an iphone 3g running 3.0 with a case on it.. mine looks the EXACT same.. lol

I bet the radio/base band chip is improved (less drop calls/better battery life). In addition to all of the other anticipated minor tweaks and upgrades. Hum! This might be my very first iPhone. 3rd time is always a charm...
PS Also looking forward to the much rumored "lower at&t iPhone rates". We shall see in 2 days...

actually one of my cases does, found it on ebay from hong kong, no joke but its blue so it doesnt resemble this..
You forget that the silver bezel is gone, and the earpiece has been moved up to the top border of the device...
But yes, it looks stunningly similar to an iPhone 3G with a case.

All i am saying is that there better be a flash. All we are getting is a measly 3.2 megapixel camera - nothing in this day and age, so the least Apple can do is give us friggin flash!!!!!

I wouldn't worry about a flash - unless it's a Xenon flash it's not going to make a lot of difference in poor lighting.
So, this looks like... a minor revamp of the iPhone 3G. Awesome.
Is anyone with a 3G actually going to break their contract to buy this? I mean, since you can get OS 3.0 anyway, why bother?

i believe you when you say that you have a case that looks like the texture of this photo's iphone but im sure the case isnt paper thin or it wouldn't be much of a case. so IF that was a case on that photo's iphone, it would have to be noticeably thick, atleast thick enough to realize thats a case (specially where the camera is). still case or no case, Gabe has a point, the earpeice and chrome is noticably different/gone. personally, i belive that that is a picture of the new iphone. i dont think it would be nessesary to switch from my iphone 3g to this one (unless there is a HUGE deal-breaking detail about the new one that i missed). it doesn't seem that different hardware wise.
How can you say your iPhone 3G looks like this one? Look at the placement of the speaker on the front of the phone. It's way higher than where mine is...though, maybe your iPhone is different than the millions of other ones out there. Or maybe you have a magical case.

Is the design/size/shape of the iPhone 3G really that awful that everyone was expecting and is disappointed by the new phone possibly looking very very similar? I like how my iPhone 3G looks and feels so I'm not really hoping for some huge revision. The improvements to this phone are going to be the added/updated INTERNAL hardware. The new camera, magnetometer, beefier processor, more RAM, more storage space, front facing camera... All those things can be improved without changing the appearance of the phone very much and make a MUCH larger impact on the actual usage experience. The software can be gotten on an iPhone 3G, so if you don't care about any of those improvements above, you don't really have any reason to upgrade. I, personally, care a lot about most of those improvements above and intend on adding another 2 years to my contract in another month or so.
P.S. I really hope Apple is going to surprise with the apple doubling as a flash.. It would coincide with the rumors that the apple lights up since I can't imagine any other reason for it to. I just don't think Apple would want one of those shitty LED based 'lights' as a substitute as a flash, so unless they're going to shock us with some revolutionary low powered flash, we might be SOL on that one. *fingers crossed*

It's fake. Because the date on the iPhone says 19th but today is the 6th. Real iPhone pictures would display correct date.

Funny how the apple fanboys give every excuse in the book to support ScrApple.... they just come up with oh this is going to be better and this is going to be this and that... bunch of iDiots! If they would at least recognize the goods of it's competitor(Palm, MS) it wouldn't be so bad but not even that they can admit.
it looks like the same old iphone too me. its not much of a change. until i see a new fresh, sexier, and unique iphone i think i will stick with buying a pre. by the way i went to a sprint store to pick one, but they ran out, so i checked out one of the model ones and when i felt it it didn't feel cheap at all. i liked it, it was nice.

