Sony: 'no plans' for a PS3 price cut
That PlayStation 3 price drop rumored to be coming tomorrow? Not happening, according to Sony. In a statement given to Joystiq, SCEA public relations manager Al De Leon says, "we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation." Although we wouldn't put it past the company to deny it up until the second before an official announcement, we seriously doubt Sony would announce any sort of price cut on the day it's most likely to get drowned out by fake PSP2 mockups. No word on that speculated $100 PS2, but we wouldn't get our hopes up here, either.

sony needs to do this, imo
That's ok. I'm not planning on a PS3 or PS2 purchase os they can price them whatever they like. :P
I'll buy another one when a price drop happens.
Can't have 2 TVs and only 1 PS3. That's just crazy.
In response to the response:
Gamers say,
"we do not have plans to buy a PS3, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation."
Until Sony does a much needed price drop, Xbox 360 and Wii FTW by a large margin.
Sony should have NEVER gotten rid of the 20GB HDD model.
They coulda priced that one where the HDD-less Xbox360 is and kept prices high on the 80 as it phased out the 60. But getting rid of Backwards compatibility ont he new models has me REALLY pissed at SONY and the only games I ever woulda used it with for that were Contra: shattered soldier and Gradius V.
It sucks that PS3 finally has good games but costs so much more than a 360.
Short lived dream
Don't worry. That means, no plans until tomorrow.
Me: 'no plans' for a PS3 purchase.
lol, indeed. my thoughts exactly.
its going to be interesting to see how sony and ms try to correct these expensive c0ckups next time around.
and I thought I was so clever when this was the first thing that came to mind...
...meaning, it was probably what many people were thinking :D
I hear ya, but it's not like you were going to buy one if they did cut the price anyway.
PS3 might be more expensive but it's the Mac of the console world. Better design, better and more reliable hardware. Like with a PC, you spend more time repairing the Xbox than playing on it. Enjoy your RROD.
Keep telling yourself that. Looks like the Apple Kool-Aid has spilled over into the PS3 forums.
@ Proud Japanese
And the Nissan GT-R is the Godzilla, until it becomes limpzilla when it grenades its transmission... Wonder if PS3 will do something like that?
Spend more time repairing it then enjoying it? You are diluted my friend. My PS3 has died only once but Sony wouldn't honor their warranty and wanted me to pay 160 plus s/h. My 360 has died a few times but they were always repaired free of charge. I get more play time on my 360 than any of my other consoles.
Indeed, the PS3 has build quality issues of its own, especially with its fucking Blu-Ray drive failing and Sony charging $150 for it outside the warranty when its clearly a design defect, they need to recall and fix it for FREE like MS has for the RROD.
@Proud Japanese
I bought my PS3 at launch. The Bluray part of it died after a month or so.
Even then I had to jump through hoops to get it replaced. I mean honestly, the thing has been out for a couple of months, and you need proof of purchase (which I did have)?
And the fact that Sony would not sell me an extended warranty really had me worried about their confidence in their product.
So the PS3 is not the pillar of granite that you tout it to be.
I love my PS3 and haven't had any problems with it. I have YDL installed, use it to play media from thumbsticks when I'm using both of my monitors, and of course I have games to play too. Plus, Sony adds random features to it fairly regularly. Plus, there's no external power brick which is a huge plus in my book.
where is the response dumb but proud japanese??
sigh, flamebait is so fun to respond to.
@MIA: Anecdotal evidence is one thing, objective failure rate statistics is another. Microsoft doesn't know how to make good hardware or software. Why do people still buy their products.
Hey, it's their sales figures.
fricken facepalm. jeez. do they even care any more?!
This will be the same old, tired news that we'll be seeing until the day the Blu-ray feature of PS3 is rendered obsolete.
this probably wont happen again, but the last around of price cut, they announced that they wouldn't do it a day before they cut the price on ps3.
You could have a new price banner hanging in the background while interviewing the public relations manager and they would still deny that a price drop was going to happen anytime soon. Its the corporate line till the "official" release date of the information comes.
good, i just bought one 2 days ago :p
Wouldn't you wish for a price reduction in the nest 28 days then...
then id have made a loss...
But then you could take it back get a full refund and buy it again?
now its too late. I dont give a toss...

Release a non-blu-ray PS3
(Are the games BD?)
I'm pretty sure the games are on Blu-Ray.
That would not only cause Sony to have to open up a whole new wing of tech support from all the angry calls of people buying Blu-ray PS3 games instead of DVD ones, but would require that games have two production lines for DVD and Blu-ray. Baaaaaaaaaad idea.
Games are Blu-Ray.
The price has already dropped $100 since launch, what more do people want? I paid $500 for my Motorstorm pack last February and I'd gladly pay $500 again if I needed a seperate Ps3.
If $50 determines whether or not people buy a Ps3, then they might want to re-consider their financial situation. At $500, it's a damn good bargain, at $400, it's a steal.
PS3 games are all BD format, even if they're small enough (< 8.4 GB) to fit on a dual-layered DVD. The firmware enforces this rule (makes pirating/backup games non-worthwhile, since bluray discs aren't very cheap).
@fist
Some people say that the PS3 is a good value, some say that the current price is a good deal. The thing is a deal and value are, much like beauty, in the eye of the beholder. To some, the current price is justified, when I got mine - a 60GB - I paid the original price only because I had to get a Blu-Ray player (for work purposes) and it was the cheapest at the time. To me the price was not justified but I was stuck. Today, to a large number of people, at the current price it is not a good deal nor a hold as much value that you believe it has. Why pay a premium for a BD player when not everyone has a HDTV? Why pay a premium when there are relatively few (compared to multiplat) exclusive games over the 360? Wi-Fi does may not mean as much to some as it does to you.
So while you enjoy your PS3, and I enjoy mine only for BD playback (the only game I have is the PSN Q-Bert), to many others, the value is not there and it is not a great deal. People have considered their financial situation, and decided that the $50/$100 is not worth it and some other system is a better deal or has more value.
"Why pay a premium when there are relatively few (compared to multiplat) exclusive games over the 360?"
Looks like you don't pay attention to the PS3 games at all then. I don't know of one good 360 exclusive that came out last year, while the PS3 had a couple. And already this year the PS3 started out with hitting the 360 hard with Killzone 2 and there are more to come.
Also, it really isn't a premium. If you would get all the extras for the 360 to make it match the PS3, then the price will be the same (if I recall correctly, the PS3 might even be cheaper).
Patriks7, the point is though that those additional things are just that for the 360. They are optional. Allowing people to purchase the features they wanted as opposed to having a full package forced on them.
There was also a lot of great exclusives for the 360 last year and the 360 has been doing so well recently it has begun to surpass the PS3 in Japan which is a pretty big deal.
I am a happy PS3 and 360 owner but killzone 2 was not a hard hit at all. Infact it failed pretty bad and although it sold well, it didn't not generate as much interest as intended. Nearly all the games i buy (even multi-platform) i buy for my 360 since i feel the experience is better. I, like the guy above, use my PS3 mostly for blu-ray movies and little big planet.
They're not gonna admit a price drop, even one day ahead of planned...
Why lose sales the day before?
because admitting it doesn't f up their credibility?
In the past, a Sony announcement stating they weren't dropping prices meant that you could guarantee they will drop the price in the next few days.
