Touchscreen HP Pavilion dv3 leaks out, brings dm1 ultraportable and Core i7 dv8 along for the ride
Well, well, what's this? We were just sent what looks like a rough draft of HP's Winter 2009/2010 consumer catalog, and it's got details on three as-yet-announced machines. The most interesting is the Pavilion dv3 with TouchSmart, which has a 13.3-inch touchscreen, but there's also confirmation of that previously-leaked Pavilion dm1 11.6-inch CULV thin-and-light and the monster Pavilion dv8 with an 18.4-inch screen and a new mobile Core i7 processor. That's a pretty strong lineup to back the new Envys, we'd say -- and for whatever reason, we're fascinated by this new trend of sticking touchscreens on regular laptops. We'll see if the dv3's TouchSmart 3.0 build is any more usable or sensible than Lenovo's take on the idea soon enough, we hope -- for now, check out the whole catalog in the gallery.

want the touchscreen!!!
I don't think this is final version because the mini 311 is not listed. Dumpster diving.
Cool, but i'll wait for the next tablet. The tx3 perhaps?
Thats what I was thinking. Touchscreen but not convertible? Sorry but no deal
Everything is going to become touch screen very shortly. Sadly some machines just shouldn't be touch screen but that's not going to stop them.
I don't think touch-screen will completely replace the tactile feedback of buttons anytime soon. If anything, they will probably be used in conjunction with each other such as in current tablet notebooks or Project Natal.
I think I missed something important. Price?!
Same thing I came in to ask.
Found info on price:
Read - Pavilion dm3 listing - €677.11 / $968 - http://www.hardware.info/nl-NL/productdb/bGlkbJiYmJXKZsg/viewproductprices/HP_Pavilion_DM31020ED_VJ248EA/
YES YES YES YES YES!
I used to be a Mac fanboy but thank the lord for Windows 7! :)
touchsmart 3.0wn?
Touchscreen is pointless is a normal notebook. Tablet would be best. Isnt it more work to reach out and touch the screen than to click with the mouse?
Yes.
I could see limited usefulness. Basically when you want to *draw* on the screen. Though definitely not as useful as a convertible tablet PC.
DM3 may be very very very relevant to my interests
alas, it has only up to 500 MB HDD :]
Typo set aside, I agree. Would have liked to see it in a 12.1"-model instead.
Id like to see a HP envy with the Dv8's specs. And what the hell is the trackpads being on the left side of the laptop?
Envy15 has a Core i7, not the C2Qs as they say here. And a much better graphics card too.
The only thing you're missing off is the resolution (probably 1680 vs Full HD) but at 2.35kg vs 4kg, I'd get the Envy any day.
Trackpads are centered under the QWERTY keyboard, directly below the space bar. It appears to be on the left because the extra width of the 16:9 aspect ratio allows for a number pad on the right hand side of the computer. If your hands were centered over the QWERTY during typing, and the pad was "centered" on the body, your very likely to brush it as you type and shift your mouse--or with tap-to-click, click on something! Even moreso, just think of how annoying it would be reach down and to the right instead of just brushing the pad with your thumb.
Someone always asks this in these threads, and the answer is always the same: the trackpad is centered under the QWERTY, which is offset by the number pad in the extra real estated afforded by wide aspect ratios.
Exactly. Touchscreen is like 3G, just because you can bundle it in doesn't mean you should.
Yet they will do it because people wants it for no good reason.
Please keep things where they belong (touchscreens in tablets and handhelds, 3G in phones and routers).
Damn, this was a reply to Templarian.. Or digitallysick, pick your favorite
Actually, if this is like the HP touchsmart TX2 (which I recently got a display model of at Best Buy for $399) it folds up to be a convertable tablet. It's a pretty cool gadget actually.
Envy 15 has a core i7 processor right. It says only core 2 qaud in the pictures:(
Touchscreen on a PC is great, but isn't the real question whether or not it will have multi-touch capability??? Or is that a feature that comes automatically with Windows 7?
It's a Windows 7 standard feature.
Windows 7 has multitouch built-in but still requires a multitouch capable screen or touchpad.
More specifically it's a standard feature with Windows 7 Home Premium Edition and above. The netbook-centric "Starter Edition" will apparently be very limited in the way of touch functionality.
Can someone please give me this info? how does 4830 gpu in the envy 15 compare to a gtx260m......Can i play crysis at at least gamer settings on the envy 15??
Turn this into a Tablet PC and you found yourself a possible buyer, or make the screen smaller and keep the price low, HP DO BOTH
I would think about buying one if this was turned into a tablet PC and running Windows 7. Maybe well see a Tx3 with better specs and quality then whats selling now for models of the touchscreen tablets.
One has to wonder how hard it is to introduce a display swivel, and why HP chose not to do so.
