Global Sony announcement rumored for tomorrow, unicorns practically a lock
Take it for what it's worth, but Smarthouse has it on authority that Sony Computer Entertainment is gearing up to make a worldwide announcement tomorrow, and believe it or not, it could involve the PlayStation 3. Analysts (and patient consumers) have been anticipating a PS3 price drop ever since, oh, December 26th of last year, but we've seen absolutely zero evidence to make us believe that one is coming within the next 24 hours. And as Joystiq points out, each Sony region sets its own PS3 price independently. At any rate, we reckon a joint PS2 / PS3 price slashing could be on the table, but we'd highly recommend not getting your hopes up too high. Who knows -- we could be getting all worked up over a new firmware that unlocks HD DVD support.

I am guessing details on the next ps3 firmware update or information on final fantasy versus 13 will be revealed (square enix is also announcing something this week).
Please let it be the PS THREE with 60 nm (45 nm?) cell chip.
I think the unicorn is more likely...
I don't think that moving to 45nm process or whatever warrants a worldwide press announcement as 99% of the potential customers do not know what it means, let alone care.
If it's not about a price drop then something major is going to happen to the PS3 firmware (PS2 compatibility by firmware upgrade, is it possible?).
stop kidding yourselves... its just going to be an announcement for PS3 in an all new colour!
@ouj
Its not the firmware that makes PS3 play PS2 Games overall. There is something inside the 60gb version that makes the machine able to run it at the price of over heating. I mean without my fans on my 60gb my PS3 would be a oven by now!!
All the firmwares do for compatability is allow it to understand the different coding on different games.
If it's a "PS Three" it would also mean a smaller package and a redesign; that would no doubt be worth a global announcement.
@ bjsfreaked: The 60gb version does have hardware to emulate ps2, but the newer 80gb does it via software.
So, hopefully, but doubtful. I actually set up my ps2 next to the 40gb ps3 in my living room the other day.
@engadget: Wha? I've been waiting for a good price drop since 11/17/06.
I think they're finally moving to 45nm with a smaller form factor, it'll save them a bundle on shipping and fab costs.
But please, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me support for something besides this FAT32 bullshit. Oh, and I'd love it if you could support .mkv, but that'll never happen.
@NoAndThen:
You're wrong about PS2 emulation on the PS3. The newest models DO NOT emulate PS2 games in any manner whatsoever. They do emulate PS1 games, like all PS3s though. Only the 2007 80GB model emulates PS2 games, and not very well either.
In theory Sony could indeed reintroduce PS2 emulation but considering that they gave the consumers a big fisting about how it didn't matter anymore (despite the fact they're still selling PS2 consoles...), it's highly unlikely.
@ Bjsfreaked
It's called the Emotion Engine that allows full PS2 BC, I have a Launch Day 60gig as well. No overheating but POWER SURGES will Fuck it up. Just got a brand spankin new 60Gig from Sony. NOT A REFURBISH. You see in our beloved 60Gigs we have a full PStwo Motherboard. That is why there is a different power supply and the dang thing gives off more heat than most space heaters. It's also the reason ours use as much electricity as 3 Refrigerators and why all the latest models don't. I'm hoping for something alot different.
45nm chips were announced pre-xmas. They should be in circulation for the past few months.
60GB models had pretty much the entire PS2 in there, 80GB had the GPU off the PS2, and emulated the EmotionEngine(CPU)
40GB n onwards had neither the CPU or GPU, though if Sony got off there arse I'm sure a full emulation is possible on the Cell, cos my PC which has no part's form a PS2 can run PS2 games fine without an 8-core 3.2ghz chip.
It's more than likely the PS2 price drop. but one can hope for a PS3 price drop.
A PS3 that can read another format besides fat32.........
What's problem with FAT32?
It's not that NTFS is suited in any capacity for external drives... Permission/etc... are not easy workaround. And AFAIK M$ doesn't license NTFS on-disk format. Linux has REd driver, but I doubt Sony can use it without angering M$.
I personally would take Linux' good ol' ext2 as second (after FAT) most portable option for external drives. ext2 can be read on virtually any OS and you do not need a nod from Redmond to use it.
A "worldwide" announcement just for a price drop...that seems a bit of a stretch.
It'll probably be a couple of things....but we are in desperate need of new firmware.
Weren't Square Enix rumoured to be announcing Kingdom Hearts 3...perhaps that'll be the "secret" PS3 exclusive...though surely Sony would save that for E3.
Oh well, we'll find out tomorrow.
A worldwide announcement just before Nintendo starts its DSi campaign...
