Dell injects WiMAX into trio of laptops
While making a point to assert it's looking into LTE as well, Dell has for now jumped on the WiMAX bandwagon by announcing it'll offer the technology as an option on its Studio 15, Studio 17, and Studio XPS 16 laptops. US customers can pick the Intel 5150 WiMAX / Wireless-N combo card for $60 under the wireless card tab when customizing. Right now, we'd wager a few people living in Portland, Atlanta, or pockets of Baltimore just got mighty happy.

5350 costs less than 30$ with delivery from eBay. And they want 60 just for the difference between crappy 5100 and 5150?
Unfortunately The Studio and Studio XPS line takes half-height MiniPCIe cards and no one is selling them on Ebay yet. You could get those full-height cards and put them any Dell from the E1505 up to the Vostro lineup. The current gen Studio, Studio XPS, Latitude, Precision, and Inspiron 9 13 14 15.
I live in Portland and whenever I walk past a clear store, the manager is always outside smoking or just begging people to come inside. Portland was the WRONG city for this. We already have free wifi provided by the city downtown, no one wants to pay for clear.
Funny. I got tired of the free wifi, and signed up for Clear. Walk into a World Cup and every sofa chair and more than half the seats are filled with people crawling on the free wifi. The City has no free wifi except at certain public buildings, and the rest are personal telco wifi hotspots, including the World Cup.
The problem with even MetroFi's wifi network, was that it was always TOO WEAK of a signal for most people to take advantage of it. They placed those antennas every 3 or 4 blocks apart, and even with a directional antenna, I couldn't get more than 20% signal, and I could never connect to their network even if I was standing outside, below the antenna on my PDA.
Yes, a trio.
People still buy pos computers from Dell.
I only buy laptops made of aircraft-grade unibody aluminum.
I was told that www.AtWimax.com is a great site to find service. I wont buy a Dell just to try that out though. I gave up on dell a long time ago.
unless is unlimited usage for torrent or gaming on the go then screw mobile broadband!
Update: Wanted to drop in and let you know I corrected my post. I should have said two Dell laptops instead of three. I should not have included the Studio 15. Here's the corrected post: http://bit.ly/CBBDv.
Thanks,

That's sad -- why not put WiMax in the model more people are likely
to be carrying around? :P
Bell Canada offers a WiMAX service branded under the name "Bell Internet Portable" and "Bell Internet Rural", Formerly "Sympatico Unplugged".
They claim to offer service in 124 Canadian cities. Plus this has been around for a while.
Canada is usually quite far behind when it comes to stuff like this, but your post sarcastically implied that WiMAX isn't available in enough places to make it worthwhile. I thought I might mention it.
