A new rumor from
SmartHouse is making the rounds today, with alleged sources claiming LG has partnered with Apple to make
OLED displays for a
new iPhone and iPod touch, a Taiwan-manufactured netbook that's reportedly already in working prototype stage, and a device with a wafer-thin screen that would link wirelessly to a content-providing box similar to Apple TV. Sure, some of that makes sense, but let's add a good bit of context here. This article in question was written by
SmartHouse veteran David Richards, who in the past has brought us such winners as PlayStation 4 launching in 2008, a Xbox 360 equipped with HD DVD, and our favorite, Apple producing its own soap opera series exclusively for the iPod. We're not saying the Apple-LG partnership is entirely out of the realm of possibility, but this guy doesn't exactly have the best track record. Furthermore, this doesn't jibe with two separate reports from
Dow Jones Newswire and
Commercial Times / DigiTimes that Quanta is providing the screens for an upcoming Apple netbook launching in Q3. Lastly, with today's announcement that LG is licensing
Kodak's OLED technology for future devices, we get the feeling the company isn't the best suited to meet Cupertino's demands. Seems like this week's barrage of Apple news has gotten to people's heads, honestly -- keep a sharp eye!

FIRST APPLE TARDS
yummmmm, those are delicioius.
I think this is just a distraction created by Apple for what's actually in the pipeline.
WTF engadget!!!! This should be tagged BREAKING NEWS!!!!
It's got fruit in the title - where's the breaking news tag???!!!
I thought I typed engadget.com and not tuaw.com, guess I was wrong...
oled here, oled there. oled oled oleds everywhere
They already ordered a million of 10.3 inch capacitive screens a while back... (rolleyes)
Remember that engadget?
@ noneedlessnoise:
First to post, last in life.
@ Phenom:
My Blackberry doesn't get breaking news titles :(
I hate apple and all their gorgeous this and beautiful that, but when that thing comes out if it's under $700 I'll buy it immediately just cause I really want a netbook that can do final cut pro, and yes I know bout the hackintoshes, I did that and I had problem after problem
Stephen, come back to reality, you will not do any FCP on a underpowered netbook with a minuscule screen.
Anyway, there is better option than FCP around, look at Avid or Vegas.
If you are ready to ditch 700$, get a 999$ macbook, it will handle FCP way better than a netbook. Only drawback is Apple have removed the firewire port... should be fine with AVCHD camera though.
Bull.
Now this is what I call news.......
I want that theoretical netbook more each time I see it.
it looks pretty bad to me. be it apple or not.
sans keyboard please!!
Yeah, bull...
Oh and - MOAR APPLE STUFF PLEEEZ!!!1
Out of all of the stuff goping on in the tech world, THIS is what some genius found compelling?
A rumor story?
"Seems like this week's barrage of Apple news has gotten to people's heads, honestly"
Yeah, the irony isnt lost on us either...
theyre not making a netboookkkkk!

http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/37614
These 2 links prove it!
Apple's idea of a net book is going to cost $899...
And be less powerful than the Mac Mini; way less.
Ohh shit, more than that, more like add an extra 0 on to that.
With OLED screen, $1500 at least.
Don't forget the SSD...
But will it blend?
Go fall in a ditch
or a blender
No power button.
Do you have to talk to this one to turn it on too?
Yes, you have to put on a seductive voice to really "turn it on" ;)
somehow incorporate the power button into the clickable track pad.
BAM!
So will it be made in Korea or Taiwan?
LEAVE ASIA ALONE
Fair enough. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
@michas_pi
You're officially the Chris Crocker of Engadget
Playstation 4 in 2008???
what the hell?
I can't wait til this comes to VERIZON!!!
After all this time, TSWB, I still can't figure out if you're a troll or just an idiot.
A million dollars says that it costs a million dollars.
I'll bet you a million a million people will buy it...
x 1,000,000
Bah, we all know Apple is working on a tablet-type machine that works as an iPod, netbook and e-reader all in one.
I also believe this will be the case. Jump on the e-reader bandwagon but with big advertising. Apple sell e-books via itunes - apple goons buy in droves. Amazon make kindle service available on it - immediately propel apple to the top of this sector - goons swear innovation and leadership.
Yawn!
Please stop posting that picture! I keep thinking it's real, and getting all excited (in my pants).
That's kinda sad...
If sony was smart and serious about OLED tech, I think they should beg apple to let them make OLED's for them. Even if they have to take a loss, it will totally help in the long run. They will make a profit eventually, it will advance their OLED tech, and it will help their ability to make OLED displays faster and cheaper.
OLED DISPLAY! People really won't be able to afford this when or if it comes out. Referencing Apple's over price computers.
Whether this article has any truth in it or not, we'll see an OLED iPhone in the next year or two anyway. That's pretty much guaranteed.
I would wager that the majority of cellphones will be OLED over the next few years. They're throw away items, for the most part, so the screen life isn't a big deal, and OLED production seems to be working well enough for small screens.
Sounds like a winner in the Apple Product Cycle:
http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/
is a netbook really a netbook if it's made by Apple and cost $1500?
Netbooks are a bag of hurt anyway.
OLED iPhone..... this is BIG.
OLED's are:
- Huge power savers.
