Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

Dell's Mini 10 netbook certainly seems to occupy the sweet spot between the company's Mini 9 and Mini 12 offerings but, according to Laptop's review of the netbook, there may be just a few too many trade-offs for some folks. On the upside, the Mini 10 does compare favorably to most other 10-inch netbooks in terms of size and weight, and the keyboard is actually a tad larger than the one on the Mini 12, with it measuring about 0.3-inches deeper and extending right to the edge of the system. Unfortunately, Laptop found that the reworked touchpad was quite a bit more finicky than the one's on its counterparts, and Dell's decision to hold back on some features like a six-cell battery means that it doesn't quite give you the same bang for the buck as something like the Samsung NC10 or ASUS Eee PC 1000HE. Still undecided? Then hit up the read link below for the full rundown.

Am I the only one who thinks that the keyboard looks almost EXACTLY like the one on the HP Mini 1000?
That wouldn't be a bad thing.
the keyboard on the HP Mini should be the industry standard for Netbooks
IT'S A RIPOFF NO DOUBT!!!!1
If I pick this guy up, it'll be when they release the version that can do 720p video

I dislike your shameless self-promotion.

don't you mean http://beatoffmichael.com ?
the hardware is incompatible with hackint0sh.
epic fail.
Welp this one is out!
Definitely an epic fail to the .001% of the market that actually would give a shit about that. Dell is going to lose at least 4, MAYBE EVEN 5 CUSTOMERS to this lack of foresight! Nooooooo!
You can count me in as one of those 4 or 5 customers then :)
I was hoping to make this computer a hackintosh as well. I guess ill go look for a HP Mini 1000 instead =/
How do you tell if it is compatible or not?
Look to see if an Apple sticker in the middle of the lid would cover the vendor's logo or not. If it will, then it is compatible. If not, then it isn't.
The Dell Mini 9 is, but the Eee PCs are not since they Eee logo is in the corner. See, its quite simple.
Computer companies should focus on creating lighter and more portable 15.4" notebooks. That thing is just too freakin small.
Could they not at least paste in some pretty screenshot? Were the 14 tray icons plus the search really that necessary? Kinda takes up half the taskbar...
I love that you counted the icons, just so you could moan about them!
Screw the battery and touchpad, this thing is pretty in the way that more notebooks should be.
Will we ever see a netbook with a trackpoint? I'm beginning to lose hope here...
well there is the Vaio P
At $1k+, it's hardly a netbook. For this kind of cash, I'd rather get a used X61.
Trackpoint is what I'm Waiting for, I Had a Lenovo Ideapad for a couple weeks .. Hated the Touchpad!!
Yeah, I was just pointing that out. I feel like the industry is shifting away from sole trackpoints in general. Although, the absolutely tiny touchpad on the Everex Cloudbook was almost trackpoint-like.
Is it just me or is the read-link (laptopmag) sloooow / not responding?
Can't see the review either: server is too busy... :(
I hope all that stuff doesn't run at startup, or that netbook is going to take forever to boot.
The read link came up with a "The server is too busy" message :o
Guess it's still going to be popular...
Personally, I really like the way it looks and I'm feeling the urge to move on from my Eee PC 701...
Although my favourite thing about the 701 which has stopped me from upgrading so far is that with the fan unplugged it's completely and utterly silent... Perfect when doing work.
Theres 1GB worth of system tray icons right there.
I wondered what the Dell Mini 10 was like. But, after that, I am sticking with my trusty Hp Mini 1000.
Looks nice, but I am still a fan of the 9" models as I don't seem to have a huge issue with the smaller keyboard and really like the increased portability. I have a 701 8G that I am finally upgrading and was hoping one of these newer and smaller cased 10" would do, but I got tired of waiting and picked up a 901 20G for only $250 new after rebate. That has a 6 cell battery, 802.11N and BT and the same resolution screen as all the shipping 10" units, and it is WAY less expensive. I am also going to swap out the SSD with one of the new fast(90/55) 64GB units and this machine should be pretty sweet, and all for about $400
