Make your Magic Mouse oh-so-ergonomic with this pasty silicone grip
While it's hard to say if Apple's Magic Mouse really needs "fixing" -- it depends somewhat on your grip -- it's not a huge stretch to say that the slender multitouch device doesn't quite fit in the palm of one's hand. Sensing a market opportunity, Will of MMFixed.com recently decided to come to our collective rescue. For $10, he offers a simple silicone block that matches the mouse's contoured surface nicely, with an integrated suction cup that keeps it securely fastened. While it's not quite a one-size-fits-all solution, it's certainly a lot cheaper than buying one of the new whacky, adjustable mice we've seen recently; and if the idea of ergonomics via marshmallow doesn't appeal to you, you can always try the white bread variety. Video after the break.

Now we just need a black magic mouse and we can make smores!
@Commodorksixtyfork *Hijacked*
Is that a bar of soap?
@Commodorksixtyfork
Nah, we need a mouse you can Pump Up to a custom size, like those Reebok™ shoes. The Mighty Mouse Pump™. You heard it here first.
@Commodorksixtyfork
funny how people would rather keep a "broken" Apple product and try and "fix" it than just get a better one from somewhere else
@Saad the other one
aaaand who makes a competing multitouch / surface mouse?
@eli Nobody who understands you can put the words efficiency, ergonomics and mouse into the same sentence.
@Blackstar
Brilliant!
Honestly, I don't spend much time with my hand on my mouse anyway. Macs are pretty well stocked with keyboard shortcuts that I find much faster than mousing around. I've had a Bluetooth mighty mouse for years and have never suffered any hand strain. Then again, I'm on a MacBook and as far as I'm concerned anything is better than a trackpad, even one with magical multitouch capabilities.
@Commodorksixtyfork The only real problem and why I wouldn't buy this is because it doesn't have middle click. How am I supposed to open links in another tab in one button press?
"whacky" or "wacky? "
@aubreyq hwacky?
@aubreyq cool wHip :)
@aubreyq
The safe word will be Hwisky.
...
Hwy am I saying Hwat Hweird??
apple should just stop making peripherals entirely
@grumbles Why? I absolutley love my magic mouse. Egonimically, it feels fine, and the gesture control is a real nice touch. Best mouse I've ever had.
@Colrath
obviously never owned a logitech mx1000 then.
@Colrath the only people that love the mighty mice are the ones who have never used non-apple mice.
@willyolio Thanks for trolling. The touch gestures on the Magic Mouse are a welcome variation from typical mice. It's certainly not for everyone, but neither is the Logitech mx1000. Myself, I absolutely love the touch gestures, much more than having a dozen buttons on a mouse.
@willyolio
Wow.. The RDS has pain killing as well as reality killing properties.
Posted from my Linux computer with an MX revolution.
@MostWanted Why say it's crap? I don't think it is and I have both Logitech and Apple mice... I love the magic mouse tbh.
@MostWanted Im not sure I fully understand, because I like the magic mouse, I'm suddenly a fanboy and I should hate it to make you happy?it's a good mouse, I like it and don't intend to throw away and spend more money because someone told me I shouldn't like it.
@Colrath
You are being treated a bit harshly here. If you like the Magic Mouse that's fine, personal choice is great.
It's just that about 95% of people who use it end up throwing it in a sock drawer and using a Logitech instead.
@grumbles Correction: They should stop making mice entirely. I like their keyboards and screens, for example (overpriced as they may be)
@MarkAnderson 95% of the engadget community, you mean. When my boss decided to get a 27" iMac for his office, and replace a couple of headless clients, he said he would never give up his mouse that he thought was irreplacable, and said he would just give it to me. Just set up a second 27" iMac for him at his house, and still no mouse was in my hands. He offered me his old mouse. After I got my own, all my friends who critisied me got to try it out, and realized they were ceitisizing me for no reason. It's a good quality mouse, that feels comfortable, is accurate, and does the job. Anyone who thinks it's a crappy mouse probably hasn't even gotten their hands on one.
@Colrath "95% of the engadget community you mean" LOL, perfectly put! Anything apple related will try and be berated on these forums, and unfortunately the writers have realised that and the articles appear to be geared towards these morons.
I won't pretend to have owned one, although I have used one plenty of times while at an apple store and at friends' place. As always these idiots don't understand the concept of an apple product. They forget that the whole point of this mouse is multitouch which works incredibly well. Yea the design is different but it feels perfectly fine, just coz the design moves away from the normal mine, doesn't suddenly make it crap. As always the nerds on here are not totally happy, because firstly there aren't enough bullet point on that feature list, and secondly because it's made by apple...pathetic
@Colrath
Fair enough. Everyone - and I mean everyone - I know who has tried it hates it though.
@to86
Did you have a point to make or is it just puberty hitting you particularly hard?
@Colrath I agree. It looks uncomfortable, but it really isn't. I use one for hours everyday and love it. I replaced my Logitech MX Revolution because it was messing up, I don't miss it at all.
Best mouse you've ever had. Really? Sure it's got some cool features, but I've actually found I prefer the tactile feedback of a wheel. Not only that but the advanced gestures are just a pain in the a$$ - I don't even use 'em. I suggest you try a basic no frills Microsoft or Logitech mouse with a wheel.
