MSI's seductive X-Slim lineup first
dropped jaws back at CeBIT, and it's been tempting PC addicts ever since
hitting the market a few months back. Many have argued that the X-Slim family looks just a bit too much like that
other ultraslim lappie over there, but we'd say these are distinct enough to walk their own path. Catering to a wide range of potential customers, MSI has actually issued quite a few of these machines, from the
X320 to the
X340 to the
X600. If you've been fortunate enough to pick one of these up for yourself, how has the user experience been? Is it as much a looker in person as you thought it'd be? Are you satisfied with performance? Anything missing for the price? Go on and get heard, won't you?
ADD A CD DRIVE !
Make sure idiots like him don't use it.
DVD drive and lower price.
Dual quad-cores, Blu-ray, dual SLI dedicated graphics, 4TB RAID array, 32GB RAM, 1080p monitor, and a bit slimmer.
@LondonConsultant: i can't decide if you're joking or not.
@m,
I can't figure out if you're autistic or drunk.
Shrink it to netbook size and make it cheaper than EEE Seashells.
The company who makes it.
They need a better marketing team.
I wonder if they even have one.
I agree. Before we try to improve it, we should have first heard about it's existence. Really, this is the first time I heard about the X-Slim.
i second that... i just found out that the x-slim existed just now
I've heard of it twice! BURN!
I'd have it come with an apology to Apple etched on the case for stealing their idea and making a crappy copy.
agreed
Honestly you don't read Engadget enough if you've never of these. But I know normal consumers don't read Engadget.
put a nvida ion in it and a larger touchpad, and better keyboard and bigger battery
Wow. You're geting high ranked?
Your suggestions are ridiculous. I'm surprised you didn't include 'make it cheaper'!
You only have to say "ion" to get high ranked.
ion
A better processor than the Atom couldn't hurt either.
@chispito: The X340 has a Core2Solo.
@FieryFurnace
The x340 model costs $780 on newegg, $200 more than the x320 which only has an atom z530.
More tape.
MOAR DOTS!
slap an apple sticker logo on the backscreen!
Then replace the VGA port with a proprietary port that requires you to pay 30 bucks for an adapter!
The MBA already comes with VGA & DVI adapters in the box.
Wow, and all it took was an $1800 purchase to get those! Great deal!
DisplayPort isn't proprietary. Apple didn't invent it or anything, they just so happen to prefer it. Personally I think DisplayPort blows, I'd take HDMI 1.4 any day all day. Dell also seems to think DisplayPort is a good idea, but hey, their notebooks also have HDMI so that to me is just fine. Choice is always better.
I think DisplayPort doesn't have licensing fees like HDMI that's why Apple, Dell, and a few other companies are supporting DisplayPort even though HDMI is pretty much compatible with all new TVs and a lot of new monitors
I love skimming through these 'How Would You Change' comments, looking for the greyed out one and seeing it has some reference to apple. Always makes me chuckle.
More cowbell.
If this guy doesn't get voted up, i've lost all hope for engadget.
Why? It wasn't funny at all, nor unexpected.
make it affordable
SECOND!
Was considering getting one until I found out that they go for $1000 here and thats only the X-320.
Anyone from the US or Canada want to throw one in your luggage on your next Australian trip, it won't take up much space :P
Raise the price by $100, but make the case out of aluminum. Super thin plastic cases don't work.
Take the innards of the X600 and throw it into the 13" X3x0 versions and I'd be very happy. Switch out that 500gb or 320gb internal for a 32gb SSD and I'll take it as a big bonus.
yes! exactly my mind! I would buy that if it stays below 1.3KG
ITS NOT THIN ENOUGH
Make it look less macbook air-ish and have something unique that I remember it by. No other complaints, pricing is good.
Hmm, showed up at this post expecting to find insight on the MSI's from somebody that ACTUALLY OWNS ONE- "If you've been fortunate enough to pick one of these up for yourself, how has the user experience been?". but alas, the same 'ol shit. Is there anyone out there who has this in their physical possession? The reason I ask is because not one time in the article does it state "How would you improve the MSI line?"
There oughta be laws.
Nope, none of the Engadget regulars own something like this. They just constantly bitch about how this or that doesn't add up to their (incredibly high, unarticulated, and overly ridiculous) needs. But, actually buy and use something that they constantly rag upon? Never.
I have an x340.
I HATE the keyboard, if I didn't only plan to use it one or two weekends a month on travel I would have sold it already.
The size and performance are perfect. The 2.5 hrs of battery life are fine.
The screen is nice.
But the keyboard sucks, I find touch typing hard on it cause the key distinction isn't so great. It also flex's a lot, hard to describe, but loud and feels very flimsy.
What's worse is the trackpad palm clicks all the time. I find it very hard to casually type on the thing, you have to constantly be aware of floating over the keyboard or you'll accidentally click while typing.
@ Jonathan Sundy
Thanks, was considering one for the wife, but will keep shopping for now. BTW, how's the CPU on it feel?, decent performance?
On trackpads, personally I can't stand 'em. I'm always hitting mine on my mini 9, and before I know it, I've typed three sentances in the preceding paragraph. fortunately, the synaptics software lets me disable it.
again, thanks.
VGA, really? drop a DVI or HDMI with audio support
They port was added with projectors in mind. Most projectors that you find in offices and classrooms still use VGA. If you want to use it for anything else, then they include adapters. Seems pretty logical to me.
I wouldn't, I'd just get an acer timeline 13 inch with the dual core, it's cheaper, more powerful, looonger battery, has a multitouch trackpad, and lookwise, the acer takes my pic. Btw I'm typing this on my msi gx600 which I like very much.
Removing the brand MSI?
Remove VGA port, replace with HDMI 1.3+
Lower price from 800USD to 500USD
Offer a Black model in stores instead of white
Really pretty simple changes with this particular unit.
Then, once the next model comes along, go ION for GFX subsystem, make battery user replaceable so we can have multiples on hand for long trips and at most increase the price 100 dollars to 600USD and they will sell a ton of them.
The choices manufacturer's make these days confound me more often than not when the obvious configurations and price points were staring them in the face from the beginning of concept. Seriously, why are we ALWAYS sitting around after the launch of new tech product asking *what would you change* about X or Y... get it right from dot!
They offer a black and a silver version, at least here in the US.
And the battery is user replaceable.
