iPad SDK 3.2 beta 4 squashes rumors of a camera, but adds new gesture controls
There's only about a month to go before Apple drops the iPad on the world, and it looks like all those theories about a last-minute camera addition were just fond fanboy wishes -- iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 just came out, and in addition to stripping out several video-call related icons, we've been told the docs contain this little tidbit about that Camera tab:
[Thanks, Anonymous]
So much for that, then. In the meantime, we also have some good news -- 9to5 Mac did some digging and found some files indicating that Apple's opening up some new gestures to app developers, namely the long tap currently used to pop up the copy / paste menu and the triple-tap used to flip the display on and off when using VoiceOver. It's a small consolation, to be sure, but at least the iPad, will, um, be a great game machine, right?Launching the Photos application under the iPad Simulator will initially show three tabs: Photos, Albums, and Camera. The Camera tab represents photos available via the Camera Connection Kit for iPad, and is not relevant for the Simulator. The Camera tab will disappear after a few seconds.

Just what we needed Apple
God I hope Apple got patents for those new gestures, wouldn't want someone to steal them!
@Edmunn: Agreed. Apple > Gestures > So Much Win.
@Edmunn
I know right just what we need more patents :)
@Ariel Bender Yeah - then they could sue Palm for WebOS!! Wait...
@treats Hey treats we can see your fanboism
@angermeans
As I respond to you on my macbook pro.
@treats You mean that you are unbiased and not starting a flamewar?! Begone heathen!
I really hope you aren't lying about the MBP, that would cut deep...
@treats Agree
Yay! Gesture controls!
@furquanatique
I LOL'ed at your comment.
Thank you
@Darkroom
Hmm.... longpress is an Android command.. If I was Google I would sue.
@Mrwirez Wow goodle must of invented that way back in 2007 huh. It has been around for a long time
@Mrwirez
longpress is a windows mobile command. Has been there ever since, at least, winmo 5.
Anybody who is planning on bitching about this article, this link is for you:

@Jack Thanks for putting that up. People seem to just want to bitch. If they dont care to get the iPad then SHUT UP
I've got a gesture for ya!
This would be funnier in person, I swear.
@flextopia
did you mean this .l.. ??
@njsrikar No, I meant what I meant and that's what I meant. I'm a 1920s gangster you seeeee.
I'm going to be that guy:
Microsoft Courier. End of story.
@andthemaniam
What does that have to do with Apple guestures?
@Yoda
Well, guestures is a fun game. However, I meant gestures.
@andthemaniam Hey dude, I like the Courier as much as the next guy, but Microsoft is taking their sweet time with that thing.
And I know there's gonna be a flamewar here, but I have an inquiry: why does the majority of Engadget commentators like to pull Colosseum on all these devices? iPad kills this, Courier kills that. Apple kills this, HTC kills that. kill, kill, kill. It's getting annoying.
@N900
They feel the need to have something winning at all times. A completely ridiculous notion, on the whole.
@N900
I feel it's more that Microsoft is listening to what its customers want (because now they have to) and Apple is a bit less so (because everyone will buy whatever they make regardless).
@Yoda Yeah, I have no quarrel against competing devices. I did make a lot of jokes about the iPad and shown some criticism, but I took a look at the other side of the spectrum, and I think it's pretty good for what it does. Competition is good and will lead to better products in the end. So if MS does come out with a Courier, I hope it doesn't get that unnecessary "killer" moniker like so many recent touchscreen devices have.
@N900
Looks like you are enlightened and attained gadget nirvana
@andthemaniam
Yeah? You wait 12 months then. You're such a savvy consumer!
@njsrikar Nah, I still got a bit of fanboy in me =P. I just don't like it when phrases like "iphone killer" are whisked around all the time.
@pukerocket
Right - since the iPad came out so quickly after it's rumors surfaced...
P.S. Q3/4 is not 12 months away :)
@Phenom
No idea what you're on about. My point was that there's so many people think they're being clever and 'tech savvy' by saying they're gonna wait and wait before buying a new product.
What they basically mean is "I'm too skint to buy one now"
@pukerocket
yea man, I should totally buy both, that's the best idea.
My original comment comes off as flamebait, but I didn't intend it to. I'm just pumped for the Courier and I realize the two devices are after two different markets, so if you're into the iPad, go for it, I'm just not.
@andthemaniam I can't help thinking that other than the foldable thing, the functionality shown of the Courier (just talking about what is shown) could probably be done in a cleverly written iPad or presumably Android tablet app. If the Courier itself never materializes, Microsoft will probably add similar functionality- just with a "standard" tablet form factor (among other more mainstream functions).
@andthemaniam
Yeah, fictional hardware is awesome.
@Jack
The iPad was vaporware until a couple months ago :D
@andthemaniam
What's your point? The Courier still doesn't exist. So saying it's the "end of story" means that you either have access to a time machine, or you are talking out your ass.
@Jack
Can't it be both?
@andthemaniam
No, because if you had a time machine, you wouldn't be talking out your ass. You also probably wouldn't be posting on Engadget.
@andthemaniam
You must have a very different definition of vaporware to me. If the iPad was vaporware two months ago (when we hadn't even had it officially confirmed, let alone named or marketed), then that would surely make the Courier science fiction right now?
Yay.
I don't get why people don't like pinch to zoom around here, and prefer to double tap. It's just more fluid to me.
@Yoda Double tap tends to snap the view around a piece of text on a news article or a table of results (sporting or business), yes pinch is more fluid but double tap is quicker.
@d0mth0ma5
The iPhone and iPad do BOTH. And the problem with double tap is that you have zero granular control. When you're in a maps app or looking at pictures, you want better control over how far you're zooming in.
@Jack I know, I certainly wouldn't want one or the other. But I do have a preference between the two as I look at articles more often than maps and pictures.
@d0mth0ma5 Having the option to do both is nice. I'll double tap for articles but when it comes down to pics and the map it's all about pinch to zoom.
@leykis101
I'm not saying it will be unsuccessful, but 3 million in a month is a bit of a stretch. Maybe 30,000...
@leykis101
Did you type that on an iPad? 'Cause your spelling sucks.
@leykis101 Truth, they keep banning for a reason. Stop pouring gasoline on the flames.
Look, a list of new Apple patents!
@leykis101 Looking at your profile and reading all of your comments makes me want to vomit. You're a terrible person. Just truly terrible.
@sodaboy581
Wow that really is painful to read.
