Lenovo's ThinkPad T400s in the wild, still waiting on an official debut
Lenovo is apparently slimming down its T400 series ThinkPads, with the new T400s being caught in the wilds of technologyland. Despite looking nearly a century old in these hands-on shots, the laptop seems to be pretty modern under the hood, with SSD, DisplayPort, eSATA, WWAN, a 14.1-inch WXGA+ LED backlit display, 5-in-1 multicard reader... the list goes on. It's all packed in at around 0.83-inches thick (including a built-in disc drive), and under four pounds, which makes Apple sound a little silly for crowing about packing a little SD card slot into its latest unibody lineup. Word is that the build quality hasn't been traded in for the slimness, and while there's no word on price, hopefully it won't be too much more than the T400, which currently starts out at $750.

Folks,
I wonder if Lenovo is still working some "not so ordinary" models...

i currently have the thinkpad x200 and it is the best laptop i have ever used.
as ugly as always. until lenovo fixes the placement of the control key, I will never use another one again. they're the only ones who've switched the placement of function and control.
Apple does it too actually.
And I think when a Thinkpad and a Macbook have something in common... it's a pretty good thing to have.
I have a T43 as my work laptop, back when IBM used to make them. I love it in every aspect minus it hurts my eyes to look at the screen nowadays and it's really slow.
Thankpad is a design study that works.. and does it with class. I've had more than 11 ThinkPads over the years.. I have no intention of ever moving to a different brand.
I loved the specs on this model, only the lack of discrete graphics is keeping me from jumping on board. Maybe a T400p is next?
It's supposed to be out on June 23
Jason, where did you get the June 23 release date?
The res probably still sucks. I hope they have WSXGA+ on 14" but I doubt it.
It's 14.1 WXGA+
This looks like the rumored X400 that was supposed to come out last summer with the the new thinkpads. It shares a lot of similar characteristics with the X300 series. If this is the rumored X400, then we can expect a T500s as the X500 was rumored to come out with it.
I love my T40. It has been with me for over 6 years! And it is rock solid and performed so well. I have been trying to replace my ThinkPad considering the CPU is over six years old. Some of HD video is too CPU intensive. Everytime when I tried some other brand, it just couldn't match the things that I could get from ThinkPad. I don't know about other people, one of the unique feature that seems only come from ThinkPad is to allow the LCD screen turn flat. It has to do with how the hinge is designed. It is so convenient to flip the LCD flat when you have to share the screen info when people are standing around the laptop. Try on any other brand Laptop, the most you can push the LCD backward is about 135 deg from the keyboard. Another one is the eraserhead pointer. Once you are used to this pointing device, it is the most efficient mouse device. You can switch from moving mouse to typing almost instant. Of course, keyboard is absolute the best on ThinkPad.
T-400....lets see next model, T-600 T-800, T-1000.....rise of the machines. From China? Skynet in Chinese? Tianwang....dui bu dui?
The first character "T" indicates the series, the second indicates the screen size (4=14 inch), the third and fourth indicate the generation. For example, Lenovo replaced the X300 with an X301. The next 14 inch T series will probably be T401.
NOOOO! My thinkpad t400 will arrive at my house tomorrow! darn! i should've waited...Then again i really need it now.
Niiiiiiiice...This is what i call i computer- Timeless design with a touch of modernism. Im already looking forward for the spec.
The only thing i miss with lenovo computers is backlight for the keyboard.
guys.. please.. thinkpad's quality is getting worse and worse ever since lenovo took it over from ibm. i''ve owned 2 thinkpads before it was taken over. earlier this year, i bought another thinkpad. I can really tell the difference when you actually touch it and i returned it right away.
i was told from insiders that lenovo stopped paying the japanese lab for designing and outsourced it to some cheap teams. you can notice the design has changed dramatically (eg: just look at where they put the fans)
if you think i'm bs, just answer one simple question, do you believe lenovo can make thinkpad with half cost as before w/o sacrificing any quality??
I have a 600x (IBM), T42 (IBM), and x200 (Len). The materials on the T42 felt nice but it had really bad flexing in the chassis and bits of plastic near the CD drive fell off due to flexing of the chassis only after a few months. There was also the problem of the Ati card separating from the mobo. This machine has the worst build quality of all three. The x200 and 600x are equally solid. I prefer the rubberized finish on the 600x but they both feel like bricks.
So I have to disagree, my Lenovo machine feels tougher than a late-model IBM and similar to the older Thinkpads.
Thinkpads is a mans best friend. Remember my first 750c i loved it, nad so I love my old timer T41 which i am using now, I liked the HP nx6110, fast machine, but it was so heavy and the battery died out after 6 months.
RELEASE PERIOD CONFIRMED!

Hi All, i got to see one of these at the product center in morrisville, and it looks amazing.. every single thing that i felt lenovo had started doing bad since taking over has been fixed on this model..
the screen is now centered, none of those ridges around the bezel, bigger touchpad for those who use it, took away a bunch of the extra indicator lights from 9 total to now only 5, most of the stickers are now hidden under the battery, ram is under the machine instead of under the plam rest.
the only down fall no discete, and this one might get a few people mad; it will need a different dock then the rest of the models.
Cool changes that might go unnoticed, power button lights up, there is a mute mic button for skype, volume keys are now joint, fingerprint has a green/red indicator on it to show if approved or rejected, battery is located in the back bottom like X300, cd drive still hot swap but eject located under the machine now
