Apple rumor roundup: future of media edition

The rumor: The iPhone Blog points us to a China Times piece setting the tablet's screen size at 9.7 inches. (We covered the 22-inch touchscreen iMac rumor separately.)
Our take: At this point we've heard pretty much every screen size from eight inches to 11, so we're not making a call either way on this one. We will say that the only other product with a 9.7-inch screen we can think of off-hand is the Kindle DX -- a relatively simple device that's still so large and heavy we generally hold it with two hands. Just something to think about.
The rumor: Ars Technica talks to the director of the OLED Association, who rules out a 10.1-inch AMOLED screen by saying "there's no real production of 10.1-inch panels." Oh, and the only place to buy those would be Samsung, really, and Sammy doesn't have the capacity.
Our take: We never thought a 10.1 OLED screen was likely: not only are prices insane, but OLED still has terrible daylight viewing issues. The Ars piece is well worth a read, though -- it's a nice look at the state of OLED.
The rumor: Peter Kafka at All Things Digital rounds up some rumors of his own. He thinks it's a "good bet" the NYT will be involved, but the music industry won't be on board, although Apple is briefing some music execs as a "courtesy." What's more, we'll be hearing a lot about "enhanced e-books," and there's obviously a video component to all of this, potentially with specific Disney involvement, but also potentially with the existing catalog of video in the iTunes store.
Our take: All of this sounds reasonable enough -- although the video situation seems a little more complex, since some HD rentals in the iTunes Store can only be played on the Apple TV, not a Mac or an iPhone, and we all know how much studios like Disney love it when they don't get paid extra for new devices and services. That certainly seems like a big bundle of issues if we're talking about a portable device with a large screen that's focused on media playback, so we'll see how much leverage Steve's managed to exert at the event next week.
The rumor: Boy Genius says he's gotten some info on iPhone OS 4.0, which is doubly intriguing since we've heard it's the basis for the tablet's OS. Highlights: multitasking, new system-wide multitouch gestures, lots of UI changes to make navigation "easier and more efficient," and some sort of new contacts and calendar syncing system. All told, it'll make the iPhone much closer to being a "full-fledged computer." Bad news? 4.0 will be for the iPhone 3G and 3GS only.
Our take: Another perfectly sensible set of rumors, really. Multitasking and UI refinements to handle it seem like a given, and we agree with BGR that new gestures make sense if 4.0 is also being used for the tablet in some way. It also makes sense that the original iPhone won't get this upgrade, at least not for free -- recall that Apple books iPhone revenue over 24 months using subscription accounting in order to dole out free OS upgrades during that time; the first-gen model came out in June of 2007, so the clock's up. Given the basic hardware similarities between the original and 3G, we wouldn't be surprised if Apple sells 4.0 on the side -- or it's hacked. Yeah, it'll be hacked.
Update: One more rumor for you -- MacRumors dug up some evidence that Apple's been registering an "iPad" trademark internationally under a variety of dummy corporations. We've been hearing that name pop up since about August, actually, so we'll see what comes of it -- we think it's way too close to "iPod," but maybe that's actually a good thing in Apple's eyes.
Whew, that's a lot for today. A lot of freaking words -- come on people, we need a photo. We can't keep staring at this lame SIM tray image for eight days, you know? Let's make it happen.

Can't wait. Keep 'em coming Engadget!
@ustna
can anyone explain this accounting thing where they HAVE to charge for updates? Since when does any company HAVE to charge anything for a product, especially a software update?
@ustna Is this the leaked launch page you were talking about?
.

I sure hope we are not all left flaccid (on 27th), after all of this rumor-mill foreplay.
@radicalxedward
"can anyone explain this accounting thing where they HAVE to charge for updates? Since when does any company HAVE to charge anything for a product, especially a software update?"
See, there's this thing called "money." People like it. In order to get it, they will make, build, or otherwise create stuff so that others will give them this "money." You might even say that "money" is why businesses exist in the first place.
In other words, why WOULDN'T they charge for software updates so long as people are willing to pay for it?
@ustna
God bless you, Engadget. I sincerely needed to read an Apple article today. I thought you'd completely forgotten about the most important tech company in the world when the stock is shooting up ever higher on heated anticipation of the Tech Product of the Year or maybe even the decade. Steve Jobs is just about ready to kick the entire computing industry in the crotch and I need full details leading up to that swing.
