Nintendo moves 15 million Wii Fit units in a year, 4 remain in use
Oh c'mon, just admit it -- you rationalized that Wii Fit purchase like so: "Oh, I can't afford this, but it's totally something to make me exercise! So, I'll buy it!" Fast forward two months later, and you're struggling to find space to hide the case. All kidding aside (sort of...), you can't deny the facts, and the facts are that the Big N managed to ship 15 million Wii Fits units in just 13 months. For comparison, it took right around 2.5 years to move 50 million Wii units, so it seems this here title is well on its way to hitting the same milestone in around the same amount of time. Unfortunately, you can't lose weight by simply handing over wads of cash to Satoru Iwata -- feel free to try, though.

I am a G.A.E!!!
did he died?
you look more like bart simpson to me...
In case you don't know zfurie is making a reference to this http://u.nu/2k39
wii fit does not look cool unnless you are a middle-aged mother who wants to lose a couple pounds...
HERE COMES WIIFIT PLUS TO SAVE THE DAY!
remember that half naked chick on google video? she did not look middle age to me
My wife resembles that remark...but will kill me if she sees this post.
Hey,
And the Wii is the most used console of adults over 30.
Even my grandparents use Wii Fit and play some of the Wii Sports.
i play my wii maybe once every other month. but i play by 360 on a weekly basis. i fell into the hype but it just ended up being a gimmicky toy and today's keynote proved that. i should have used the money to buy a blu-ray player or something.
Fascinating. Tell me more.
Isn't that the same family doing the 360 project natal?
This is Microsoft.
Do you really expect them to do something original?
@ gouken85
Wait...don't you mean Apple?

I don't know about the rest of you... but after 6 months of use, I can shift my weight like a pro... Now if construction companies started installing stairs that were only 2 inches in height I'd be in business!
Not to dispute the harsh reality of the wii fit (mine gets used about once a month), but I did see real 3 inch step risers for the balance board at best buy yesterday. They were branded "everlast", and cost about $24. It would turn it into a real exercise step.
Stop trolling engadget!!!
We all know you are an Xbox360 fanboy.
Woah, all of engadget is a single fanboy. Of course, all the editors fit together to form one mighty fighting robot. Nilay Patel is the head.
I would've assumed he was some other part. You know, "lower".
"all the editors fit together to form one mighty fighting robot"
First thought that came to my mind:
"Go go Fanboy Rangers!! Mighty Bloggin' Fanboy Rangers!!!"
Well... I like the pink shorts
15 million idiots...
Yeah, 15 million idiots that both Microsoft and Sony are willing to have on their side.
I challenge you to try Shaun White Snowboarding for the Wii using the balance board. If you aren't sweating profusely after 30 minutes, I'd give you a medal.
This argument is bs considering the same "active gameplay" ideas were propose by both Microsoft and Sony at E3.
Nintendo are just using the same model as their opponents but more effectively.
Oddly enough, WiiFit is the only thing I use my Wii for now. Well that and the occasional Super Mario Galaxy. I've been on the Subway diet lately and find that the WiiFit has been good for me to track my weight loss with. That and I find that the freestyle step is a great motivation to make use of it if I'm reading or watching a movie. That way I can get in a good 30-60 mins around three times a week.
It's not flawless, but hey, if it takes that $80 to get me working out then it's worth it to me.
+1
I'm down 35 pounds thanks to wii fit. You won't grab that extra slice of pizza if you know you will see the half pound it adds the next day. I never do the exercises on it, but it's the first thing I do in the morning. If you want real exercise you have to look elsewhere though.
If you're watching a movie how do you use the WiiFit?
Go outside and play a real sport, go jogging, ride a bike, join a gym, all of those are going to make you lose more weight than playing wii fit.
Oghowie - I start up the 30 minute free step and just change channels to my movie. I've also played the 360 while doing the stepping...that was confusing but still got me moving.
James - I am going outside. I'm walking 2 miles roundtrip each day to a Subway. I am currently working full time, in Grad School, own my own business and have a wife - I don't typically have time to work out much more during the day. That's where the Wii Fit helps me - I can get some exercise later at night while still winding down for the night. I've lost quite a bit of weight while doing it so it's worked well for me.
James: I've dropped 75 lbs in just under a year. No, it hasn't all been with the Wii Fit -- I've taken to biking to work, for one thing -- but it was the kick I needed to get started and it remains the tool I use to track my progress (though EA Sports Active is now pushing things to another level). So don't be such a smug, condescending jackass about it. Some of us have actual experience to support our claims, rather than unfounded opinions.
Pssshh! I have you all beat. I've lost a whopping 150lbs. using this breakthrough product called CRACK!! Heck, it's even endorsed by Whitney Houston!
