No surprise that the
Zune HD announcement has resulted in a flurry of iPod rumors, and there's a couple good ones going around today. Obviously the big news is a set of photos purporting to show a next-gen touch with a camera -- the sourcing and the backdrop in some of the pics make it feel like it's a publicity stunt, but the shots of the motherboard next to a current-gen touch's board seem convincing -- especially because of Apple's
recent propensity to leak this sort of thing. The other piece of news? CNET says that whatever
Apple does next month, the new
Cocktail "next-generation album cover" will be a part of it, at least according to "multiple music industry sources." That might link into the
major labels' CMX initiative, it might have something to do with
iTunes 9, it might be a fun little Tom Cruise movie, or it might be nothing at all -- but it sure seems like we're in for a hell of a September.
Update: As commenter Joseph pointed out, these look pretty fake when you zoom in Photoshop -- there's a distinct square of pixels around the lens. Nice publicity stunt, guys -- we'll totally start listening to your show now.
Update 2: After seeing some high res versions of these pics, we think we can safely rule out the JPG artifacting as the tell-tale sign that these are fake. You know what we
can't rule out? The really bad looking Photoshop work around the lens. Much clearer pic after the break. [Thanks for the pic, Manny]

I'm going with fake if for no other reason than the fact that if someone had a leak of something this huge would they really leak it to... Covino & Rich?? Of all the places to leak your coveted pics, you're going to decide on Maxim Radio rejects Covino & Rich??? Seriously???
Soooo, in conclusion, if this is in fact real, then whomever leaked it should be schooled on where to leak their material to.
it's lame to be an Apple fanboy, but it's also lame to be an MS fanboy.
it's lame not to be open minded.
Ah come on guys these photos are obviously fakes.
Here's a new one for you, check this one out. The new touch has not one, not two but three cameras AND no jpeg effects!!

With tongue firmly in my cheek there, I just wanted to demonstrate how easy it is to fake this stuff. By the way, how come this so-called prototype or whatever has so many scratches on it?
That pic reminds me of the three-eyed fish in the Simpsons
Here's video:

If it's a fake...it's a GOOD fake.
Obviously fake because for a new model, it sure has a hell of a lot of scratches on it.
it looks like to me that it is a broken prototype that might've been "thrown out" and recovered by someone

Video speaks for itself.
this is 100% real...whether you guys want to believe it or not

proof
i don't really care for the next iPod touch as much, as a camera isn't enough incentive to get it (i mean really, my phone already has one, what makes having a camera on everything make it justifiable to need the device anymore?). I was really hoping for GPS+FM+Camera+Microphone+Compass.

Ultimately there is one way to be sure one way or the other... to wait and see. We can all revisit this thread when it's officially confirmed or trashed and ridicule all of those (or us) who were oh so wrong.
but, isn't that trolling?
I love it when you guys are wrong. You see some artifacts from compression and everyone becomes a forensic scientist and calls the photo fake and posts long drawn out blogs about how fake the images are.
Just goes to show how little people really know around here. The only reason you guys are right 99% about leaks and fakes being photo shopped is because 99% of the leaks are fake. If you call every leak fake, and 99% of them are fake anyways, well hell, you look like you know what you're talking about.
The video is the substantial truth. No doubt about that. Good luck next time you photoshop "forensic scientists",
Wow, square-shaped areas with more detail being more heavily compressed than the surrounding area is evidence of fakery? Have you guys ever heard of a thing called a macroblock? How about quantisation? Discrete cosine transform?
You can clearly see ringing artifacts caused by heavy quantisation in every macroblock surrounding the lens. These macroblock edges coincide with the surrounding, relatively artifact-free, macroblocks. The square area of artifacts isn't even a square - it's a 5x4 rectangle of macroblocks with the top-right macroblock missing (not artifacty).
Not Fake but Not real either!
Look at the pics of the boards. the camera version has a red motherboard.
This means its a prototype and not necessarily what may see production. in-fact it could be a unused prototype of the present gen touch.
PS god people learn something about image manipulation before calling every image fake. The reason there are more jpeg artifacts around the lens is that its a more detailed part of the photo thats how jpeg works.
This is a shop, I can tell by etc. etc.
Know how I know this is fake? Well, quite easy: the pictures are still here. Apple would've killed it.
does apple actually take the time to kill this stuff? really?
I think that this pic is fake. I dont think that the ipod itself with a camera is fake, because it is most likely going to have one, but this specific picture, i think, is fake mostly because a new ipod like that won't have that many scratches on the back. It would actually look new, and the lens wouldnt be blured on the outer part of the lens.