Once Apple reached "big glass screen" there's nowhere else it can go.
Other phones are turning into a big touchscreen covering the entire face of the phone. Other than adding keys like a Blackberry or Treo... or becoming a slider... the iPhone will probably be a big glass screen for quite some time.
Thank you bud for low ranking my comment. I recently purchased a candy blue iPhone case on eBay and it did in fact, have that info on it. Now i know those numbers about the model were probably fake, but it still has numbers and looks legit, it even has the 16GB in a rounded rectangle. Bud, I know what im talking about, dont talk this trash unless you have been inside of my residence and physically held and examined the case for yourself. That's all I have to say, but thanks very much for the people that agree with me that this is just as fake as the rest of the leaked pictures on the net :)
Does it really matter that much what hardware upgrades it has? Flash, no flash. Measly 3.2MP camera compared to Sony's or Nokia's 8.2MP cameras. Any sensible person that hears about it will want one or maybe two iPhones and Apple will sell millions of these puppies within a month. What's really important is that it's made by Apple and the other smartphones are not. It's already an instant hit and it hasn't even been announced yet. Now it's all about the apps and games, tomorrow it'll be about the video recording and video chat or even the simplistic compass function. (The person who said nobody needs video chat knows nothing about what people actually find a need for once it's available. The exact same thing was said about the iPod from people who had little forward vision). I'm sure even Nintendo users will get more use out of their dual camera DSi than Nokia did.
Sure, as you Engadget tech-heads are always saying, it's all been done before by every two-bit handset maker in the world. It's just that Apple is going to make billions of dollars from it and get the recognition of getting those features to be meaningful for the non-tech user. Nokia will be whining about having a VC camera for years and then scratch their heads when asked about who actually uses it.
The iPhone wins and with maybe the exception of the BlackBerry having corporate ties, every other company loses. This is a given, people. Watch closely because it will unfold right before your eyes starting on Monday.

ummm... maybe it is not possible in the US? All I have to do is dial a video call and it just works! Just as simple as selecting a contact and calling.
Or for web chats or using it has a bluetooth webcam.
I have it on good authority (my rear end) that the new iPhone will be completely covered by touchscreens on all sides, allowing for apples new 3d multitouch system.
I'm just waiting for them to say nothing about the new Iphone at WWDC.

There were pictures up on another AOL blog site of the "new Iphone" and the ear piece was in the same spot... However, the headphone jack was on the bottom of the phone, not the top.
Why would Apple do away with the chrome bezel? Sure, it may get banged up easily over time, but that's what made the iPhone 3G look nice.
Even the buttons are black now! What's up with that?! It looks kinda cheap looks-wise.
Why do people keep pining for a flash, as if that's some kind of iPhone dealbreaker? Is there a single phone with a flash that can *actually illuminate a subject* beyond like 12 inches? Even the flash on my compact Kodak camera is worthless.
@iphonerulez: Actually, what you're saying is pretty spot-on. Apple is hardly ever the first to do anything...but because they act like they're the first, and because they're Apple, they're the ones who people flock to. Doesn't matter if the product is better or worse than the competitors because the masses don't know and the masses don't care.
Once you're viewed as the de facto default, it will take either a major screw up or a hell of a competing product to effect some change.

The biggest drawback of the new iPhone is that it will put the smaller handset companies out of business. I guess sacrifices have to be made when one device leaps far ahead of the others. Looks like HTC is doomed for sure. Sony Ericsson isn't doing too well either and a low-cost iPhone could be the death blow.

Doesn't seem a very popular saying at Apple though, considering what they have done with the iPods and the Nanos.
I wasn't implying that it's a bad thing that they haven't changed much, but I think that a lot of people are expecting something different from Apple in the way of aesthetics this year, especially considering the pressure that they are facing from Palm.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. *ONLY* if the built-in iPod App allows one to completely *flip* the screen so I can place my phone in a cup holder, then I can see this working. But for those without docks, as far as I know, the iPod app won't let you view your song selection upside down which is stupid.

sadly it seems pretty lame to be a fake making me think its real. hope its fake tho cause i think it does look better with the chrome (yea i know thats definitely gone) but headphone jack on the bottom! not looking forward to that. Its gotta be on the inside where the fireworks are and there has to be something like multiple versions and/or more flexible pricing from AT&T to follow. If not, 3.0 steals the show and no one really cares about the new model (if they already have an iPhone anyway)

"Almost every other phone" does video chat? Really? I'm guessing you are not in the U.S., because phones that do actual video chat (not take videos) are almost non-existent here.
As far as the design goes, I hope they keep the old form factor. I have a ton of cases and a JuicePack Air that I would hate to see not fit...

Clearly, It's called Iphone Video because of the video chat. 3.0 was going to allow video even on the old cameras so I don't think it's exclusive to that back side camera.