In these trying economic times i'd look for inexpensive ways to entertain my family, like sneaking up behind my long-haired son in the middle of Wii Soccer and hoofing him into the television.
you sound like a great dad
Your username is definitely appropriate for that comment. That is a pretty funny idea though.
Here come the Microsoft fanboys! Pre-emptive strike:
Microsoft moves 15 million Xbox 360 units in a year, 10 million go RROD.
and microsoft fixes them for free!!!
I never thought I'd hear "Microsoft" and "fanboys" in the same sentence. That's like hearing "Linux" and "going out on a date" in the same sentence.
"I never thought I'd hear "Microsoft" and "fanboys" in the same sentence."
Have you been reading the Engadget comments section the past 6 months? THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!
Try saying something bad about Microsoft and see what happens. :)
get some socks on!
I like how the writer pusses out and assumes everyone else has too.
Didn't you read the instructions?
"NOT SUITABLE FOR CONEHEADS"
"Unfortunately, you can't lose weight by simply handing over wads of cash to Satoru Iwata -- feel free to try, though."
Well, you can if that is your grocery money.
I don't know about you guys, but I want to punch every person in that photo in the face. Especially the boy. They are so artificially happy it makes me sick.
The mother doesn't look too happy. Perhaps she's thinking to herself that she should have stayed a lesbian.
Yep, I know what you mean.
I do about 2 hours a week on my Wii Fit, in fact I even bought my ex one because she never has time to hit the gym anymore because of the kids running around.
And before anyone say "go to the gym or work out" I spend about 3 hours a week in the gym and I play soccer but thanks to the Wii Fit showing your weight daily it helps keep you focused.
The Wii Fit is an original and great idea, that's why Sony, Microsoft, and EA are entering the market as well, funny that the people that are flaming this game the most are more than likely the ones who could use getting off their asses and playing a real sport the most.
So if I read your comment correctly -- and some of the others above -- people are using this mainly as a set of bathroom scales, but with the advantage of data logging built in.
I can see it ... but it still seems weird.
No I use the free step, rhythm boxing, and yoga.
The scale is a good addition and keeps you focused on what you are doing. I don't *need* the Wii Fit at all, I have been going to the gym for years but it's just a nice addition to the workout I currently do.
There are those that do see it as a way to drop some pounds without having to feel embarrassed by going to a gym, I can relate. At one point I was nearly 300 pounds and felt like I would stick out like a sore thumb at the gym. Those people will receive a great morale boost from Wii Fit but I do agree in no way would it ever replace a real workout or a personal trainer.
No one on this site or anywhere should be throwing insults at the people who see Wii Fit as a blessing, for them it is a chance to help themselves without assholes laughing at them or snickering.
Until you walk in their shoes you don't know how they feel.
I don't like the Wii Fit software, but love the balance board, primarily for snowboarding and skating games. They are actually pretty good core exercise and you don't know you're working. I've lost about 10 lbs not really doing anything else different but playing these games about 5 hours per week. I still walk about a mile a day with my dog and family and do the bowflex about 3 times per week, as I did before Wii balance board. But I can honestly attribute 10 lbs weight loss in 3 months to virtual boarding alone... and that's well worth a hundred bucks or so.
That's exactly what's happened with my Wii Fit board. I asked for it for my birthday from my husband thinking having it would motivate me to use it for exercise. Unfortunately, I got completely bored of the Wii Fit activities. And I'll probably do it all over about with the new wii fit "game"
Get Shaun White Snowboarding. You'll work harder than the Wii fit without even realizing it and won't get bored. They should bundle it with boarding games rather than Wii fit.
Hmm... it sounds like the Wii Fit hasn't worked for Murph.
I traded my wii and wii fit for a 16gb Iphone 3g. Best decision ever. Now only my wrist gets an exercise.
Going from a wii to an iphone; seems your wrist would have had generous amounts of exercise already.
There's a word for special people like you atomicmatt...
...wrist hurting...
wanker
I did try someone's and my KNEES hurt after 30 minutes. For that amount of pain, you should actually burn real calories.
Maybe calories isn't the real issue at hand?
Watching porn on the iPhone gives his wrists a better workout than a 30 minute Mario Galaxy session.
You can lose wait with EA sports active. No BB required.
i meant weight dayumm
The notion training is something done to loose weight is an American idea.
Or.. you could RUN outside...for FREE.
Do you realize for about 30% of the year It's below freezing and icy and dark at 5 pm for 3-4 months of the year for quite a few people, and for some people it may not be safe to run outside when they get home from work? And some people may have problems that prevent them from running but can do low impact isometrics and would like to have fun doing it?
