Apple rumor roundup: future of media edition

The rumor: The iPhone Blog points us to a China Times piece setting the tablet's screen size at 9.7 inches. (We covered the 22-inch touchscreen iMac rumor separately.)
Our take: At this point we've heard pretty much every screen size from eight inches to 11, so we're not making a call either way on this one. We will say that the only other product with a 9.7-inch screen we can think of off-hand is the Kindle DX -- a relatively simple device that's still so large and heavy we generally hold it with two hands. Just something to think about.
The rumor: Ars Technica talks to the director of the OLED Association, who rules out a 10.1-inch AMOLED screen by saying "there's no real production of 10.1-inch panels." Oh, and the only place to buy those would be Samsung, really, and Sammy doesn't have the capacity.
Our take: We never thought a 10.1 OLED screen was likely: not only are prices insane, but OLED still has terrible daylight viewing issues. The Ars piece is well worth a read, though -- it's a nice look at the state of OLED.
The rumor: Peter Kafka at All Things Digital rounds up some rumors of his own. He thinks it's a "good bet" the NYT will be involved, but the music industry won't be on board, although Apple is briefing some music execs as a "courtesy." What's more, we'll be hearing a lot about "enhanced e-books," and there's obviously a video component to all of this, potentially with specific Disney involvement, but also potentially with the existing catalog of video in the iTunes store.
Our take: All of this sounds reasonable enough -- although the video situation seems a little more complex, since some HD rentals in the iTunes Store can only be played on the Apple TV, not a Mac or an iPhone, and we all know how much studios like Disney love it when they don't get paid extra for new devices and services. That certainly seems like a big bundle of issues if we're talking about a portable device with a large screen that's focused on media playback, so we'll see how much leverage Steve's managed to exert at the event next week.
The rumor: Boy Genius says he's gotten some info on iPhone OS 4.0, which is doubly intriguing since we've heard it's the basis for the tablet's OS. Highlights: multitasking, new system-wide multitouch gestures, lots of UI changes to make navigation "easier and more efficient," and some sort of new contacts and calendar syncing system. All told, it'll make the iPhone much closer to being a "full-fledged computer." Bad news? 4.0 will be for the iPhone 3G and 3GS only.
Our take: Another perfectly sensible set of rumors, really. Multitasking and UI refinements to handle it seem like a given, and we agree with BGR that new gestures make sense if 4.0 is also being used for the tablet in some way. It also makes sense that the original iPhone won't get this upgrade, at least not for free -- recall that Apple books iPhone revenue over 24 months using subscription accounting in order to dole out free OS upgrades during that time; the first-gen model came out in June of 2007, so the clock's up. Given the basic hardware similarities between the original and 3G, we wouldn't be surprised if Apple sells 4.0 on the side -- or it's hacked. Yeah, it'll be hacked.
Update: One more rumor for you -- MacRumors dug up some evidence that Apple's been registering an "iPad" trademark internationally under a variety of dummy corporations. We've been hearing that name pop up since about August, actually, so we'll see what comes of it -- we think it's way too close to "iPod," but maybe that's actually a good thing in Apple's eyes.
Whew, that's a lot for today. A lot of freaking words -- come on people, we need a photo. We can't keep staring at this lame SIM tray image for eight days, you know? Let's make it happen.

Yawn...so its a tablet
I have not been this excited about an Apple event since the iPhone came out :D
is it just me or does it seem like Apple hired a deviant art 16 y/o with a splatter photoshop brushe set to spit this invite out? I'm an apple fan through and through, but this just looks bad.
Maybe the tablet will have Intel Wireless display with a new line of Apple displays that support it? Then include it in all next gen Mac products!
STOP IT PLS...
It is not an iXxxx, it is the Mac Easel.
Cocoa and touch are converging. They will show roadmap. It is NOT a 4.0 version of the OS.
Book and reader apps will not be accepted on the Easel, but they will continue to be accepted for deployment on the smaller devices - iPhone/iPod.
Books are based on PDF and not ePub. Adobe and Apple together again?
The screen is 10" and has an IFSR overlay. Pressure is the main addition to the UI. Both stylus and fingers work. Basically, it is a wacom tablet without wacom.
Managed multitasking is allowed. The device could always do it, but now it is enabled for developers. Users configure how many apps can run at once. If you allow more, you run the risk of battery drainage.
Apps get a process warning message analogous to the mem warning message. Allows for graceful exit before quitting.
Battery life is not that impressive.
I think it will be a hit critically, but a dud commercially due to the price point. It is too much money for an Atari 400 keyboard experience.
@RealHTInfo
I am a developer but for my personal use, I do not need a full OS but I would pay a premium for a device that does just this.
1. Reads like an eInk display,
2. Browse full page as in real Safari.
3. Plays all media
4. Syncs with iTunes
5. Supports all existing iPhone native apps such as Facebook, ebay, Email, iPod, RSS Readers, etc. and allows me to keep more than one app open and view them in widescreen.
6. Docks in the universal Apple Dock.
7. Allows me to do a web chat.
A built-in phone is not required.
I think all this is doable with the technology that we have.
I don' t think there is a huge market for this device yet. There is a small market for it but, it is growing fast and such a device will be omipresent in future just as PCs are today. It will not replace PCs but it will do what PCs cannot do so well such as reading a book with embedded video or surf the web with your fingers instead of a mouse and read all of Endaget's articles published today, without burning your eyes.
Technology exists, market also exists in it's infancy .. all we now need is a man who can take advantage of it. Steve Jobs may not set the stage on fire on 27th but rest assured, he will change the market for wireless device once again ad he did with iPhone. Only difference this time will be that it will be a slow change and not as explosive as iPhone has been.
Short AAPL please .. that would give me a chance to buy in.
I wonder what the collective sight will sound like on 27th when apple will release aperture 3.0 instead of ipad.
Will it show on world airpressure sensors as people stop holding their breath?
aperture 2.0 was released 2 years after 1.0, and its now 2 years from the release of 2.0. Also the invitation picture and 'creation' point to some kind of paint program.
Here is a picture you can use for the next few days.

I feel like iPad is too much like iPod anyway...
Have there been any production eInk tablets in color?
Could explain the colorful background.
New Name?
I think with this event announcement we have a hint of its new name.
Let me be a prophet: I think it will be called the "iCreation."
Apple please stop making more iWhatever...
It's so boring.
Talk about "creation".
I guess I better chime in on these rumors... I'm not feeling the new iPhone OS 4.0 sans new hardware rumors I'm hearing a lot all of a sudden. I feel as though they never had a hardware update since the first iPhone in 2007, metal to plastic and small feature updates inside does not equal a "new hardware" to me, sorry.
Anyone hear anything about an iPhone in HD????
Apple needs to pick up the ball that Google dropped regarding multi carrier compatibility. Both CDMA and GSM may be too much to ask for. The nexus one tragedy got me sober about subsidies, Apple needs to offer me a 3G drink that I can have at the tmobile bar!
I can't wait to see this
Seen the invitation can be described as paint stains, I am guessing there is a new app on the tablet to make paintings. Especially with the late stylo patent. Imagine, using you fingers to zoom in to make extra details in an area, of course an digital paint tablet.... overlay with the camera on the back site, to see if you're accurate enough...
Would be great!
SLATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS!!!