@radicalxedward
Since Apple started the whole iPhone OS thing with the first iPhone and then the iPod Touch, they announced that iPhone users will get free OS upgrades, since they pay a monthly usage fee; however, iPod Touch users do not pay a monthly usage fee and get all of the features of the iPhone, minus calling and 3G internet, so Apple charges iPod Touch users to upgrade the OS (it's $4.95 btw). It's a small price to pay for the new features/options for an iPod Touch, which is a one time purchase anyway. And it's free for the iPhone.
@ustna How are either of the posts "Replying" to mine?
To those people: Is your message THAT important that it MUST be at the top? L..O..L
@One Love
If Steve Jobs so much as farts, I want to know about it. It's been rumored that there is a correlation between how long he farts and how good his keynote will be. A long, gentle fart means he's relaxed and will deliver a deliberate, well-paced demo. A quick rip fart means he's tense and will hurry through and not grab the audience's attention to the fullest. C'mon Steve, keep it long and gentle.
@radicalxedward They don’t technically have to charge for it, but if they didn’t they’d have to restate their earnings. Basically, GAAP says that if you continue to actively support something you have to recognize revenue for the duration of the time you support it. So, if you continue to provide updates to the iPhone for 3 years you’d have to spread the revenue over that time period (I'm not sure about the exact timing). Apple took the revenue for the iPhone at the time of sale, so they’d have a major, costly restatement if they didn’t keep charging.
@radicalxedward Apple has been very good of concealing their product to the curious cats -- I'm talking about their tablet -- even just a week from the official statement all we have (most of all) are rumors only.. http://bit.ly/apple-tablet-details-compiled
Its starting to became clear, that it is on these rumors Apple makes their product unveiling more exciting (They use anticipation to build a tremendous longing for their products)
@Cameron You're too busy being a smartarse to read the question properly. As in, why do they HAVE to charge, not why ARE they charging?
Man. I cant wait for this apple event so I can STOP hearing about stupid rumors every single day.
oh well, I guess it really isn't affecting my life in any way
@Dapman02 That's a good point. Engadget doesn't usually have a whole lot of rumor-mill stuff, but recently they've had a WHOLE lot of it. Everything Apple, WinMo7, etc.
@statelypenguin
we will be having 'apple table rumor round up' everyday till 27th !
@Dapman02
Indeed, i've lost count of how many posts there's been about what "could" be at this damn event.
@Dapman02 They have updated iPhone Demo to 4.0 so developers can test their apps.
.

@Dapman02
Get used to that paint spray apple picture cuz that's all we're gonna be seeing over the next 2 weeks.
@Dapman02
You'll still have to listen to how successful the tablet will be and how many millions of elite users are lining up to buy it even after the event ends. Everywhere you walk, you'll hear the Apple tablet buzz from people's lips. It will be inescapable.
The 27th is going to be epic! Of course engadget will crash with all the bickering and nerd fighting going on. Of course being a big nerd I will be right here joining in.
@SteveJobsCEO
Steve, can you give me a job? Check your e-mail.
@SteveJobsCEO shouldn't you be at the event.... you better be, or the fools will push the stock price down.. AAPL is covering C looses right now, and I hope it remains that way.
pal :)
If these two rumors ended up being true, I would yell out FAIL very loudly.
1. 1000 dollar price
2. Iphone OS on the tablet.
You would think a 1000 dollar tablet would at least have a full operating system! That Archos one, that costs about 500 bucks, runs Windows 7. As in, not some gimpy phone OS.
@Nitesh Yeah, because tacking on touch features to a full blown OS has worked so well for Microsoft in the past....
@Chris Murphy
Correct. A full OS on a tablet would be a total fail. Only nerds want to run Windows 7 with their finger.
A tablet is a different type of device, and as such needs a different type of OS. A modified iPhone OS with easy task switching would be much easier to navigate and use when compared with running OS X or Windows on it.
@Nitesh Have you used an Archos 9? I have and it's a slow blundering pc of $@#T... 2+ mins to even start up, the out of the box experience is sad. Battery was dead, had to charge it for hours to get it ready, then wait forever to boot, then another boring Win 7 setup. It can't handle video, it's slow all around performance makes it nothing more then another underpowered, overpriced netbook.
I believe the quote "we can't make a sub 500 dollar computer that isn't a pc of junk" more and more everytime I use one of these "other" products.
Needless to say the Archos 9 was returned within 24 hours. 100% crap.