@MrJimlad I actually own both and by default use MightyMouse with my 27" iMac for browsing and such.
However, whenever I have to do something that require precision and is mouse-time consuming, I grab my trusty MX.
@eddie68
I meant Magic Mouse... I also had Apple's Mighty Mouse, but just never used it...
@MrJimlad Don't even talk about MX1000.
God damn that mouse was great. Ergonomically it's best mouse i have ever used and in 3 years time of using it i can in all honestly say that it never had any lack or cutoffs(MX1000 was wireless mouse to those who don't know).
My MX revolution is as good with the better buttons and amazing scroll wheel. I have owned it a year and have had couple 1 sec cutoffs while nothing bad it still reminds you about it being wireless while MX1000 you totally forgot that.
Magic Mouse is okish, but imo it's more about the cool factor than being ergonomic and great scrollwheel like on MX revolution will beat the touch sensitive feature anyday.
@MarkAnderson 95%? where are you getting that number from? care to share some reference? from personal experience of having used BOTH the MX-series mice and the magic mouse, I have to say that i LOVE all the gesture stuff I can do with the mighty mouse. it's super responsive and I love not having buttons on the mouse.
Everyone has their tastes and both mice are great, but don't make up stuff to try to make your point. It only weakens your argument.
@digitalgopher Defienetly true and as long as you are using OSX magic mouse it's always a contender.
Just wanna point out that there's world of difference with the MX series mouses too. There's big difference with Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX, MX518 or MX revlotion that i have onwed/own. MX Revolution being by far the best.
@Eruanno yeah - I have Apple keyboard (latest sort because I kept breaking the older ones by spilling water on them), it's fine... and a Microsoft mouse. (An old one from before they started including stupid side buttons you click accidentally.)
MS mouse is a classic IMO - I'm sure there are others just as good (Logitech etc) but really this is something that doesn't need improving, let alone making worse (hello Apple). I hope this mouse lasts, if I need to get a replacement I'm not sure they still sell 'em without the extra buttons... (yes I know you can turn them off but).
@grumbles: Why? Not all of us like bulky mice. I like Apple's mouse because it's one of the few that I can manipulate with my fingers without having it touch my palm. That's important when I need to be able to select a single pixel on screen without requiring a slow tracking speed. Not everyone uses their mouse in the same way.
@George
'Everyone I know' isn't a claim to having scientific evidence, chief.
My mamba fits my hand nicely straight out of the box... but for $140 it had better.
Why does apple consistently overlook ergonomics over style when designing their mice?
@ECH because this is Apple = Jobs
@ECH
Can't the same be asked of any Apple product? The Macbook Pros cut into your freaking palms at times...
Although their touchpads and keyboards are quite nice and the iPhone is okay as well. (I own all of these, eg Macbook Pro and iPhone, as disclaimer)
Sent from my PC.
@ECH
The only problem with the Mamba, is reliability, razor replaced mine 3 times before I gave up a got a logitech.
The magic mouse is almost as useless as the mighty mouse, it's one of those things you'd buy for a show room, or to use in a film.. As it looks cool.. Functionaliy is nil..
@ECH
i like my G5, best mouse i could ever hope to buy for 40 dollars on sale!
and i can make it heavier or lighter!
@insy
Mine has been flawless so far, best mouse I've ever used. I first bought an mx1100 to replace my g7 that was getting interference from Bluetooth devices running nearby, but the mx1100 was extremely laggy when making small movements. I loved by g7, but I love my Mamba waaaaay more. Perfect ergonomics, and simply beautiful design.
Crapgadget .. !
@Eastman
Which one?
ha ha ha!!! Oh mac, sometimes you're so progressive, that you redefine which way progress should go... years of trying to make a comfortable mouse ruined by the desire for a slick look...
I don't need that block. the mouse is pretty comfortable as is!
although it would be fun to be able to use gestures on a windows 7 computer with it.
From its name to its use: Ridiculous.
My friend got it as a gift and for the past 2 weeks it has been passing through everyone of my friends' hands, testing it for an hour then throwing it aside afterwards. IMO, Nothing beats the Microsoft line of mouses with the BlueTrack technology; feels right in the hand and works perfectly precise on any surface. :)
@Saad
LOL. Microsoft has never made decent hardware. Probably never will.
I have a magic mouse. My previous mouse was an MX Revolution and I still have a VX Revolution for laptop use, so I have plenty of reference for comparison. The magic mouse is more of a finger mouse, so you don't really rest your palm on it. There's really no call for the hate-on. Personally I rather like the gestures as substitute for the scroll wheel and side buttons. That being said, I would also never use the magic mouse for any serious amount of gaming.
@tzuge
Thank you! There's no need for that hate! I agree that it is not quite suited to gaming, although I can't quite point out why; Probably because of the right click. I used to use the Apple Wireless Mouse to play World of Warcraft. At first I had problems with it, but I somehow managed it. Definitely wouldn't use it for something more intensive though.
@tzuge Can I have your MX Revolution then, since you're obviously not using it :D
