iPad SDK 3.2 beta 4 squashes rumors of a camera, but adds new gesture controls
There's only about a month to go before Apple drops the iPad on the world, and it looks like all those theories about a last-minute camera addition were just fond fanboy wishes -- iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 just came out, and in addition to stripping out several video-call related icons, we've been told the docs contain this little tidbit about that Camera tab:

So much for that, then. In the meantime, we also have some good news -- 9to5 Mac did some digging and found some files indicating that Apple's opening up some new gestures to app developers, namely the long tap currently used to pop up the copy / paste menu and the triple-tap used to flip the display on and off when using VoiceOver. It's a small consolation, to be sure, but at least the iPad, will, um, be a great game machine, right?Launching the Photos application under the iPad Simulator will initially show three tabs: Photos, Albums, and Camera. The Camera tab represents photos available via the Camera Connection Kit for iPad, and is not relevant for the Simulator. The Camera tab will disappear after a few seconds.

I just want my Engadget app for Android!
@ashleythehottiest
because clearly the comments section of an article about the iPad SDK is the best place to post that.
@ashleythehottiest Get a real phone like an iPhone then!!!
@Mtmrob There's an app for that.
How did it manage to become even less useful?
"but at least the iPad, will, um, be a great game machine, right?"
so the engadget writers have succumbed to the pressure and r writing to please the haters, pathetic....
The only one I see hating is you dumbass
@to86
It's quite sad really, the massive about-turn they've all made the last few weeks. Kinda feel sorry for them, they're so scared of alienating the vocal minority.
Oh you guys are taking this with a grain of salt. How's this any different than the jokes and sarcasm they put in numerous other articles?
"WD's 320GB My Passport AV external HDD wants to have and hold your media..If you're in complete opposition (it's cool... really), it's available to order today for $109.99. "
"Razer promises Mac support for all upcoming products...First Steam, now Razer peripherals -- dare we say it's a good time to be a Mac gamer? "
"Google Maps adds bicycle directions, turns out its nothing like 'Quicksilver'...while available on the web, those using a Google Maps smartphone app are being excluded for the time being. So much for "mobile first," guys."
@pukerocket It is all based on rumours, conjecture, "analysts" and the occasional 5/10 minutes of looking at a non-release version of the iPad. Why would there be a camera in this version of the iPad, that would be one less improvement to put in the iPad 2.0/3.0/4.0 in any case it will probably sell well despite the flaws that are being talked about, continuously.
@N900
The difference is we know all Engadget writers LOVE the Ipad and can't wait to get their hands on one, but they're not allowed to big it up like they used to, since they had that team meeting where they all got sat down and told to calm down a bit and be more impartial, and give some other products some of the spotlight.
@leykis101 Since when did Dara O'Briain start working for AT&T
@ Yoda Maybe 300,000 worldwide, so add together the 1st month figures of the major markets, its all guesswork though. By comparison, iPhone 3G sold 1,000,000 in 3 days and did hit the 3,000,000 in a month, but the iPad probably(!) wont hit anywhere near that (at first).
@sodaboy581 Wow...that was not a pleasant read.
@ leykis101 If you are going to troll, learn to spell, then you can get a job that keeps you too busy to troll.
Of course they removed the video references. It was only put in beta 3 to start rumors and talk of this stupid iPad thing which being a Apple fan even i dont like.
@HighestRanked2 why else would they? If they wanted the secret not to be out they would of made sure it wasnt in beta 3.
Oh but your right it didnt start THAT much talk http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=video+support+icons+ipad
@HighestRanked2 i couldn't care less about grammer and spelling quite honestly.
I not going to bother asking because all opinions to each of their own at the end of the day.
I am simply saying in my opinion ... Apple left those video recording in the beta 3 iPad SDK (who cares if it came from the iPhone SDK) ... for people to find and start blogging and generating talk about the iPad. So one of these "controlled leaks" we hear about.
Point is if they wanted to keep something hidden like the video recording icons and in such secrecy they would of made sure it was left out of Beta 3.
But they didn't.
Now beta 4 and its well gone ... oh well Apple must of been so so forgetful with Beta 3.
Anyway i gunna leave it here and i will let you spend the time to point out my gramare and speing errers
You guys are really behind...the gesture recognizers have been in the documentation since the 3.2 SDK was released.
@mattguthmiller I thought that these were extra gesture controls that had been added to the ones in 3.2
WAIT A MINUTE!
That documetnation SCREAMS out "Camera on iPad!". Why in the WORLD does the author think "no camera in simulator" means "no camera in iPad!"
Good grief - of COURSE the camera page is irrelevant to the =simulator=.
Sheesh.
Can they patent the word patent and then the whole process of filing for a patent?
@southern78 Doesn't Xerox already have that one...

....etc
do you really believe your beloved google doesnt get involved in its share of patent disputes to protect their IP.
Protecting your property is a right. If you disagree please remember that the next time a thief makes off with your TV or cc numbers.
Your only pissed off because you are benifiting from the theft.
@leykis101 Why didn't you just post this comment earlier instead of the bullshit about selling 3,000,000 units in a month. I'm a fan of what i've seen from the iPad so far, the flaws you've mentioned probably won't effect me that much when I come to chose whether to buy it. But I wouldn't call the iPad "revolutionary", it is probably more accurate to call its "evolutionary" and a step up from the iPod Touch thats not a bad thing either it just isn't a game changer, in my opinion.
Definitely no camera? Then definitely no sale.
i really want an ipad but i think without the camera i'll sit out this first gen.
Yeah, get an iPod touch or wait next gen. Next gen ipad iPhone and iPod touch should be amazing
Is anyone looking to buy an ipad? I mean really...
And obviously apple will remove any clues people think they may have found about future updates. God, apple wouldn't put anything in there if they didn't want us to see it. It's not like it was an accident and are now correcting it...
@The Madman hahahahah. I kind of want an ipad because it is good for what it's worth. An Internet viewer and awsome gaming device. (not a computer) but that was funny=) I actually really want to see what typing is like on the ipad.
*sigh* there goes any hope of me buying the first gen iPad. No camera = no deal. It was to be a gift for my mother, who would need video conferencing via Skype. This is made all the worse by the fact that my mother, a complete no-hope with technology, quite out-of-the-blue took a newspaper cutting of Jobs holding up the iPad when it was first announced. She had a face so full of wonderment I thought, if this thing's got a camera, i'm on easy street for the rest of my life when I buy her one.
Bah!
@The Madman You guys DO realize he isn't a real Apple fan right? He like many others just say these things to incite gullable people who are anti-Apple to say dergatory things about Apple products which would then possibly start a flame war in the comments of any Apple related post destroying any chance of having a real objective exchange in the comment section of any Apple related post... *sigh* I weep for what could be.
