Averatec hints at an Android netbook
We're not sure why Android is suddenly the hottest netbook OS in town, but we'd guess it's about to hit the scene in a big way at Computex next month. Today's whispers? Averatec CEO Tae-Hyun Cho says his company will ship a new netbook with a "surprise" OS that blends "cell phone and PC technology" in August or September. Very mysterious. That's literally all we know for now, but Cho's comments about what consumers are willing to pay has us thinking this one'll come in cheap -- we'll keep an eye out.

Cheep is gud. Functionality while remaining cheap is better.
And cheap is exactly what you'll get too. I have an Averatec AV7115-EH1 17" Notebook that was less than a year when i needed service for it. The power jack wasn't working and the laptop stopped charging. 2 months after i bought it, I have DVD drive issues and 5 months in the LCD cover started getting a nasty creak. After 8 months, that creak turned to a crack on both sides of the LCD hinges. I contacted customer support. Their solution was to unplug the laptop, take the battery out, and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds then plug everything back in. Seriously? WTF!?!? For a hardware defect? I fought back and forth with their support department making numerous calls only to be hung up on, until the day came when my warranty expired. I got a nice reply from their customer support staff saying, "Sorry we can't help you, your computer isn't under warranty anymore". So now i have a nice 17inch laptop with a defective power board (no OEM or Aftermarket replacements available), cracked LCD hinges, and a busted DVD burner and Averatec refused to fix my issues when they were under warranty. I will never buy another "cheap" laptop again.
wide laptop is funny
is that the laptop avartec will introduce???
its sexy!
"a 'surprise' OS that blends "cell phone and PC technology" in August or September. Very mysterious"
...WWAN connectivity + lighter resource OS burden of a phone with the larger capacity battery and screen of a PC = win?
"Surprise" OS could be anything from WinMo to Linux...
Quite a lot of Android news lately. Perhaps all the product announcements that were supposed to made on World Mobile Congress 2009 got stuck in the internet tubes.
Android is the hottest OS in town, because its free to the manufacture why pay thousands of dollars on a personalized OS people will just bitch about anyways. Or why pay MicroCrap thousands of dollars for a shitty OS and even more money if you want to support that OS. Open Source Rules and companies like MircoCrap will be running for the government going "we can't compete with this," just like Broadband companies are about not being able to keep up with usage. Cry me a flippin' river build me a bridge and get over it. Can't compete, die like everyone else. This IS a commerce base system, not a whiny based pissy feast.
Even better than free, I guess manufacturer get paid by google each time someone does search with google search on the same way Mozilla get a commission when you search using the integrated google on Firefox.
better than free, they get paid, Microsoft can not beat that.
Well, to be fair, it was Engadget that suggested it might be Android
For all we know, it may be linux..
Or WinCE
Or BeOs.
And Android is not Linux.
No, not at all.
ENGADGET!
I JUST COUNTED LIKE 5 ARTICLES ABOUT ANDROID ON THE FRONTPAGE!
I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS SINCE... Yesterday... When you were talking about Apple. =D
Seriously though, I'm loving the coverage right now.
Anyways, I'm excited about the push to use Android on netbooks. It only makes sense.
does that mean we are going to start to hear from people like look_around_you claiming Engadget bias?
Engadget is obviously trying to hide it's pro-Apple bias. Don't let it fool you. Or else...terrible things will happen.
ಠ_ಠ
they stole my idea
rather than try to cram a pc into a phone, cram the phone into a pc. pay me my royalties now.
Did you think of that before the Flybook?
how about a netbook without an OS. So I can put my own choice on it.
I'm one of those people that got a Windows XP netbook, just cause I had chance to get one to the specification I wanted, and promptly installed Linux on it.
Android on a netbook.. just doesn't sound like a good idea personally.
put a trackpoint on this hardware and I will buy them in bulk. And as mentioned above, put a no-cost OS on it because ultimately I'm going to put whatever I want on it - probably ubuntu.
I think puting Android on a netbook would be a big mistake i have a dell mini 9 refurb running windows xp does every thing I need and running AutoCAD Civil 3D. you can do that with Android. The amount of Ubuntu that has been return to dell is insaine. Just keep that shit on the phone!
I agree with you 100%
Betcha it can't run crysis!
I hate this. Android looks like it would be terrible on a netbook... Stick to phones, they actually fit Android very well.
cheap
I am actually hoping that they use that freescale ARM processor in this thing. Since they are intending on using a surpise OS (I'm personally hoping for the new ubuntu), they may as well make the netbook something truly unique and maybe it would end up having a ten hour battery life. The other important aspect which could make this stand out is if they can hit a price point of $250 or less.
H mm it really good that it launch in very cheap price.