Sounds like the perfect chance for a PSP2 announcement....
Price cut is really the only thing that can help them with market share, but who knows if they can afford one.
ooo, will we finally get a magenta PSP? or maybe even glow in the dark?
I like both of those ideas
Hopefully they announce Netflix among other things.
The reason sales have been so poor lately is because everyone is waiting for a price drop. I had an accident with my PS3 taking it to a friend's house and have been waiting for the price drop to replace it. Two people I know are also waiting for the price drop to buy one. At this point they're not going to get any sales until the cut the price because everyone is expecting a price drop any day now.
Come on now....people have been waiting for a price drop over a year. If the last 10 price drop rumor wasn't true...what makes you think this one is. I guess if you can hold it off then go ahead. I'd be tired and buy one by now. I hope my original ps3 with backward compatibility never breaks....well it did and they sent me another one, but hopefully it doesn't break again, by then it's probably out of warranty.
Well, even if the last rumours weren't true, it eventually has to happen. :)
HD DVD on the ps3? Is that possible?
Yes. And they are also announcing external, Sony-branded add-ons to play laser discs and Betamax videos.
Well both use blue laser diodes so I'd assume its only requires a software upgrade.
HD DVD is dead fool
I heard that SCEA was building some super-cluster in Las Vegas to host a huge game, 1000x bigger than WoW.
"Who knows -- we could be getting all worked up over a new firmware that unlocks HD DVD support." Better yet how about a firmware upgrade for the 360 HD DVD player that supports blu-ray? Yeah I don't see that happening either....
I'm holding out for a redesigned slim one and/or the 45nm processors. I know I've probably still got some waiting to do. But I'm just that vain. :-P
Do you even know what "Vain" means? http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vain
The context you are trying to use it in, is Wrong and it makes you look unintelligent.
@SOOPERGOOMAN
If you are going to correct grammar, learn where commas and capitalized letters are supposed to go.
@Josh
You're so vain
I'll bet you think grammer nazi was coined about you
Don't you? Don't you?
Goober: I don't know what you are talking about...his use makes sense...even in light of your link. Please explain.
Thanks
PSP Phone with MMS, background apps, tethering, cut & paste, touchscreen and motion sensitivity.
i would so buy that bc we all know the iphone is a piece of shit.
AGREED^
Bought an IPhone then a Storm. Realized after I'm better off using two cups and a string.
Serge hates the iPhone because he lives in his mothers basement and can't afford one.
Access to the hard drive from PC would be great. I can just place stuff directly to my 250gb ps3 hard drive and eliminate the streaming to it. Because that doesn't work as smoothly as I like over wireless. Oh and make it ntfs or something, not fat32.
I seriously doubt that it's a price drop or support for HD. I mean why would they go supporting dead hardware and ruin their bluray sales. What's left of HD dvd is dirt cheap movies, but I doubt that it's going to make anyone buy a ps3. My guess is a firmware that enables more function, which is always nice. Improvements on existing stuff.
UMMMM PIRACY IS BAD and that's what your idea would eventually lead to. Think about it...
I'm hoping they're going to announce a price drop. Here in Australia they're charging $699 AUD which is more than twice the cost of an xbox 360 and a good $200-250 more than the wii. Maybe they'll also announce that TV add on for countries who haven't got...i.e Australia lol.
It's the PS2 price drop, nothing more.
I bet it'll be a $50 price drop on the ps3 and the ps2. With some (read: a lot) of luck it'll be news of a new UMD-free PSP.
Its gonna be PS3 Slim with FULL BC back 299$ with 2 free Bundled Games Killzone 2 And Uncharted 1 plus they will upgrade the HD from 80GB to 120GB
and then Nintendo will finally release Earthbound 64. . . I'm with you buddy.
We need earth bound for the wii.... i cant wait to swing that bat!
The new PSP?
All I want to know if the Gran Turismo release date. Has Sony stopped making games?
A release date for Gran Turismo 5 with full damage on all cars...that would be as sweet, sweet announcement.
I really want a in-car view. PGR has a very good version of this but Forza does not. I prefer the look and feel of PGR but the physics of GT/Forza.
Sony has yet to pull off a big name title for the PS3(maybe MGS). I still remember twisted metal at the launch of the PS2 but Uncharted is the only PS3 game to really interest me. Also, Home and bluray live are more examples of the total crap they are dishing. If Microsoft can come out with a new console next year that is backwards compatible with the 360, with bluray, quieter and improved graphics I think Sony will be dead.
@fastm3driver
GT5: Prologue has a great in car view.
