NVIDIA's GT300 specs outed -- is this the cGPU we've been waiting for?
NVIDIA's been dabbling in the CPU space behind closed doors for years now, but with Intel finally making a serious push into the GPU realm, it's about time the firm got serious with bringing the goods. BSN has it that the company's next-generation GT300 will be fundamentally different than the GT200 -- in fact, it's being hailed as the "first truly new architecture since SIMD (Single-Instruction Multiple Data) units first appeared in graphical processors." Beyond this, the technobabble runs deep, but the long and short of it is this: NVIDIA could be right on the cusp of delivering a single chip that can handle tasks that were typically separated for the CPU and GPU, and we needn't tell you just how much your life could change should it become a reality. Now, if only NVIDIA would come clean and lift away some of this fog surrounding it (and the rumored GTX 380), that'd be just swell.

I was thinking the same thing that we moved to a modular approach and now it seems we're moving back to an all in one.
Typo: next GPU gemeration*
And does*
Sorry about the typos
Take your time. I'm waiting for Pro Evo 2010 this fall before upgrading.
The source is no good, don't trust anything from brightsideofnews.com as Theo is known for making up stories when he can't get a scoop. He used to work for the Inquirer but they got rid of him because he got them into a lot of trouble. Then he went on to working for Tom's who also let him go...
Is this a good time to start a slow clap?
I'd get an Nvidia based desktop/notebook
I like their products
sorta wonder if ATI/AMD is working on similar technology
AMD Fusion
Yeah, They've been working on that since 2006 and its due in 2011 and even that's not certain.
AMD's having a party with 3D Realms.
Well, they could go down the Transmeta route and do a software x86 code translator into CUDO or something else. It might be possible, as it's been done before.
Yes, but it makes kittens cry.
I like Nvidia and all, but now they're just annoying with this compete with Intel stuff. Why can't they just work together to make a better platform overall instead of fighting each other on the other guy's turf?
Because Intel likes to monopolize and dominate the competition. So no, Nvidia isn't just annoying.
UHm, well nvidia was for ages all annoying with their SLI certification, can't blame intel for that one can you? they are all the same really, their CEO's and business plan makers all come from the same schools and get taught the same cutthroath silly theories, it's only a few really rich individuals that can step above that, but those don't have the time for each tiny detail, and to correct all those model-pushing types.
Because competition breeds excellence. Both companies are trying to make money. Nvidia makes a good product, and people start buying it instead of Intel's. Then Intel is forced to make an even better product at lower prices, and so on and so forth. It's what's best for the consumer.
The old Intel was really crappy about stomping all over the competition. But the new Intel is way better. It actually competes and makes quality products. But this new pissing match between Nvidia and Intel is really going to confuse consumers with terms like CUDA and GPGPU entering the mainstream thanks to Nvidia.
All well then. By the way, these GPGPU products consume power like crazy. It's good that Intel is focusing on performance per watt, but Nvidia seems to not care so much unfortunately.
Competition leads to innovation, my friend.
I know, competition is great. It's just getting so confusing. I'm already confused about CUDA, GPcGPU, Physx and a dozen other things lol.
"The old Intel was really crappy about stomping all over the competition. But the new Intel is way better."
You're joking, right?
Don't kid yourself. Intel has the same leadership now as they did during P4/Netburst fiasco, infringing on competitor's architectures (DEC Alpha), and the anti-competitive agreements set up with the likes of Dell, HP, etc. They single-handedly destroyed viable competitors with good products (DEC, Transmeta) not by having superior product and marketing, but by simply coercing system manufacturers to carry intel chips. They're about as anti-competitive as one can get.
This is the same company now. They're not a clean, reformed company. They might have good technology at the moment, but don't forget that they wouldn't even bother trying right now (Core2, i7, Larrabee, etc) without the likes of AMD and nvidia nipping at its heels.
But will it run Duke Nukem Forever?
I'm only 16 and want to be a computer engineer , should I be excited about this thing because I don't even understand it.
I'm sure that the price tag included won't be 'what I've been waiting for'.. :p
Estimated retail price of $FirstBornBaby.
Will everything this time round have the GT300 core? Like the GTS250 is running the G92 (correct me if I am wrong) because its just a renamed 9800GTX+. I am guessing they have the ditched the __00G__ (9800GTX, 8600GT) naming scheme for this new one altogether. So will this time round will the GTS350 be the new core?
They still have some old G92s that need remarking .... :)
Buy ATI graphics .... at least they know who to redsign CPUs
NOT just remake to OLD ones ...
Yeah like the innovative 4890 which is only exactly the same as a 4870 but apart from that all innovative, in that the 7 was changed to 9.
nvidia can't even make decent running graphics currently. They have the technology but quality has not been a strong point for them as of recent.
Are you referring to the hardware (not made by nVidia) or the software?
While nVidia was responsible for more than half of Windows Vista crashes within the first year or so of Vista's launch, the drivers are now nearly flawless.
My EVGA GTX 260 is rock solid, as are the drivers provided by nVidia.
So... how are you meant to plug in the monitor?
Sounds like exactly what Apple's working on with Grand Central.
The next few years are going to be a very exciting time for computing tech advancement well beyond anything we've seen.
Figures, I just ordered a 285.
Um... looks great - but what's with the fact that it has no DVI or other outputs?
