That
PlayStation 3 price drop rumored to be coming tomorrow? Not happening, according to Sony. In a statement given to
Joystiq, SCEA public relations manager Al De Leon says, "we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation." Although we wouldn't put it past the company to deny it up until the second before an official announcement, we seriously doubt Sony would announce any sort of price cut on the day it's most likely to get drowned out by fake
PSP2 mockups. No word on that speculated
$100 PS2, but we wouldn't get our hopes up here, either.
makes sense...?
Of course it makes sense. If people anticipate a price drop in the near-term, it would be detrimental to current sales. Especially if the planned price drop is much later.
Intentionally spreading rumors of a price drop would be bad for Sony. IMO, this is why most of the price-drop speculation has been fueled by 360 fanboys and MS shills.
Personal Update: No plans to buy PS3. Any rumours to the contrary are just speculation.
By saying they have 'no plans' to lower the price.. Does that mean that, we won't ever see a price cut? Even if the components to make the PS3 become cheaper? Don't they NEED a plan, to sometime plan ahead to cut down the price of the PS3? *head explodes*
Sony really needs to do this. As it is right now I do love my PS3 but lately i've been liking the Xbox 360 even more. So much so that I actually want to get another one for my bedroom. Why? Just for movies/music on an external hard drive and Netflix. Even the $200 version will do the job. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have good games, but it just seems like i'm buying mostly Xbox 360 games. I really do think Netflix is helping to sell the 360 in some ways.
Unfortunately the Xbox 360 doesn't quite have as many downloadable old games as the Wii. I sold my Wii console and really do miss all those old games you could download like Super Punchout, Star Tropics and Mario 3 etc.
I'm still amazed they haven't even lowered the PS2 price. Isn't it like $130 still now? That's not good considering you still need to buy decent cables and a memory card. I just recently bought a used one for $65 that's in good shape just for all the old RPGs they have on it.
waaa waaa PS3 cost too much waaa!!! Gimme a break, stop freakin' whining about it already. I bought mine when it launched and never looked back, it was an excellent investment then and is one now.
Situation as stands:
If you have a PS3, No price drop
If you dont have a PS3, Price drop please
I fall into the latter camp, i like stuff what costs less than the same stuff earlier in time, or something or nothing
10 bucks says its Netflix on PS3 "Watch it now" feature.
Stop playing with my heart! I've been waiting to buy a new one after a terrible ebay experience.
I bought my 60GB fully backwards compatible PS3 at launch for $600.
I'd gladly pay it again.
I got the 40GB, but if the 60GB was still on sale for 600$ I would by it without a second thought. And sale the 40GB.
Just buy via Dell when they have their specials and also buy a Dell gift card via ebay....voila.
Got my 60gb for $316...I'm not complaining. :)
i agree... its going to be netflix .. wouldnt be surprised if its also ps2 and psp2 but no price cut
why would there be a global announcement for a US only service? :s
Had they made the bluray optional (for movies only, and the games on dvd, still), they could have cut the price down for those people who don't need a bluray player.
They just started to turn a profit on the PS3 and barely. If they drop the price now, they will just lose more money.
Here in the Netherlands the ps2's price dropped a couple of days ago to 100 euro at some retailers, so there could well be a US price drop.
i did'nt wait - i purchased the $499.99 unit and figured id get a price adjustment from bestbuy in 30 days if it happens if not oh well i wanted one
They don't need a price drop.
Yes they do. They are bordering on irrelevant. Wii is cheap, and trendy, so everybody wants one even if they don't buy many games. XB360 is where all the online action is at to play with buddies. That leaves PS3 with what exactly? Everything "extra" is all Sony tie-ins... blu-ray, movies, music, etc. There's good stuff there, just not good ENOUGH stuff to buy a THIRD system, especially at that price. It's not just the PS3, but all the extras that are marked up $10-$20 more than the other guys also.
What's worse is that the media around PS3 seems to be that they're just going to "sit on it" another 3-4 years, then get around to updates or a new system. That's crazy, but one thing Microsoft understood when they broke Xbox/360 compatibility... people buy it to play it RIGHT NOW. They went after new games, and online play from day one of 360 and have kept the new things coming every few months... reasons to keep that 360 out of the closet! By the time Sony gets really good games every body will have been PLAYING good games other places. Even Wii is losing on that front because Nintendo's not keeping the announced/promised games coming let alone new games. A lot of Wii's are sitting... who's gonna buy a PS3 with $400 in the closet?
@mabhatter
Wait a minute? Xcrap online better than Sony's. What is you smoking? I go online on my Ps3 everyday since i bought the thing. No problem whatsoever, there always alot of peeps online and we didn't pay a dime. You probably don't have any homies, which makes paying for your service ridiculous. I watch all my amines and read all of my emails. Your just miserable.
First time I played on PSN, I couldn't talk to anyone. 50 open router ports later, still couldn't. Two weeks later, I could talk to people on NBA Live 09, but not on Vegas. Finally, I could talk on all games, but not to every player. I have no ideal what was wrong, never could figure it out. Two months later, I got tired of it and just played my game sans voicechat. Also, I had alot of problems with my bluetooth headset losing signal or disconnecting. It's a jawbone and works all phones and PCs I've used it with without problems. *That is more hardware, but it still pissed me off* Over all, I still stand by my statement that PSN feels tacked on and clunky.
