last year...
I like it.
But I'm one of those guys who really need netbooks, so much so that I I accepted Sony extortion and bought a Vaio TT , which is small but surely can't be called a netbook.
When I decided to buy a netbook the first thing I looked for was the ease of hacking possibilities and the second the best possible screen.
After careful study I ended up buying a ( smarted up and rebranded) MSI wind.
With minimal effort I found a 6 cell battery, replaced the single cored Atom with a dual core, doubled the ddr2 to 2 GB, found an external dvd burner that does'nt require external power, a DTV receiver, installed a bigger and faster HD and made sure that there's the possibility to change it with a SSD should it get too hot (no probs), and since BT, wifi and a surprisingly good webcam were already in place I ended up with a netbook nearly as good as my Vaio TT for a small fraction of the price.
Now, this Sammy looks as slik as the water around the Exxon Valdez but somehow I doubt that you can fix it up to your content as much as I could do with MSI's excellent product, but of course I might be wrong (once again).
Where did you get your hands on a dual-core atom? And do you know if the samsung nc10's cpu is soldered or if it's easy to replace the single-core? I was thinking about giving myself a small project to do EXACTLY like yours, just replacing the intel atom with a atom dual core in a netbook
Ugh I hate glossy screens. I have a proper (matte screen) NC10 and am very pissed off about the glossy NC20.
Yet another netbook. Yawn. SHOW ME THE TABLETS! (Convertible, please! Daddy need's his keyboard)
I want, but not $500 want.