- Visible at any angle (important because many iphone games use accelerometers)
- 50% sharper and brighter.
Regarding sunlight relfection, I'm 100% positive Apple figured out a solution for that.
I hope we see an Android OLED phone someday this year... maybe with Tegra?
"Regarding sunlight relfection, I'm 100% positive Apple figured out a solution for that."
Of course they did. They gave the solution with the UMBP; turn your brightness up.
That touchpad is preposterously small. It's barely taller than the spacebar!
That's what she said.
Makes sense. In true Apple style, the screen will become crap in about a year and you'll have to chuck the netbook.
LG already makes displays for apple. So I wouldn't be surprised.
Dude I think Engadget makes up these wothless ass POS articles just so they have a reason to post a title like "OLED iPhone and Netbook" knowing that they will get mad hits off of it!
Im so sick of this non-news!
Yep.
Why post this?
Most of the article is about how much of a BULLSHIT ARTIST the source is.
If you know that, why post it on your website?
@ "Look around you"
Man I could not agree more!
As if tomorrow wasn't enough, he had to go back and get on top of the giant pebble. As if it wasn't made already by the others, who stay in the cave. With the weapons needed, it is all done. Never then the same at all, but it is still alright, you know?
Ooo that is some good 'shroom talk right thar.
No one is saying LG = Lame Garbage now?! Where are the knuckleheads who often diss LG for their supposed low quality? Oh, is it because the news is tied to Apple, so these 'tards remain quiet?
ohh great, there goes more money to apple TT
An Apple designed tablet will rock the publishing world. OLED will allow it to be super thin and in color. Most of the posters above probably don't believe this, but there are still people in this world who enjoy reading books, newspapers, and magazines. In case you haven't noticed, these media are in a tough place right now because production and mailing costs for paper editions are killing them. Now imagine all of those publications available through ITMS and downloaded to an eBook/tablet device that didn't suck.
Win-win, and another $Bil or so on Apple's bottom line every year for being the middle man, and another $5Bil from device sales as this concept takes off. All you whiners who "can't afford" a pot to piss in? Buy some AAPL shares now. By next year at this time you money will be doubled twice and you can buy anything your want.
A tablet? you talk about ebooks readers. Oled is not easy on the eyes as E-ink.
Did you see the new color fujitsu?
I admit I would be happy if Apple were doing an ebook reader because more people would adopt the technology. On the long term, the less trees we cut, the more chance our kids will have a bright future.
Ok ... guys, please link me to another gadget blog. With a bit more gadget coverage. I'm done with all the apple news.
Yeah no kidding.
There's a good reason why Engadget's readership is declining:
http://www.alexa.com/
The more Apple-centric they become, the less people revisit Engadget.
They went from nearly 400,000 daily views a year ago to barely more than 60,000 today.
Their readership has declined by over 600% in other words, ~ 1/7 what it was last year.
It's all of this non-stop Apple BS they keep posting.
They weren't always this annoying.
If you want to visit some other top-notch tech blogs/sites that don't bend over backwards (or just bend over) for Apple, then may I suggest:
slashdot.org
wired.com
cnet.com
and if you want a more Microsoft-oriented site, then try http://www.neowin.net/news/category/main
I know that I frequent those sites more so than Engadget these days, because quite frankly, even non-news making bare mention of Apple (such as this rumor) is news-worthy enough for the Engadget fanboy bloggers who publish here.
Do you honestly believe that they cover even 1/10 as much Blackberry rumors, how about WinMo, how about Microsoft, or RIM, or Sony, or anyone else for that matter.
Of course not.
Good choice ... can't wait to see OLED notebooks/netbooks PCs... Iam also looking forward to see first notebook with laser pico projector build in...
regarding OLED first PC with oled screen seems to be this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fl-r/3340328249/sizes/l/ (OQO2+ picture taken on Cebit2009 with EVDO HSDPA options impelmented in Vista ... Windows 7 would be nicer due to touch OLED screen) should be available for delivery in april/may. I saw it and the Colors & contrast difference is visible immediatelly ...
Apple netbook? Who honestly gives a shit? I mean the entire netbook world knows you can install a fully functioning version of OSX86 on the MSI Wind; which for PC hardware has an awful lot of Macbook White in its looks. So in short, buy one, install the patched OSX, then if and when Apple drops a legit netbook, hock the Wind on EBay and get the Apple branded one should you choose.
This nonsense isn't even news anymore.
This is classic David Richards and Smarthouse dross to generate hits and ad revenue from fictious (and often ripped off stories http://www.regrettheerror.com/tag/smarthousecomau) from his site. Do yourself a favor and save your bandwidth.
that prototype does look very appleish. thin, aluminum. absolutely no peripheral ports.....yea.
i hope thats it though.
Sound s like this without the holografic thing http://blog.jfremy.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/1202_icom_text_10002.jpg
If it is like that I would like to buy a lot of that things to have in every desktop of my office and have communication over the net and all of my employess through this. It woul be so cool!!!
everyone should know it wont be a "netbook"
what it WILL be is a connected touchscreen tablet that will destroy the kindle and replace textbooks in schools, as it be will launched alongside a new itunes bookstore. Of course it will be do this and everything else and Apple will once again perfect and streamline yet another market with this next device
