Nintendo moves 15 million Wii Fit units in a year, 4 remain in use
Oh c'mon, just admit it -- you rationalized that Wii Fit purchase like so: "Oh, I can't afford this, but it's totally something to make me exercise! So, I'll buy it!" Fast forward two months later, and you're struggling to find space to hide the case. All kidding aside (sort of...), you can't deny the facts, and the facts are that the Big N managed to ship 15 million Wii Fits units in just 13 months. For comparison, it took right around 2.5 years to move 50 million Wii units, so it seems this here title is well on its way to hitting the same milestone in around the same amount of time. Unfortunately, you can't lose weight by simply handing over wads of cash to Satoru Iwata -- feel free to try, though.

That's exactly what's happened with my Wii Fit board. I asked for it for my birthday from my husband thinking having it would motivate me to use it for exercise. Unfortunately, I got completely bored of the Wii Fit activities. And I'll probably do it all over about with the new wii fit "game"
Get Shaun White Snowboarding. You'll work harder than the Wii fit without even realizing it and won't get bored. They should bundle it with boarding games rather than Wii fit.
Hmm... it sounds like the Wii Fit hasn't worked for Murph.
I traded my wii and wii fit for a 16gb Iphone 3g. Best decision ever. Now only my wrist gets an exercise.
Going from a wii to an iphone; seems your wrist would have had generous amounts of exercise already.
There's a word for special people like you atomicmatt...
...wrist hurting...
wanker
I did try someone's and my KNEES hurt after 30 minutes. For that amount of pain, you should actually burn real calories.
Maybe calories isn't the real issue at hand?
Watching porn on the iPhone gives his wrists a better workout than a 30 minute Mario Galaxy session.
You can lose wait with EA sports active. No BB required.
i meant weight dayumm
The notion training is something done to loose weight is an American idea.
Or.. you could RUN outside...for FREE.
Do you realize for about 30% of the year It's below freezing and icy and dark at 5 pm for 3-4 months of the year for quite a few people, and for some people it may not be safe to run outside when they get home from work? And some people may have problems that prevent them from running but can do low impact isometrics and would like to have fun doing it?
First, Alpha is exactly right. I live in Minnesota, so for at least 4 months out of the year, running outside is difficult without a lot of extra gear, and there is a huge risk of injury from slipping on ice or getting hit by a car because it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get back home.
Second, running outside is far from free. I run about 25 miles a week, and if you keep that up year round, you have to replace your shoes at least 3 times a year for at least $100/pair.
I still run too, but I also use the WiiFit a couple times a week for light strength training and yoga for flexibility. Just because the author of this post is a quitter doesn't mean everyone is.
This publishing is so unbelievably true. I just have to llok at my sister and her husband (both in their thirties) who bought it with the expectations that it would be a way to train and keep fit with their heavy work lives.....sadly it was used the first day or two and now collects dust behind the tv. What a waste.
I've had Wii Fit since Christmas. I try to do an hour a day on the Wii Fit. I just watch less TV. Sometimes life gets in the way of working out,, but I've lost over 40 lbs, I'm in much better shape too. When I started I couldn't do the 6 push-ups and side planks without putting my knees on the floor. Now I do 20 correctly. I am looking forward to the new Wii fit software coming out in the fall.
If WiiFit is not actually getting used by most people who have it, then you can be sure that WiiFit Plus will be a failure. How could Nintendo make such a boneheaded mistake as to make a sequel to such a dismal failure of a concept? Oh, wait, I do use Wii Fit. It is a good way for *me* to get some exercise. It does help to motivate *me*.
I couldn't stick with a gym membership (too boring and *way* more expensive then WiiFit) and I've tried doing other activities like biking, but I can't stick with those as exercise (I enjoy biking when it is for fun, or to actually get somewhere, but when I try to do it as exercise I can't get myself motivated to do it). Why can't you just get over it already and actually play your 360's instead of spending so much time whining about the success of stuff like this?
i use mine every day.....probably only missed 10 days in the last 376! i guess i'm one of the 4 that is still in use!
Actually, you can lose weight with the Wii Fit.
When I first got Wii Fit, I lost 5-7 lbs. But, like many other fitness situations, I stopped. Recently, I started up my fitness regimen again. I was walking for 3 weeks and got stuck at a certain weight. Fired up the Wii Fit again, and the pounds started coming off again.
The link you posted was about Wii Sports, not Wii Fit. But with Wii Sports, you don't have to do much to play those games. You can, but you don't have to. So it depends on how the study was conducted.
I didn't even notice that the "you can't lose weight" article was for Wii Sports until you mentioned it. What lazy and dishonest reporting by Engadget! I also have lost weight using the WiiFit. When I first got it last fall, I used it for about an hour at least 4 times a week and lost 15 pounds within a couple months. I've since lost 15 more (although much of that has been since I started running regularly again), but I still use the WiiFit a couple times a week, and I weigh myself with it every day.
My guess is the article's author and most of the other people badmouthing the WiiFit wouldn't be successful at ANY exercise program, because they would quit after a couple weeks because they aren't seeing any results. Lack of motivation overall doesn't mean the WiiFit is a failure... it means YOU ARE!
James: I've lost around 25 pounds over the last three months using only a combination of Wii Fit and the LoseIt application on my iPhone. I'm not a hardcore calorie counter, but simply getting *some* exercise and being more aware of my eating habits has made a big difference. The main thing slowing me down right now is my travel schedule - I'm typically on the road about half of each month.
I loathe going to a gym and consistently find a way to avoid it - it's boring and takes a relatively large amount of what leisure time I have, but my trusty Wii Fit is convenient, quick, and actually makes me feel good about exercising with some really simple but effective changes. Instead of desperately trying to keep up with some 23 year old vegan hardbody in a step class, I'm performing a routine in front of a lot of people who are clapping for me. A cheap mental trick, perhaps, but it works. As geek-sad as it sounds, it makes me feel a little better when jogging in place to have the Miis of my friends and family waving, running with me, and giving encouragement. No, I don't require these things, but it does put your through process in a slightly different place. It's a nice distraction.
I've developed a rotation of yoga, aerobics, and strength and do the balance exercises every day. I am a master Super Hula Hooper. My core strength has improved, I don't huff up the stairs any more, and I actually look forward to doing something fun instead of "sacrificing my time." It's also a huge mental boost to see daily progress as well as a motivator when the line goes in the wrong direction after the delicious steak I had at the bar last night.
If you prefer running or biking or weight lifting, then that's great. I really wish I did, but I don't. They're all boring and not enjoyable to me. I like gaming and taking 30 to 45 minutes to jump around like an idiot in the privacy of my own home is better than just tacking on an extra 45 minutes of GTA4 on the Xbox.
