Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 finally up for order, starts at $399
It's been a rocky road, paved with hardship and confusion, but Dell's finally ready to let us at its colorful collection of Inspiron Mini 10 netbooks -- at least the order page. You can (slightly) configure them to your hearts content, but any color outside of black comes with a $30 price premium. We upped a Mini 10 to "Jade Green" and threw in a 1.6GHz Z530 Atom processor (1.33GHz is standard) and ended up at $479, but there's no expanding beyond the 1GB of RAM or the 160GB HDD, as per the international netbook treaty. The order page is quoting a "preliminary ship date" of April 2nd, up from the March 31st we saw two days ago, so we hope that's just a rough estimate.

Would this thing be able to stream HQ Netflix, Hulu, or play ripped DVD's with hiccups?
...withOUT hiccups is what I mean.
You will get the occasional hiccup on the current Intel GMA 900 chipset. This says GMA 500 (which I believe is a mistake on Dell's part) but there is an "HD" screen upgrade and a chipset upgrade coming to this netbook in the upcoming months. If you are interested in HD playback I would suggest waiting for the unreleased features rather than springing for this one.
I'm gonna wait until someone or them tell me i can upgrade that ram. also for the tv tuner and 6 cell battery, then its golden
Wasn't this supposed to have a higher resolution screen than your average netbook ?
that's a "coming soon" feature.
It's too bad the Mini 10 isn't shipping with an SSD option yet -- one of the keen things about the Mini 9 is having a laptop with no motors for drives for fans (and thus completely silent).
"The order page is quoting a "preliminary ship date" of April 2nd, up from the March 31st we saw two days ago,..."
Perhaps the ship date went up by two days because you were viewing it two days later.
"The order page is quoting a "preliminary ship date" of April 2nd, up from the March 31st we saw two days ago, so we hope that's just a rough estimate"
Yes... because you're looking at it 2 days later?
will the mini 10 be hackintoshable? Im considering it or the mini 9 but would wait for the 720p screen if it can be hackintoshed.
From what I've read, the GMA 500 graphics is the real obstacle for hackintosh here (and in Mini 12 as well).
Good lord Dell.
RAM isn't upgradeable, no multitouch, GPS, 3G, 6 cell battery option, TV tuner or high resolution screen at launch AND you're charging extra for alternate colours? You really should have just waited. This is a joke.
Way to mess up a launch Dell...... This was a highly desirable netbook when it was shown at CES, but somehow, they managed to cripple it, overcharge for it and come late to the party. Very dissapointing, such a wasted opportunity.............
Great, not I want the Ubuntu version with 2Gb for the same price!
Hmm, not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The 160GB 5400RPM HDD and the multi-touch touchpad make it a better deal than the HP Mini note 1000. The only thing I would really change would be the 3-cell battery. Does anyone know how the battery life and power of these Z5XX series CPUs compares to a typical N270?
Probably slightly better, but not ground-breaking.
N270 = 25mmx25mm PCB Size, 1.6ghz, 2.5w
Z530 = 13mmx13mm PCB Size, 1.6ghz, 2w
It's almost practically 1/4 of the physical imprint of the N270. Also, its > 50% more in price (tray). Smaller Atoms = Smaller Devices :)
Guys! This netbook can only hold 1gig of ram max because of the chipset. Not sure if the 'international netbook treaty' has anything to do with that. It sucks anyways not to be able to have more than just a gig in this nice machine.
Wrong, it only comes with 1GB because of microsoft, but it gladly supports 2GB and it's an easy upgrade.
This is such a bad buy. The only reason I can see myself buying this one is for Dell's excellent service. Other than that I would spend my money elsewhere.
I got my Dell Mini 9 through Vodafone on the cheap - really nice netbook, works great on the go and the battery life is pretty amazing too. Looking forward to trying out the 10.
Um? What ever happened to the inbuilt GPS, WWAN, TV Tuner, Multitouch Pad, 802.11n?
Just another netbook here, folks.
For the parents of little kids out there looking for a netbook that intend to let the kids use it, you might want to wait for the 720P versions. The flash-based Webkinz screen is around 700 pixels tall. If you don't know what I'm talking about... then nevermind.
Why get this when you can get the Acer Aspire One now with a 10.1-Inch,6 cell battery,160 GB ?
The thing is, for those of us with large hands the keyboard is a major problem with a lot of netbook models. And while HP and Dell seem to have figured that out, their specs and prices are way out of line with everyone else.
And the Acer is $349 with free shipping from Amazon.
Why would I buy the Dell when I could purchase the Eee PC 1000HE for around $380 (shipped) which includes Bluetooth, a more powerful processor(1.66 GHz), wireless N, and a 6 cell battery that is rated for over 9 hrs.?
becuase this is a perfect hackintosh
because the EEC is ugly as sin
The Mini 12 is starting to look a lot more appealing. Ubuntu, bigger screen, same price, 6cell, bluetooth, bigger keyboard.
Ummmm....
"Coming Soon
The following Inspiron Mini 10 features will be available at a later date:
More Storage – Do even more with optional 2GB memory and optional 250GB4 hard drive."
That kind of implies it IS expandable. It's unlikely they'd go to the trouble of making two entirely different motherboards, one with a chipset limited to 1GB.
Jeff,
It isn't an etirely new motherboard, but rather a daughter-card with CPU+RAM on it. To upgrade RAM, this card has to be replaced with a new one, so most likely it won't be a DIY option.
For the bargain hunters -- the Dell Mini 9's and 12's are showing up in the Dell Outlet with 9's starting around $260.
They currently only have 12's with Vista, unfortunately.
The first link ('confusion') is invalid.
GAH! my parents called me and said “hey look on qvc, there’s a computer we want” and i said “yeah it looks good, but it’s not out yet” and they responded “yeah well we already bought it”. i don’t think i’ll tell them the actual price. stupid qvc.
Can it run OS X Leopard?