Video chat would be nice, but most people don't have a real need for it. That being said, if Apple does indeed have it then we'll never hear the end of it from the fanbois.
Also, I read before that in the U.S. the carriers can't handle voice and data at the same time, so video chat isn't possible. And if it were possible, AT&T would be the worst network to implement it on (or Verizon, both of their 3G networks are unstable as hell).
When Sprint gets their 4G network up and running in all the big cities, video chat might start to look interesting. Until then, meh.
But if it has video chat att will only allow you to use it with wifi not over 3g. Their 3g network is so weak and overpriced
How? Through Skype or a similar app? You can't make network calls over WiFi.
It had better, because it would only ever matter if every single person you know owns this exact phone. I know I'm not receiving any video calls on my G1.
I supposed you could do a video "chat" over WiFi, much like the video option on gtalk, msn, and iChat. It wouldn't be near as useful as actual video calling. In fact it could be argued about it's usefulness period on a phone. I'm sure Apple will be able to sell it no matter what it ends up being whether it's useful or not.
What is it with spy spots and terrible picture quality? Apparently, to be a spy, you need to have a camera from 1992.
Well I doubt you'd want to whip out a, say, Canon 1D and a L lens wherever this was taken, which might have been a factory.

I have an old Zenit camera from 1980's that takes pictures 10 times the quality of that.
Any film camera from 1992--which is what you'd have--would take better photos.

An active matrix OLED screen is instantly recognizable due to black colored pixels shutting off. This is not an OLED.
Its funny how engadget, whenever they get hold of a leaked photo, they always say something to this effect:
"Well this could very well be the new (gadget name here), but then again, its not too hard to photoshop one of these, so we can't guarantee that this is the real thing."

To be honest it seems pretty likely that these pictures were leaked by Apple themselves. It's good day to remind folks the a new iPhone is gonna be coming.
...It's because everyone is so afraid of being duped, like everyone is going to laugh at them. That's why you see so many people always saying "'shopped" or "fake" as though it really matters. It's safer to be wrong calling it a 'chop because no one remembers and points out that you called the real thing fake, but people do seem to dredge up when you call the fake one real...
For the record, I'd say I'm a little skeptical this is real. It could be, and all rumors, photos, and leaked parts converge add up to this very object, but it seems to be missing the headphone jack on the bottom like that other leak, and something I believe will be a new design trait of the new iPhone, as I think they've moved the speaker to the the top with the video cam, and moved the headphone jack to the bottom where the speaker used to be. (Just speculation, of course! Not claiming fact... I don't mind being wrong on these things!)
Also, I can't figure out why NOT ONE of these people will show a front-mounted camera in operation other than two possibilites:
1. There IS NO front-facing camera.
2. The OS is not final and does not support it yet, so there's no way to 'show' the front-facing camera.
We will see in less than 36 hours if this is true!
Not really been keeping up with the rumour mill, but why the Hell would you get rid of the silver chrome lining? It's what gives the iPhone that 'luxurious' look, like wood pannelling in a Mercedes. Say it ain't so...
I kinda think the bezel was changed to make it really distinguishable from the iPod Touch. The 2nd gen has the same chrome bezel, so it looks damn near identical from the front. That's my guess anyways.

I don't know if you've noticed, but almost all phones have adapted the chrome lining, even my old crappy LG Venus. By getting rid of it, they're actually distancing themselves from the now overused design.

Not everyone sees the old-fashioned bling as luxurious. I would prefer aluminum or a nice high quality plastic to chrome or faux wood or any of that crap. I'm actually glad the bling is gone. I never liked it really. If something's metal, I prefer a matte/brushed finish to a shiny reflective one. Lots of people share this modern taste. This will likely be my (and maybe my wife as well) first iPhone, as our Verizon contract expires this month.
its pretty telling that we can't differentiate between a current gen iphone with a case on it and a next gen iphone. apple has a really good marketing engine to make so many people care about tiny and largely insignificant differences between generations.
and before you fanboys get your tampon fuse lit, relax. i had a first gen iphone within days of release. but remember, that was brand new product light years ahead of the competition.
I'm not a big fan of the chrome so if it's gone then I'm happy. I think this is fake but we'll just have to wait until Monday to find out.