@ebgolfin
I'll be perfectly happy to give Windows 7 the finger even if it's not on a touch-screen model.
@Chris Murphy Except that multitouch was built into Windows 7 from the beginning, and given it's design, accomodates it quite nicely, even on something as small at the Asus T91MT.
It's a far cry from the "tablet edition" Windows XP. Anyone who's used it could tell you that (especially when you roll in a pressure sensitive pen for the creative types).
Wonder if the iPad is going to have pressure sensitive pen input as well... given the rumor of it being a 'creative' device....
@Nitesh
People always scream that they want a lightweight OS. Well, you can't get much lighter than an OS designed for a particular device... ie iPhone OS.
You know how you pick up an iPhone or iPod Touch, and the thing turns on instantly? Or when you click on something and it loads in less than a second? That's why you want software that was written for a specific piece of hardware... everything is built for that environment.
Versus... you pick up a Windows 7 tablet, it's got to boot like a computer, and it's got the huge Windows Registry, drivers and all the other overhead of a full-blown OS. I'm not sure it's a great idea to cram an OS designed for a Quad-Core desktop into a small gadget.
I doubt Apple's tablet will be a keyboard-less Macbook running full OSX. It's probably gonna be a *gadget* that is designed to do certain things... and do those things very well.
Instead of... "let's try to run a full computer using only your finger."
There have always been tablets running full-blown Windows... yet that's not what's gonna cut it in the consumer electronics market.
yeah.. right... multitasking.. it would be bi-tasking first...
@Dking7 bi-tasking curious?
even if it's half of what the rumors are i'm sold. It's gotta beat the kindle as a reader. As long as it has a decent catalog, wifi (I don't care about 3G) on-board storage of books, good web browsing, and some apps it'll be good. I know that's a lot but it's also pretty basic. Oh and the price can't be stratospheric.
@iamlilysdad
Good call, although I would like to see 3G, as there aren't many WiFi spots locally. Maybe take the sim from the iPhone and use it in the tablet.
And how about a SSHD?
nice stuff! can't wait till i know the truth :)
I've said this before - how about a rumor hub? 5 articles on speculation? Little too much I'd say. I love apple devices and events but come on guys...
@DirtyVegas That wouldn't get as many page hits. Although it WOULD be less annoying.
But wouldn't "terrible daylight" reading be right up Apple's ally? Have you ever tried seeing anything on an iPhone's, iTouch's, or Macbook's screen in daylight, before?
You'd have better luck trying to stare straight at the sun on a clear day without squinting.
@Jban ... alley, idiot.
These are not rumors, these are Apple fanboys' wet dreams.
I don't see how daylight view-ability of an OLED screen would prevent tablet use. I have been using a Nexus one and found the daylight issues to be significantly overstated. It is winter and hasn't been the brightest of sunshine, but it was still very usable. Regardless, a tablet of this size isn't going to be something you carry around and whip out on a whim, like a cell phone or PMP. This thing is going to be for cruising the web or watching videos while sitting on your couch, you know inside where the sun can't harm you.
It does not stop coming. And to think all these Bombardments are just based on rumors. GOD Help us when they get officially unveiled, that is if they turn out to even be true. In the event NOT, I hope a section gets created for Unfounded Rumors, sigh
@6746ea09
Good luck with that
Main the hype surrounding this thing is insane, I'm sucked in as well. The 27th needs to hurry up and come around `~`
I hate all these rumours, If we didn't have a constant barrage of people hyping stuff up we would be a lot more 'wowed' by new products and not so impatient: Classic example would be the SE Xperia X10, It was announced In November, and is being released next month or March.
That's not bad at all, really. But people already knew everything a long time before...
I am looking forward the the iPhoneTooBigForMyPocket device from Apple, Just be patient and it will be announce in 1 Week.
@sebmason Did you hear that there's this thing Apple is going to announce next week? I bet ya that it'll have curves.
I say that Apple is going to make a netbook.
@patboy2008
It would be pricey if they made one though
OOOH, and it will have these tentacle-ey things coming out of its back that lets you connect with its neural network, and people are blue and stuff...Wait, what?
My prediction for the Apple event. Steve Job walks on stage, proceeds to take a dump on it, says "look at my latest creation". People will applaud, faint, and cry. Apple fans will line up en masse to get a whiff of the iCrap.
wha happund to the RFID rumors? i want me some rfid baby! all good for swiping credit cards or using it as a credit card. sigh.
