ah, i'm excited! i hope they're able to keep the price down on the scarlet
@msur13
Agreed! Great video as well. Red makes me happy.
Nice. Red products are very expensive but damn good!
@Dusty "very expensive"???? Dude you can build out an entire system on thr REDone for only 30,000, that is insanely cheap.
@magic6435
Ya... still expensive for me :P
@magic6435 For just hoarding consumers. Thats lots O.O
@Jacinth you guys have to get the point that these are not consumer cameras. These are meant to compete with the new DSLR video market by adding more features and better tech for cheaper. This will allow indie film makers to achieve much higher quality without blowing the bank and will make them think twice about the limitations some of the more mainstream options have.
The PR guy quoted a sub-5000k price on a whole rig if i heard him correct. That's huge considering how much the individual parts, screen, etc are to put together on top of the camera/lens.
@Dusty
I have a cousin in the film industry, and sub $5k for a full film system is a bargain basement price for the quality you get.
Aw sweet! I would love to play with one of these.
Damn I want to record content at this high quality resolution I'm a videophile like possible everyone else :)
Not relevant to anything I do, and yet I drool.
I will never have a use for this, yet I still want it.....
But does it need to be so goddamn ugly
I'll probably still get one though
I want!!!
BTW, where's the Nikon D3S hands-on you've been promising us?
so what are RED products for?
and what purpose do they serve?
is it like the lego set for the filmmaker?
with godlike image quality?
@creepin
"is it like the lego set for the filmmaker?
with godlike image quality?"
Yes, you just answered your question :)
@creepin
I wouldn't say godlike. There are a few camcorders with better PQ but they cost a few hundred thousand dollars more...Sony's f23, f53 and the new srw-9000 which is actually pretty cheap at about 50gs.
@TheHiFiKid
I disagree about the srw-9000, the RED One has a superior sensor and shoots up to 2K, the srw-9000 is only capable of 1080p.
@sparky25890
And its the Sony F35 not F53.
@sparky25890
The RED One shoots 4.5k.
Very impressive. Indy producers will love the 5k version.
asgdahdsfadghdshagd.
Can't wait.
"It does both (video and still) in RAW all the time."
Epic Win!
wow ok this one of the few things worthy at CES this year.
Oh my, oh my, oh, oh, oh, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
RED even a tiny pic of you send me over the edge. Supermodels and pr0n stars be dammed. This is just so much hotter!
RED products, the ones we'll never own or ever use because we aren't professional video producers. Still fun though.
@mugatu I know PLENTY of Red owners that will never be professional... This new cheaper one isn't helping any
@mugatu
I guess I didn't read the article closely enough. You know amateurs who use RED video hardware? They must be cheaper than I thought or your friends are Ferrari drivers.
@mugatu Enough guys out there have convinced their parents to drink the Red Kool Aid... Oh Yeah!
Who then drop the required dough for a kit, because nothing will stand in the way of their little poopsiekins and success... Who then proceeds to shoot anything and everything for free and shittily, thereby eliminating a large percentage of said investment... Such is the way of the entertainment business.
I think the guy with D3X was going to hump the Scarlett if it was not taken from him.
@uscmafia
The entire time I was watching that video, I was thinking "That guy taking stills is, at this moment, the most annoying human being on the planet". He was constantly pawing at it, demanding different angles, and polluting the audio with his camera clicking.
Honestly, this thing fits in your hand- there's just not that much product to photograph. As a reader, I would've been much happier with a photo gallery of 10 good images and a much-less-annoying video clip.
@JiminyGlick No kidding. No wonder why photographers often have a bad reputation. It's photographers acting like this disrespecting manic ass while doing their job. I kept wanting to shout, dude easy easy! The guys acts like he is going to have a heart attack!
Uh, that was Nilay Patel, don't you watch the Engadget show?
I'm guessing Nilay was all over the camera because (A) He probably couldn't figure out how to shoot with the D3S and so needed to take a lot of shots to get a decent one and (B) He was psyched about this awesome camera just popping up out of nowhere.
