iBuyPower ships Core i7-powered Battalion 101 W870CU gaming laptop
You could certainly argue that many of today's gaming laptops are fungible, but if you're scouting a new beast with a Core i7 within and plenty of customizable options, iBuyPower has one of the few available today. The outfit has just launched its Battalion 101 W870CU, a 17.3-inch behemoth with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution LCD, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 GPU, up to 500GB of hard drive space, an optional Blu-ray drive, built-in 7-in-1 card reader, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi and Windows 7 Home Premium. It's up for order as we speak, but you'll be coughing up at least $2,505 for the privilege. Or, you know, you could just snap up ASUS' Core i7-equipped G51J, which retails for just $1,499...

For that i rather buy a kick ass quad core desktop PC.
Can't resist buying something with "Battalion" in the name. :|
In observance of recession, I only spent $999 for bestbuy's Asus G60VX :D

Core 2 Duo? blech!
my friend "only" had $1500 to spend on a new laptop so i talked him into getting the ASUS G51J. im really looking forward to seeing that thing in person.
its nice to see that at least someone is experimenting with different screen resolutions, take a hint dell, you too lenovo.
P.S, lenovo ideapads. thinkpads are all-good
I know Dell allows you to select a higher resolution panel, and I am pretty sure Lenovo do too.
Ahem.
Dell XPS 16 - 1365x768, 1600x900, 1920x1080*
Alienware M15X - 1600x900, 1920x1080
*RGB LED
those resolutions are pretty much 'exclusive' to the US, outside of the US of A we are less fortunate.
those resolutions are pretty much 'exclusive' to the US, us who live outside of the US of A are less fortunate.
Dammit, what the hell engadget? why does your comment system do this??? And where is my avatar!??
/venting.
That wouldnt cut cake, it would crush it.
meh, the cake is a lie
and this is yet another rebranded Clevo, it's cheaper here;

but between you and me, I'd hit that 8690, it's 15" (for those of us with fragile backs) and still packs a GTX280 for $1680, G51J who?
Seems to be an odd time to buy a gaming laptop with Arrandale so close to release.
All that hardware and no license for 7 Ultimate, hmm...
Maybe because Win7 Ultimate isn't needed for all but the most hardcore enthusiasts? It has nothing added that 98% of users will use over Pro or Home Premium.
That's quite cheap for high-end specs compared to Macbook Pro.
I own a macbook pro and frankly, i must admit that the "pro" means anything but professional.
Am I the only person thinks that clevo's design is awfully ugly?
Compared to their previous models? Yes.
Also, great job Darren on posting about another Clevo rebadge.
I like asus' W90, but it's not i7 and out of market.
I like asus' G51j, but it's not powerful enough on graphics.
They are all nicely designed laptop which as matter of fact design make a big impact on me, because eventually you are looking at the physical laptop most of the time.
When I first heard about Asus' w90, I knew that was the laptop for me. 18.4", dual video cards, and a price that was competitive to the current Clevo offering. So a little time went past, and when I had the money to purchase the w90, I found out that it was sold for a limited time only! I missed out, and have been aching for Asus to release another 18.4" laptop since...and from what I heard, purchasers where very happy with the specs/price point of the w90.
Hey Asus, give us the w90 back, please!!!!!!!!!!!!
It wasn't "limited time only" it was yanked from the market because it had horrible design flaws, overheated, and zero video driver support. Read reviews on the W90. It looked great on paper, but sucked monkey in real life... too bad though, it was great for competition. Now nobody pwns gaming like the Clevo M980NU.
sigh. NEVER BUY FROM iBuyPower. they are the worst company to do business with. they are the reason i started to build my own computers.
Agreed on that. I've had all kinds of problems w/ my iBuyPower desktop. Their support and service leave a whole lot to be desired.
A lot of complaints about ibuypower floating around on the web. And, as the article points out, this computer has only marginally better specs than Asus' G51J, yet costs a G more. I just wish the G51J had a blu ray drive.
+1 Their customer support cost me hours of my life that I will never get back, and I'm pretty sure my IQ fell a few points while talking to their "techs".
Why is it Laptops still use 320 Gig HDs as Standards? Shouldn't a laptop like this have a 500 GB HD as standard, it isn't like it costs that much more to include it.
The 320gb drives (and 160gb, etc) have two platters, and the access time is supposed to be faster than on single platter drives. For a lot of people, storage isn't as important as speed, especially on gaming machines.
I must be the only one who thinks a 'Gaming Laptop' Is a bit ridiculous. No?
Yes, yes you are.
Grr... I meant to finish that comment with the following:
I mean, After I saw a guy water cool his laptop, and he couldn't move it at all, I kinda asked what the point was.
4 cores @ 2.0ghz, but 1920x1080??!?!!? STOP WITH THE 1080, Vertical screen size is essential!!! Please bring back 1920x1200 or go higher...