Not everyone wants a tablet pc and this notebook is for them, not tablet pc aficionados. Someone like myself just wants a touch screen notebook whose screen doesn't flop all over the place when it's not in tablet mode and doesn't carry a tablet PC cost premium. I cringe at the though of paying a cost premium (as every tablet pc i've seen so far comes with) just to have a floppy bouncy touch screen i'll rarely use in tablet mode anyway.
The convertible tablet-laptops I've seen have all been ugly, the hinge ruins it for me.
Um.. EXCUSE ME? The TX2 has a swivel display. Are you people completely blind?
And why wait until the TX3? That'd be waiting until at least ...AT LEAST March'10.
And although you or I may not find a use for a touchscreen computer... there are MILLIONS out there that will.
Don't give your hard earn money to a company that don't care about you after ur warranty is over....when for a fact they won't support their own problem when it's a defected laptop...HP SUCKS. want more info go to www.HPLIES.com to find out more.
Don't be a victim...Apple supports their customer when they had the nvidia defect...HP lies about the defect and make you pay 400 bucks!..
Um.. yea, Apple supports their products after the warranty.... IF YOU PAY for it.
HP is one of the few that will give you support after the warranty ends via chat and email. If you want more coverage... PAY FOR IT.
I'm completely baffled why people (and more importantly manufacturers) think touch screens are useless on a regular notebook or netbook? Do you actually enjoy using a touch pad all the time, or lugging a mouse around with you? I hate touch pads because i find even the best of them are tedious to use for more then a few minutes. I just bought an Acer D150 netbook and the very first thing i did was tear it down to the chassis and put a touch screen on it. It is now a thousand times easier and more pleasant to use. Touch screens are completely intuitive and natural to use. (When was the last time you used an ATM that wasn't touch screen based?) I could care less about tablet functionality and every tablet i've seen wobbles all over the place when NOT in tablet mode and touched. the hinges on them all suck big time! That's not for me as i rarely use tablet mode anyway. I just want to be able to buy a touch screen portable pc's i don't have to gut and modify straight out of the box! I'm glad to see HP (and engadget) are finally getting with the program!
Why does a touch screen only belong in the tablet and handheld categories? I don't get it... the alternative is to use a tiny PITA touch pad or lug a mouse around with you. Unlike the touchpad a touch screen is scaled 1:1 to the screen and layed right over top of it, and unlike the mouse it is always there and ready to use. Adding a touch screen to a portable pc seems like a no brainer to me...
The problem is that, depending on how you are oriented to the laptop, you might have to reach out a bit to touch the screen. Try doing that for a prolonged period of time without getting a cramp in your arm.
Darn it, my last comment was meant to be a reply to DarkLight's comment "Exactly. Touchscreen is like 3G, just because you can bundle it in doesn't mean you should. Yet they will do it because people wants it for no good reason. Please keep things where they belong (touchscreens in tablets and handhelds, 3G in phones and routers)."
BTW you don't think 3G belongs in portable pc's either? So according to you i want a portable pc with a touchscreen and 3g for no good reason? lol
I just hope the built quality won't be as crappy (I was going to use the word, starting with letter "s") as the current dv3z line up. I bought dv3z model back in february and I am about to send it to second repair since it's still covered by the warranty. Lemme tell you 2 things that suck ass with the current dv3 model: built quality and heat management
1. some parts squeak and the whole laptop feel like being put together from thousand plasticky parts hold together with a damn glue stick. My screen bezel started peeling after 3.5 months from purchase date. the "chrome" looking borders along body squeak whenever I grab the laptop with one hand. I sent the machine once to HP so they can "fix" the bezel problem and it still loose.
2. The heat sink and air vent is so bad that the cooling fan will start spinning at full turbo speed within less than 5 minutes after booting up the machine. My 4-years old Averatec laptop doesn't heat up that bad...and that's averatec. I sent it for repair, along with the bezel issue, and it work slightly better. I ended up getting a lapdesk to keep the airflow clear and cool. oh btw, it wasn't dust issue, since I clean the machine quite regularly at least every couple weeks.
The whole touchscreen thing....I think it's more a gimmick than anything. I agree with some of the comments here. other "issues" that I think HP should improve with this model line up are the glossy body and screen (both are fingerprint and scratch magnet...especially if it's going to be touchscreen), better mic (the current model has one of the worst built-in mic that I've ever use), and better webcam (at least give us auto-focus and a decent image sensor that has decent noise reduction for the image quality)
If Multitouch is ever going to avoid being the next SideShow, it has to start showing up on LARGER displays.
First, on 16 and 17 inch laptops, and then on the bigger desktop station displays.
If it doesn't start happening in the next 6 months, it will never happen. Developers will never seriously code for it and users will never even remember it exists. They'll assume when they see it on CNN that its a fancy camera trick like the holographic host.
Which isn't to say that it shouldn't fail. Who wants a screen full of fingerprints?
Which is better, the GeForce 105m or The Ion?
Benchmarks according to notebookcheck.net:
3326 in 3DMark05 - Ion
3731 in 3DMark05 - GeForce 105m