Drool all you like but I still won't be convinced until I see some footage. It's easy to toss around buzz words like "5K" and raise some eyebrows, but in the end, it's all about the story. Unless you'd rather pay eight bucks to see test footage in a theater.
I'll stick with the 7D for now and see what happens.
So they went from "3K for $3K!" to about $5K and it will probably cost something around 6000 euros around here. Goddamnit...
@Terjay The are selling the 2/3rd 3k scarlet fixed lens ready to shoot (card recorder, battery, display (no bomb evf thats 3000 alone) for $3750. The body for fixed lens without add ons is way lower then that (think 2500 or something like that has been tossed around). and you can order directly from red so no need for inflated reseller prices - they are shipping to euro zone.
@fALk
$3750 was the old price. It's currently projected to be $4750 for the fixed kit, hence "about $5000."
what the hell is this ? some movie recording HD thing ?
sounds like much more the way that guys wetting himself over it
@theskill Not HD, much better. the current RED one (which i shoot with everyday) shoots 4k (4x the Resolution of 1080p), this one will shoot 3k, so somewhere in the middle. The real beauty of these cameras, as ted pointed out, is that they shoot raw video. The canon 5dmkii (and 7d) is sweet, but if you've ever tried editing that footage, or god forbid color grading it, you know that it shoots very highly compressed h.264, so it's essentially a great looking webcam, whereas you could actually make a movie with this cam, print it out to 35mm and blow it up to a 35ft screen.
@johnnyclem wow thanks alot for that reply.
Guess these things are megaexpensive then, why would someone need one of those then ? to shoot tv programmes or something?
like u can get little HD cams now and thats what things like smallville are filmed on arent they ? Is this like the SLR or Video cams?
@johnnyclem meh, I'm still developing an at-home 180 degree fish eye IMAX lens and screen FTW .... RED looks a little pink nowwww... DON'T IT!?
@johnnyclem 7D/5D footage looks beautiful on a big screen and if you went the extra mile and got a print done you eliminate even more issues like aliasing. I've seen 5D footage on a 40 foot screen at my theater, what you're saying simply isn't true. Now sure if it shot RAW it would be even better but it works as it is now. Just look at Philip Bloom and Vincent Laforet for more "legit" proof.
I hope no one ever tries to pass it through airport security with BOMB EVF written on one component and REDMOTE written on another. That'll make for a day much longer than the recent Newark security mishap!
@sharms: that's exactly what I thought.. I think RED is better at renaming the BOMB EVF to something better..
@sharms Still, what terrorist would actually write BOMB on his bomb?
@max2020 Agreed. But imagine the plight of the poor TSA agent who opens a bag to reveal two separate components in it - one with BOMB EVF written on it and the other saying REDMOTE. (1) I really doubt an average TSA agent has heard of RED as a brand name... RED is not as ubiquitous as let's say - an iPod. (2) let's face it... all RED cameras/equipment do look a little military grade to begin with. I can picture their equipment getting confused for more than what it is at the airport.
Not trying to be all sensitive and sh*t but given the world we live in today, I think the choice of words from RED is as poor as the Oregon man's who scrawled a note last Wednesday on his flight to Hawaii about crashing in the water, etc. Let's not make the authorities' jobs more difficult by having one more reason to close down an airport for a day.
@sharms Way to grill the Red-man Chad but Ted sure knew his stuff. Awesome video!
That camera is truly drool-inducing indeed.
@sharms
I think someone brought this up on the RED forum, but Jim likes the name and is sticking with it. On top of that, they have an accessory in the works that will be some kind of camera support system with NATO rails and is called RED Gunner. This is in case your REDMote fails to detonate your Bomb EVF.
The military design makes sense given that Jim owned Oakley and Oakley makes a ton of stuff for the military.
What kind of router do they have mounted up in the background in the Engadget trailer?
@Jake Smith Looks like a Cisco Aironet access point…but thats just a guess.
