Samsung just debuted its new X Series line, a trio of fairly thin big brothers to the
new netbooks Samsung is also launching today. The X420 (14-inch), X520 (14.6-inch) and X120 (11.6-inch, pictured) all hover around 0.95-inches thick, and range from 3 ounces to 4.4 pounds in weight. Samsung is touting its new design language for the laptops, though at a glance it doesn't seem too special -- the scratch-resistant UV coating for the glossy finish is a nice touch, though. Under the hood we're a little short on details, but an unannounced dual-core Intel CULV processor makes an appearance somewhere in there. Otherwise there's the fairly standard WiFi, Bluetooth, card reader, and HDMI plug. Samsung claims some special mojo to squeeze 9 hours of battery out of its 6 cell batteries (in the X420 and X520, the X120 does 4 cell), with 6 hours of movie playback also claimed -- we'll believe it when we see it, but we
want to believe. Prices range from 699 to 899 Euro (about $1,000 to $1,286 US), and the line should ship this month in Europe and Asia.
3 ounces? now that's a thin-and-light
I'll say!
I hope it comes with a large helium balloon to offset the weight of the laptop.
Yeah, I'll take the 3oz one please!
Pretty good-looking.. at least from the back. Though I'm not willing to pay that much for the smaller one, and the bigger one has lots of competition...
Hate Samsung Industrial design.
Never done anything for me and I can't think of a single product of there's that I like the look of.
Doesn't seem particularly thin...
Or light at 4.4 lbs... that's 13 inch MBP territory.
Did this comment work?
Don't know,did it?
I don't get the point of really lightweight laptops. I'd rather have something with real power I don't care if it weighs 6lbs.
You try carrying around a 6lbs laptop regularly.
I really don't get laptops at all.
Why carry around a 3oz portable machine when you can carry around a petabyte of data all for around 100lbs?
http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/
14+ inch laptops are fine if all you're doing is carrying them from your car to the house/work. If you ever have to lug one through an airport, you'd understand why thin and light notebooks are popular with businessmen.
These CULV ones are now for regular folks who don't have deep enough pockets to buy a $2000 Lenovo X300 or Toshiba Protege R600. Personally, if anyone comes out out with a 12" 16:10 (1280x800) CULV laptop that's around $600, I'll be lining up to buy one.
By "Special Mojo" you screen as dim as it will go, no wifi or bluetooth or doing anything really worthwhile with it?
meh i just got my gateway Lt31.
Don't they know only Mac fans are willing to pay over $1000 for a laptop?
Don't they know that thanks to Americas super hax pricing system, these will be well under $1000? Regardless of whatever moron thinks that there's a 1:1 rate from currency conversion to price?
Still, a grand for a netbook? That's still pretty high. That's like Sony high.. I would think maybe 600-700 tops for high end netbook in the US market but even that is still a pretty rough sell.
^
The systems going for ~$1000 (though they will most definitely be cheaper when the hit the US) aren't actually netbooks. They're ultraportables. Slight difference in computing power there.
Anyone know if the 11" version is going to be available with an inbuilt 3G/HSDPA modem?
So far I find myself torn between the X120 and the new Acer 11" CULV model(s), so it all comes down to specs and price and little things like an in-built modem could make all the difference.
The Acer is easily 449 shipped if you're in the United States. It uses a single core SU3500 but a dual core version is due out in October, it's already been sighted in China. The dual core will use the same SU4100 as this Samsung. I would expect that 449 price to move up higher of course with a dual core version, so maybe around ~500? The Samsung is hefty amount more at $700 if we assume euros:USD 1:1 conversion, which generally happens.
However, I know that the Acer only claims about ~6 hours battery life on the US model. The Samsung we don't really know yet because the claim for 9 only applies to the 6-cell, while the 11.6 inch model only has a 4cell. Perhaps they will offer a 6-cell upgrade option, that would be awesome. I would totally pay 700 for a dual core netbook sized laptop with HDMI out, 9 hour battery life, and all that jazz.
Anyone got release date rumors for the United States?
The European version of the 1410 gets an 8 hour battery. : (
@Flowah: even if it is a 1:1 Euro:Dollar rate, that still means you get away with paying less.
Those of us unfortunate to live here in the UK get royally shafted price-wise as we quite often end up with a 1:1 Pound:Dollar ratio, which is just price-gouging of the most disgusting variety.
Thank you for the information, it's most helpful.
It does seem to sway matters in favour of the Acer, which I have read will be coming in with an integrated modem option and, as Nerdy Desi states, should offer an 8 hour battery life on this side of the pond.
The only problem I have is that as of now I haven't been able to find the Acer on sale over here.
Sorry, I guess I kinda assumed you were American. Wait, why am I apologizing, it's like assuming you're a good looking guy :P
Yeah the European version is the 1810T and it comes with a larger capacity battery that gives you 8 hours. Tests on notebookreview.com show that users generally hit that mark, so you can kind of tell yourself that's what you're paying for :P
And yeah, you europeans always get shafted with prices on electronics, but hey, at least you're getting em right? The 1810 came out in europe first before a gimped version made it over to the states, and I just talked to a Samsung rep who told me there is no release date for this Samsung X120 in the US. He also said that there was ONLY a 4-cell battery option. I don't know what that means for battery life, but it sucks.
The Acer is a great machine though, I was heavily looking into it but decided to wait for the dualcore version and was also put off by the fact that they gimped the battery for US customers. I'll be waiting until the Acer dual core model is available and see if this Samsung is out to compete against it and then make my choice. They're very similar machines in most respects.
Oh, please, do feel free to continue to assume I'm good looking - it's the only time anyone's likely to think that way about me, so I best make the most out of it!
You say "at least we're getting 'em" about stuff like the Acer but, as I said, it's still nowhere to be seen in the UK :-(
Thank you again though, the information you've provided has been most helpful.
guess that is 15.6' , not 14.6'
Does it have Wimax? Essential for a netbook, as I
m in a town that has the service and it's rolling out all over the place, now
lol and everyone was complaining about the price of the nokia booklet 3g.
the 11.6 incher wasn't looking too bad until i saw that samsung had used hpmini1000-style side buttons on the trackpad. horrible choice!
Less than impressive, and pricey, too. The Acer 1410, and soon to come 1810TZ (dual core), is a better price, lighter and doesn't look so strange on the sides. I usually like industrial looking designs, but that just looks plain weird with the ports molded into the sides. It also looks like it would invite snags and breakage. As another user mentioned, too, what an awful touchpad choice. Hopefully build quality ends up being better than the screen shots indicate, because so far, it's pretty underwhelming.
I looked at it again, and I still hate the touchpad and the ports jutting out of the frame. I have to applaud Samsung's marketing though. Someone will buy it just because it is called 420.