I got an HP Mini 1000 this weekend and love it! I wanted to look at a Dell Mini 9 but with a 2+ week wait until I'd arrive it from Dell.com when I live 5 minutes from where Dell makes these in Round Rock, TX, I went to Best Buy and saw this thing and fell in love with it. It's a beautifully crafted little machine and feels very solidly constructed. Gets warm quick and the fan pretty much runs nonstop, and the integrated audio sounds like crap, even with quality headphones. I found a driver that may fix this problem, but I'll have to wait till I get home to try it. Anyways, if this thing is close to the HP Mini, which it definitely looks like it, it'll be great.
The best thing about the HP's is they're very thin. Under 1". This Dell is 1.3", e.g. thick for a netbook. I think in a year all these thick netbooks will be dead when the price premium for thin goes away.
The worst thing about the HP is that the thin profile means a 1.8" drive, meaning S-L-O-W. I presume there are options for replacing the drive with an SSD, and that might make the thing quite snappy. I'm waiting for the HD version of the HP, what 2140? which I assume will ship around the same time as Dell's does. Wondering if the 1366x768 screen at 10" will be too squinty though.
If they can get one of these to the point where the multi-touch scrolling is really responsive (e.g. like an iPhone, or a Pre), then maybe the existing x600 (or god, even x576) rez might be more livable.
Meh... Compared to the EeePC 1000HE, there are at least three shortcomings:
1) It's way more expensive for comparable specs, at least $100 more
2) The screen is lower resolution. (1024x600 on the EeePC versus 1024x756 on the Dell)
3) The battery life is much shorter.
I'm returning the ASUS 1000 HE that was just delivered three days ago. Ignoring that the monitor was not very bright, the trackpad had seizure-like responses when I touched it (random magnifying, reducing font to 4 pt, scrolling in a bizarre/jerky motion), it was as heavy as my ThinkPad T42, was thicker than a big mac, and heavy as crap to carry around, it was a near-perfect netbook.
Too many people are focused on battery life at the expense of usability.
You might like it, but I hate the 1000 HE.
Were you not able to disable gestures in the mouse control panel? Or simply use the default driver instead?
I find the rest of your claims a bit unbelievable, though. The EeePC 1000HE weighs 1.45kg with battery (compared to 0.99kg for the 9" EeePC models, and the same as all the other 1000Hx models). The Thinkpad T42 weighs 2.6kg. That's a pretty big difference! Enormous, even. The Thinkpad is nearly double the weight.
At its thickest point, it's 3.8cm thick, which is slightly thicker than the T42. The difference is that the T42 is about 3.6cm thick everywhere (or at least half of it, it seems to taper a bit) while the EeePC ranges from 2.9cm tall to 3.6cm thick (it's primarily 3.8cm where the battery extends, and thinner elsewhere). I guess you could consider that too thick, although if you found the T42 to be thin, the EeePC being about the same shouldn't be too thick.
For comparison, my current 17" desktop replacement weighs 3.5kg and is 4.1cm thick.
I can certainly empathize with your complaints over the trackpad, as I used to have a Compal laptop with a pretty iffy trackpad that drove me nuts. But you seem to be off-base with the weight complaint.
I also don't think I'll upgrade from my Eee 701 yet.... heck, it can handle more RAM even.
I'm so torn between the Asus 1000HE and the Dell mini 10...
--The 1000HE has a nice keyboard, great battery life, and good price; however, it's not as slim as the mini 10, kinda chunky on the underside (The top lid is fine though), the eeepc brand/logo kills it.
--The mini 10 is nice and slim, I like the trackpad, keyboard is pretty good I suppose, the 720p optional screen sounds nice, but will jack up the price; but... Dell went and killed it with the non-user upgradeable ram and the high price for the specs compared to other netbooks... oh, and the battery life isn't great.
My [suggestions] to both companies:
--Asus, redesign the eeepc logo (use a different font and position it better I suppose), or just get rid of the eeepc brand and just use the Asus brand name.
--Dell, make the ram user upgradeable, use Li-Pol batteries instead of Li-Ion (like the 1000he), offer a better price (But I suppose it has to do with manufacturing costs...idk really.)
OKKKK, enough of my rant. It feels nice to let it out... I might just go with the 1000HE and put a neat sticker over it.... or hold out for something better.
I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Let's just say you get what you pay for...this is a basic computer to do basic tasks, don't expect too much. I've had multiple hardware failures and the touchpad I'd way too finicky. I think this was my last bad Dell experience.
