Sony UK site unveils new VAIO P with 2GHz Atom and Windows 7
Look, the upcoming VAIO X might be all fancy with its 11.6-inch screen and all day battery life, but Sony's not ignoring its original underpowered-and-overpriced funky laptop -- three new VAIO P configurations just went up on Sony's UK site today, all sporting Windows 7. The big news is that the top-end configuration will now sport a 2.0GHz Atom Z550, but there's also two low-end models with the 1.86GHz Atom Japanese P's have had for a while now but only the $2,000 Signature model carried Stateside. Apart from that we're not seeing much else -- this certainly looks like a modest Win7-related spec bump and not the rumored VAIO P mark 2. No word on pricing or US availability yet, but we're sure to find out more very, very soon.

As a current VAIO P (1.6ghz/2gb/Win 7) owner, I can honestly say...
ANY Atom-based P-Series is just not powerful enough for the asking price.
May i ask what made you buy it in the first place? Im curious
penis extension.
Processor aside...
The Sony VAIO P-series is a brilliant piece of engineering.
It's small, ultra-light weight, fully-featured, has a great GPS function, BT, HSDPA/WWAN. and it's quite beautiful.
Shipping it with Vista was an issue, but with a bit of 'de-bloating' and an upgrade to Win 7, it runs quite nicely.
I already had 5 other netbooks, so my attitude regarding the Sony P was... Why Not Buy The Ultimate Netbook?
The processor isn't as bad as the fact it has a GMA500. I find that the most frustrating thing about the P. Other than that I love it.
Wow! a 9" Atom netbook for the same price as a Alienware M17x
I'll take four, so I can do some quad core netbooking
seriously though, what are laptop makers thinking these days.. everything is going down hill pretty quick
rofl nice one, lets unify our 4 and 4 netbooks so we will beat the evil octocore mac pro ^^
That's a hefty premium for a faster processor and Windows 7.
But this is Sony so, yeah.
That new HP Ion that dropped recently is a lot more bang for less buck, and thats where i'm going.
I think Sony is involved in some social experiment to see how many idiots they can lure with the Vaio P
Any company that tries to screw the public so blatantly deserves to go down the crapper.
there is a sony style in my local mall and I have to say that vaio p is a pice of shit.
Crap resolution, flimsy keyboard yuck! Just plain wrong. And the asking price for that designer toy, which is what it is, is ludicrous.
and we care about this because.......oh yeah its sony...no one cares....or will buy it
Wait, a $2,000 netbook???
Another sign of the apocalypse, we're doomed.
My asus netbook from sept 2008 has 1.8GHz Atom, 2GB ram, 9inch Screen, and only cost £300, 8hr battery, SSD memory, running windows 7
why would anyone spend $2000 on a vaio p
I'll be buying 1 of each color. Sony does it again, with such amazing innovation. Well worth the premium! /sigh
Hey let me tell you a little secret. The macbook air is a better deal since it is faster and has the best operating system on the planet, for the same price.
That's all good and well, but...
Placed side-by-side, just as I'm looking at them both now, my MacBook Air is barely thinner, with an absolutely ungainly huge 'footprint' when compared with my strikingly svelte VAIO P.
The AIR is what it is, but in many ways it's far more functionally limited than my VAIO P that at least has a suitable number of ports, card readers, et al.
An nvidia ion platform based vaio p would def. sell me to get one asap.
I like it and want it but can't effort it - even as an pcb engineer with an good job - so I think Sony will not get thew return for this development because I believe a lot of people are attracted by this design but aren't rich enough to buy it. The all-over-the-world walkman company lose its direction finally....
Things I'm sick of:
#1 "Im not buying this, therefore the company has lost direction/is going under" posts. Sorry, no.
#2 Bleats for Nvidia ION in ultraportables this small. Have you *seen* the power usage for ION versus the GMA500? Battery usage is already too short, sticking ION in there would render it utterly useless.
#3 "XXX is way a cheaper Atom netbook than the Vaio P", "ZZZ is way more powerful for the same price". Sure it's way overpriced. But show me a similar netbook with the same size and weight - they're all heavier and bulkier. The lightest Asus (one of the old models) is half as heavy again, and the later models are more than double. Macbook Air, twice the weight. The Alienware M17x?! It weighs nearly *12lbs*. Even better value is putting $2k into a whitebox desktop.