On my Xbox, it has worked from day one. 50 dollars a YEAR isn't bad what-so-ever. If 50 dollars a year would fix the problems I had with PSN or make it a better experience, it lacks overall when compared to XBL I think, then I would gladly pay it. The way PSN is right now, I wouldn't give them 5 dollars a year for it.
To each their own. I'm sure you've played on Live with good players like I did on PSN to make your statment. Ether way, don't think your opinion is shared by everyone or even the population at large.
I dont' see them making a price drop anyways. Besides, are they even making money on each console sold yet?
My guess it that it's a PS3 Slim.
My guess is* that it's a PS3 Slim.
Why would they do that? They're in last place as far as total consoles sold goes. A PS3 slim would mean a price JUMP. That's exactly what they don't want.
that's too bad. If they did drop the price $100 I'd probably snap one up the next day. As is I don't have a 360 or a wii or a ps3, or any console. Maybe I'll jump in the next generation.
YOU SUCK SONY!!!
I guess I won't be buying one till 2010 then, post FF13 release.
There really is no need for a price cut. They really need to just market the ps3 better. ps3 really is cheaper than the 360 IF you need wifi. Not to mention the 50 dollars a year for online play or 12.99 a month or something like that. Overall, sony just needs to market that it is so much value for the money and mention a little something about the failure rate of 360. I have no idea why Sony lets 360 failure rate slide in their marketing! Every person I know is on at least their second Xbox. My new jasper 360 is scratching games, and if it weren't for GOW my 360 would be a paper weight. Also it doesn't help mentioning the durability of the blu ray disks themselves. Anyway, Microsoft did a hell of a job marketing their console, but any informed gamer knows ps3 really is the best value for your money.
Please don't compare the PSN to Xbox Live, it is a losing battle for Sony. Live is about a millions times better than PSN and is well worth the $50 a year, which is chicken feed for christ sakes.
There was no real comparison with the xbox live. I agree it is much better than PSN, but at the same time I am afraid to turn on my xbox due to the fact that it scratches my dvds. And if 50 dollars a year is "chicken feed" then why is the 100 dollar price difference even a factor in the 360 vs ps3 battle? That comment only helps portray just how small a price you pay for a better built machine. I have had my ps3 for over 2 years and have not had a problem, whereas most of my friends who own 360 are on their 2nd and 3rd machines. There is no doubt 360 has a few decent exclusive games, and the online is boombastic, but i would gladly pay 100 dollars more for 20 extra gigs, built-in wifi, discs that are near impossible to scratch, a machine that rarely breaks down, easy access to a larger harddrive, the ability to transfer movies, music, and photos via wifi, a blu ray drive, chargeable controllers, and FREE mediocre online play.
Blah, blah, blah... Sony does need a $300 PS3!! Its third place in the console wars and Blu-Ray is still not taking off with the general public.
I'm happy gaming on my Wii and 360 but want a PS3 for Blu-Ray. I was getting ready to buy one with this rumored price cut, but I can wait until they pull their head out of their a$$. I've got a friend with a PS3 game library so I'll borrow some exclusives to see what all the PS3 fanboys are shouting about in their posts.
There shouldn't be a PS3 price cut. Do I want a price cut? OF COURSE I DO. But there are Blu-ray players more expensive than the PS3. Sony is already losing money on each unit...
I "HOPE" the rumored announcement's proximity to the DSi campaign means it has something to do with a PSP2...
All this really says is "Blu-Ray is too damned expensive for no reason."
Couldn't care less, I wouldn't buy it if they dropped it $200
I'm right there with ya, brutha.
Pewp. I'll just buy an Xbox 360 instead.
Crap, crap, crap!! I really wanted Sony to drop the price.
No price cut? No slimline version? No interest.
This system is still overpriced and it still only has ONE game i desire to play.
I have some vacation days coming up and I plan to buy a PS3 and rent MGS4.
After i complete MGS4 I will pack that PS3 back into it's box and promptly return it for a full refund.
Then i will have absolutely no reason to think of the PS3
Man, if you want a PS3 and don't have one yet, cuz you are waiting for a price drop. That you are one cheap bastard!!! Hell if Sony drops the price, I'll buy another one.
Give it till Christmas.
If Sony doesn't drop it by then, what about any kind of PS-4,5,6 whatever. Goodbye ps3!
Idiots should have done this a long time ago...bad move.
sony bullshits and denies always!
I was thinking about getting a ps3 but they dont have shit for games. And i heard from alot of people their online sucked monkey balls.I have a 360 elite and its great yeah so its 50 bones a year to play online but who cares its bad-ass.And as far as people sayin oh yeah but sony has blu-ray F*ck blu-ray yeah i want to pay 30 dollars to buy a movie on blu-ray or yeah i want to pay more to rent that on blu-ray i have a 50in plasma and i think dvd's thru my elite look great.By the way netflix blows the movies you can stream instantly to your xbox suck its all old shit or gay shit, they need to let you stream the new releases those cheap bastards.Just my few cents.peace.
I really did want a PS3..... Now I really want to spend that money on things that better look out for the consumer.....
Sony is running out of bullets after shooting themselves in the foot so many times!
