IN A WORLD where no Nook has fully cooked software...
ONE MAN seeks an update for his reader...
THIS WEEKEND could be the end to glitchy UI...
WHAT WILL IT TAKE for Barnes and Noble to issue software that works?
Starring Harrison Ford as Clancycoop
and
Meg Ryan as Joshua Topolsky
Kidding Josh...
@Clancycoop THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
If it removes the massive lag from the menus and the device as a whole, I may actually consider getting one. As nice a concept as it is, the menus beyond the main page are ugly as sin, the UI is glitchy, and in the year 2010, there is no reason a device as simple as the Nook should run slower than my palm tungsten.
@jareth86 As an owner, with 1.2 the menus beyond the main one get updated to a more 3D feel, and they look great! However, they did add some transitions to the menus, but they feel smooth and I like them much more than watching the old menus stumble. Also, the whole device feels quite a bit faster.
Unintended Action Shot!
Maybe this will fix the fantastic bug where all of your bookmarks get deleted randomly when you wake it up.
I LOVE when that happens and i'm 200 pages into a book on a device where you can't "go to page X"
@subtex IMHO They should just fix the "go to page X" problem. That's my least favorite nook quirk.
Looks like some users are getting the update now. See Nook Help Boards for more info.
I was pretty surprised to find my Nook was updated while I was sleeping. The UI look and feel is updated. Formatting books is slower, but everything else is faster, go figure.
@ZaneyGuy
The whole "formatting" nonsense needs to go away too. Just cache the paginated book for every title on the device. If my 10 year old Palm PDA can do this in eReader, there's no reason my Nook can't.
@subtex Hold on I'm eating my words, mouth is very full. The book are loading lighting fast. Books I previously was afraid to open, or would restart the Nook prior to opening, are now opening before I can even set the device down. Changing font size in said book also happens very fast. I repeat.... very very fast. Interesting.
i got the update and installed it. major things i noticed? icons on the color screen are different and menus load a lot faster. formatting of the book still takes forever. Here's a link to the download if anyone didn't get the email http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/support/index.asp?r=1&cm_mmc=Targeted-_-Misc-_-100205_MI01_nookSoftwareUpdate-_-na&cds2Pid=30195
I selected "Check for new B&N content" and it downloaded the new firmware. This work for anyone else?
Well I'll be downgrading back to 1.1.1. The menu was much nicer then, and just as fast as it is on 1.2, but the major reason why is because every time I go to "My Documents", where the majority of my books are, it takes me back to my home screen. Crap update.
@lllisa1 Does anyone know how to downgrade to 1.1.1 or where I can find it to download lol?
@lllisa1 http://nookdevs.com/Main_Page, you should be able to find info how to do that here.
I would have liked to see them improve the actual reading experience before they updated the UI. It still takes too long to load up a book--longer, I think, than the previous version. I'd also have liked to see improved page turning.
I have a Nook, and the upgrade is great! It has a refreshed (not quite new interface), it feels much faster, you can finally set the clock, and (even though I have not tested the following ones) battery life and bookmarks have been fixed!
anyone notice u get a page turn by swiping either side of the nook symbol at top of touchscreen area? it's not consistent. sometimes i gotta double-swipe but when i do it either direction a usually get a page turn. don't remember seeing this listed as a feature but it's cool. would be cooler if it wasn't so glitchy.
@nugo and it only seems to work when the touchscreen goes blank.
