European retailer hacks €100 from PlayStation 3 in run-up to gamescom
If you know anything about European retailer Fnac, you know it's not the go-to place for bargains. However, it's this very outlet that's now selling an 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle (which includes the console, a single controller and inFamous) for €100 less than its "everyday low price" as of yesterday. Of course, one major French retailer slashing the price on a system that's long overdue for a break isn't reason in and of itself reason to believe anything's on the horizon, but pair this up with everything else we've heard over the past few weeks, and we'd say all the vague omens are pointing to a leaner, cheaper and altogether more dashing PS3 on August 18th. In our magical fantasy land, anyway.
Update: Our friends at Engadget Spanish just let us know that there's been a price drop in Spain as well. Getting warmer...

This screams SLIM PS3!!!
bait and switch?
I CAN'T HEAR IT!
I didn't know people still bought PS3s
PORTUGAL!!!!
Bring me a Slim PS3 for $299 and make the existing 80GB units $249 until they're all sold; then we can talk...
That's insane talk. I actually think it's worth every penny of the current $399 pricetag. Maybe they can make it $299 if they charge those customer's $50/yr for PSN. That sounds about right.
Sorry Joker, but people HAVE been talking for the longest, just not you.
It's a portuguese retailer actually :)
Actually... No, it's not. Fnac is french but they have stores in other european countries, including Spain. Just because the page is in Portuguese doesn't mean it's a Portuguese country.
portuguese branch but still a french retailer
Actually Fnac is a French retailer that spread in nearby countries such as Portugal. Too bad this offer doesn't exist in France tho.
FNAC is a large French chain which is present in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and not only....
this particular store is Portuguese. They usually have some interesting articles but, as the author pointed out, they're not really known for bargains...
I think a ps3 is definatly on the cards
sorry! i'm absolutely certain i clicked on dAnixx's reply button. not sure what happened
@Enric, actually, is the Portuguese store, as who lives there can confirm it.
im sure you guys have seen a carrefour outside of france?
God i feel popular
Aww but I love my fatty PS3...
I love this site, visit everyday but your writing is getting stale already. Ok everybody is excited... Jesus.
I loved infamous.
Started playing last week. I haven't slept at all this week.
I can't wait to get a slim, my card is sitting right under my monitor ready to pre order. Although if it doesn't come I'll be disappointed, but at least the fanboi meltdown will be hella funny
This could be them trying to push the current inventory out the door to make way for the slim. I seem to remember Microsoft doing the same thing a few times as they released newer models of the 360. I don't expect this to last for long. If it does though, I think things will be looking up for Sony (and I may finally get a PS3).
God of War III for masses!
Actually I've spotted this exact thing on monday or so but at a different retailer, also in Portugal. First thing that got my attention when I passed by the store
yea I'd say its coming....But hell....what will the Slim be priced at?? hmmmm
I think they'll want to cash in on a new "premium" offering like they did with the PSP Go, so it's either a smaller pricce drop or no price drop at all
ummm I dont....the Slim is REPLACING the PS3s that are out now...they are NOT meant to be sold Side by side....the PSP-3000 and the PSP Go are meant to Co-exist....how will they do that if they are just $20 apart??
I doubt they'll keep the old one too, but I douubt they'll drop the price for the slim to the regular one's new price, I didn't mean they would be selling both... Unless one of them is dumbed down, which would be pretty bad for their business
Translation for americans: 299.99 EUR is approximately 426 USD, which is 140 USD less than "every day low price". (currency rates from xe.com)
I just came back from the supermarket (I live in spain) and saw this:

@niels
Wow, that's a bargain right there!!
The PS3 slim will obviously be priced at $299. The question is, what, if any, features will be stripped out of it?
What is strange it's only in Portugal and Spain that's @ 299€ (for Spain there's a discount for customers that have their card), in Italy there just one bundle @ 299€. France rien de rien and Fnac it's French. btw i think that the PS3 Slim will be tag @ 399€/399$ for Christmas if it comes out this year...
It has been for sale for a mere 15 dollars more in Switzerland for the last year, so I don't understand what all the fuzz is about. .
Confirmed in italy as well - www.mediaworld.it
I saw this on another retailer in Portugal as well - W O R T E N
They must be trying to push out all remaining stock making way for the Slim.
At least I hope so!
