ASUS Eee PC 1008HA reportedly priced at £359
We're not totally sure we believe this just yet, but Notebook Choice has it that ASUS' Eee PC 1008HA -- which we got up close and personal with at CeBIT -- will begin shipping out across the pond next month. Reportedly, the base price will hover around £359 ($518), but again, we're not completely getting our hearts set on that 'til we hear something from the mouth of ASUS (or a legitimate distributor). Honestly though, that price sounds about right; as beautiful as it is, we were pretty underwhelmed by its very netbook-like performance during our brief time with it.

I really like net books though it pisses me off when people in the UK have to pay absurd prices.
Hey, it pisses me off that the UK gets all these models first. The hell is that about?
Could it be the 15% VAT is included in this price, where US prices are without taxes? If so, the price would be £312, which is US$450. Still a lot, but wait till you see the price in €...
.......how is that even relavent?
Its relevant because the headline has the price in English currency and i agree with him. 359 pounds is over $500, im sure it wont be that much when it goes on sale over here in the US.
Looks very nice, but again the price is getting to high for netbook... They are just not worth $500 or more and I think even $450 is pushing it...
It will probably be cheaper than that in the US.
A netbook with netbook-like performance... woah! If it didn't have netbook-like performance it would just be a laptop, and cost twice as much.
New intern day? :)
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I've got a 1000HE. I'm out of the netbook game until dual core chips and the next revision of Ion
If you got a 1000HE you are totally in the netbook game!! ;P
hey, how about telling us your impressions about the 1000HE? Amazon price is very good and I might be interrested as it is the netbook with the best reviews.
Xp run ok on it? can you use most softwares normally? any games installed?
the 1000he is simply the best netbook on the market. Xp runs great, windows 7 FLIES!
Upgrade the ram to 2gb and you're set. I run itunes, google sketch up and ms offiice simultaneously with no hiccup. Battery life is a 7 hours 30 mins with wifi on and screen at moderate brightness. Turn off wifi and dim the lights and could squeeze 9 hours of text editing!
Its light, quiet, chiclet style keyboard is a pleasure to type on and most importantly it costs less than 400 bucks!
I bought my mom a 1000he, and she likes it, but I must say that although it is really cool, it is really underpowered, but my 2 computers are way more powerful than it, so my words there mean little. The trackpad has multi-touch which is a nice idea, and its pretty large for a netbook. I thought the n280 processor would make it somewhat fast, seeing as i added 2 gigs of ram, but god it is sluggish by my standards. Really cool computer though, I paid like $412 for it, with express shipping and 2 gigs of memory, so a really good deal. Oh, and the screen is low resolution, i was surprised by how large everything was, but again, it is a
I got the 1000H. I don't see much differences between 1000HE and 1000HA. I'll stick with what I got :). Plus, I can change my WiFi card in the 1000H.
Not worth a £60 premium over the 299 I paid for my sleek Mini 1000. Besides that the keyboard is looking very cheap against the high glow finish.
P.S check out the ugly directional keys.
ZOMG!!! "Ugly" directional keys... now I won't want to have sex with my laptop! or people won't want to have sex with me cause of my laptop's "ugly" directional keys.. not sure which you are going for.
I am sorry. The "Eee PC" logo just kills the design for me.
yeah, that logo is terrible, look very very cheap. On the other hand, the 1000HE is really classy looking. Just put a sticker on that crappy eee logo.
Maybe it performed like a netbook because it IS a netbook. Crazy thought, I know.
Wow, Engadget seems to have this unnatural hatred for Asus. First it was complaining about how there were too many Eee PC models despite the fact that Asus is one of the few original laptop manufacturers and have always had a wealth of laptop models. Just check out their website.
Now one of their netbooks is being bashed for having netbook performance? What's the point of reporting on something you have an obvious bias against?
It isn't being bashed for its netbook performance, it is being bashed for its performance based on its price point. The thing is, the internals and specs are exactly equal to cheaper netbooks out there right now, and yet this carries quite a hefty premium based on its thinness. While people tend to pay more for form over function, it seems, the big problem with this is that, at a certain price point, the function of a netbook becomes inequal to its price. Why spend that kind of cash on the type of machine that's been billed as a "cheap computer for web browsing."
Though I suppose everyone has their own personal wants when it comes to buying a netbook. I look for that sweet spot between size, weight, speed, and battery life.
Battery life is a major point, for me, which leads me to my next point; the 1008HA won't even have the "all day computing" perk that, say, a 1000HE offers. You would have to wait for an eventual 1008HE, assuming it was even going to be released.
I meant "being biased", not "bashed."
I can understand that it's too expensive for the Atom's performance. Although, like you said, people pay for form over function. The Vaio P is even worse, yet I don't remember the strict hatred shown toward's that. If it has an Atom CPU, you pretty much know what to expect. It's up to the consumer to determine if the other features are worth the price.
I've used hp mini ,acer 1, Asus 1000h, dell mini 10. Don't know what it is but Asus seems to have an edge over rest,.paid $390
I love my blue 1000HE.
It plays streaming Netflix videos, and my umm ahh.. xvid/divx files perfectly. The screen size and overall size (and weight) is just right, so that I can just pick it up and move to another area (owrk or home, from room to room) while doing things, and take what I'm watching or listening to with me. I like having a movie ot tv show always on in the background.
It's been very handy while playing D&D. Now I don't carry an extra 8lbs of books, paper and dice, just my 3.4lbs netbook, which lasts through an entire night or afternoon game, plus my travel time to get to a friends house and back.
I've noticed less strain on my shoulder/back from carrying it, as oppsed to my 14" laptop. (For those of you about to tell me I should have gotten a macbook, they cost too much for me. This cost me $340 and does the job, and I do think it looks nice.)
On top of those issues, it plays Starcraft and runs the game emulators I use for when I want some gaming diversion on the go. I didn't buy it to do gaming on a 10" screen, but the few times I've wanted a bit of gaming diversion, it did the job. I wouldn't play newer games on a 10" screen, and I don't know why anyone would want to beyond "bragging rights", which I don't care about.
Anyway, you get the point. It's light (enough) while being small - yet large enough. It doesn't generate a ton of heat. I can use it comfortably just chilling out on the couch/bed/train/plane/park/coffee shop, and it's no hassle.
Maybe one day it'd be handy to have it encode video on the run or somesuch higher-end use, but for now..