First, Alpha is exactly right. I live in Minnesota, so for at least 4 months out of the year, running outside is difficult without a lot of extra gear, and there is a huge risk of injury from slipping on ice or getting hit by a car because it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get back home.
Second, running outside is far from free. I run about 25 miles a week, and if you keep that up year round, you have to replace your shoes at least 3 times a year for at least $100/pair.
I still run too, but I also use the WiiFit a couple times a week for light strength training and yoga for flexibility. Just because the author of this post is a quitter doesn't mean everyone is.
This publishing is so unbelievably true. I just have to llok at my sister and her husband (both in their thirties) who bought it with the expectations that it would be a way to train and keep fit with their heavy work lives.....sadly it was used the first day or two and now collects dust behind the tv. What a waste.
I've had Wii Fit since Christmas. I try to do an hour a day on the Wii Fit. I just watch less TV. Sometimes life gets in the way of working out,, but I've lost over 40 lbs, I'm in much better shape too. When I started I couldn't do the 6 push-ups and side planks without putting my knees on the floor. Now I do 20 correctly. I am looking forward to the new Wii fit software coming out in the fall.
If WiiFit is not actually getting used by most people who have it, then you can be sure that WiiFit Plus will be a failure. How could Nintendo make such a boneheaded mistake as to make a sequel to such a dismal failure of a concept? Oh, wait, I do use Wii Fit. It is a good way for *me* to get some exercise. It does help to motivate *me*.
I couldn't stick with a gym membership (too boring and *way* more expensive then WiiFit) and I've tried doing other activities like biking, but I can't stick with those as exercise (I enjoy biking when it is for fun, or to actually get somewhere, but when I try to do it as exercise I can't get myself motivated to do it). Why can't you just get over it already and actually play your 360's instead of spending so much time whining about the success of stuff like this?
i use mine every day.....probably only missed 10 days in the last 376! i guess i'm one of the 4 that is still in use!
Actually, you can lose weight with the Wii Fit.
When I first got Wii Fit, I lost 5-7 lbs. But, like many other fitness situations, I stopped. Recently, I started up my fitness regimen again. I was walking for 3 weeks and got stuck at a certain weight. Fired up the Wii Fit again, and the pounds started coming off again.
The link you posted was about Wii Sports, not Wii Fit. But with Wii Sports, you don't have to do much to play those games. You can, but you don't have to. So it depends on how the study was conducted.
I didn't even notice that the "you can't lose weight" article was for Wii Sports until you mentioned it. What lazy and dishonest reporting by Engadget! I also have lost weight using the WiiFit. When I first got it last fall, I used it for about an hour at least 4 times a week and lost 15 pounds within a couple months. I've since lost 15 more (although much of that has been since I started running regularly again), but I still use the WiiFit a couple times a week, and I weigh myself with it every day.
My guess is the article's author and most of the other people badmouthing the WiiFit wouldn't be successful at ANY exercise program, because they would quit after a couple weeks because they aren't seeing any results. Lack of motivation overall doesn't mean the WiiFit is a failure... it means YOU ARE!
James: I've lost around 25 pounds over the last three months using only a combination of Wii Fit and the LoseIt application on my iPhone. I'm not a hardcore calorie counter, but simply getting *some* exercise and being more aware of my eating habits has made a big difference. The main thing slowing me down right now is my travel schedule - I'm typically on the road about half of each month.
I loathe going to a gym and consistently find a way to avoid it - it's boring and takes a relatively large amount of what leisure time I have, but my trusty Wii Fit is convenient, quick, and actually makes me feel good about exercising with some really simple but effective changes. Instead of desperately trying to keep up with some 23 year old vegan hardbody in a step class, I'm performing a routine in front of a lot of people who are clapping for me. A cheap mental trick, perhaps, but it works. As geek-sad as it sounds, it makes me feel a little better when jogging in place to have the Miis of my friends and family waving, running with me, and giving encouragement. No, I don't require these things, but it does put your through process in a slightly different place. It's a nice distraction.
I've developed a rotation of yoga, aerobics, and strength and do the balance exercises every day. I am a master Super Hula Hooper. My core strength has improved, I don't huff up the stairs any more, and I actually look forward to doing something fun instead of "sacrificing my time." It's also a huge mental boost to see daily progress as well as a motivator when the line goes in the wrong direction after the delicious steak I had at the bar last night.
If you prefer running or biking or weight lifting, then that's great. I really wish I did, but I don't. They're all boring and not enjoyable to me. I like gaming and taking 30 to 45 minutes to jump around like an idiot in the privacy of my own home is better than just tacking on an extra 45 minutes of GTA4 on the Xbox.
