CE-Oh no he didn't!: Nokia's Anssi Vanjoki thinks cameraphones are about to make SLRs obsolete
From what we know of Anssi Vanjoki, he's a great guy and one that isn't afraid of admitting his company's mistakes. Alas, now we can also add to that dossier the ignominious fact that the fella doesn't seem to know how professional cameras work. Talking about the rapid improvement in cameraphone technology during a speech in Helsinki yesterday, Vanjoki said that very soon "there will be no need to carry around those heavy lenses." He's really enthusiastic about HD video coming to phones, which he predicts will be here within 12 months (if you ask Sony Ericsson, it's here already), but we just can't let that spectacular line about lenses slide. The glass you shoot through is, for a lot of people, the most important piece of photographic equipment and there are genuine reasons why said lenses are heavy, elongated, and typically unfriendly to pockets. Then again, this dude also thought the N-Gage was gonna be a success, so don't start selling off that glass stockpile just yet.

Cold blooded dumb shit!
@Chuuchdizzle Are we taking this too far? Would this be akin to saying our cellphones will make mp3/PMPs obsolete? Meaning, they'll still sell, but are just replaceable to everyone who isn't really an enthusiast?
Well, to criticize the point I just made, I think people who buy SLRs are enthusiasts. And the amount of technology required to even catch up to SLRs from the angles, to the zooms, to everything else; even if SLRs didn't evolve at all is asking a little much. But, I think this doesn't much deserve an article.
Again, I'm mostly comparing this to mp3s and obviously, the tech makes it possible that companies are just skimping on when making phones as good as PMP, which isn't the case of this. But, it just isn't "THAT" far off...eh, maybe it is.
@Chuuchdizzle Indeed... This is totally ludicrous.
But Engadget doesnt seem to mention all the sh1t Steve Jobs said about multitasking. He is totally untouched here even with the amount of stupid stuff that he said about Apple being the biggest mobile company in the world and other more stupid quotes.
Here is my quote: "Either Engadget has Europe envy or they are Apple fanboys"... that what I think. When I become CE-OH I wish they will remember this.
@Mr w00t You haters are amazing! Nowhere in that article is Apple mentioned but still u manage to drag SJ into your completely unrelated-to-the-article rant.
And i sincerely doubt that you'd make CEO someday.
@Chuuchdizzle
As dumb as Steve Jobs comment about stylus or pen being obsolete.. Perhaps even dumber than that.. :D
What will we get next, Ballamer sayin Zune HD games will make consoles obsolete?? :D
@Mr w00t
Seriously, you haters have such a giant stick up your butt, you're still whining about Apple stuff in a completely unrelated article. Do you think it's healthy for you to be obsessing over a company so much? What the hell are you so mad about? Go live your life and relax.
@DarkGrimoire
Yes, very dumb. Just look at those stupid iPhone and Android phones with their dumb touch interfaces. Those'll never take over the market. Utter failures, the lot of them.
moron.
@juanvaldez
No, this would be someone saying that watching movies on the screen of a phone will make cinemas obsolete. The problem is not in the programming or electronics departement but in the tiny lens. It is impossible to manufacture a lens the size of a fingernail to match the quality of an SLR lens. Small digital cameras have already made DSLRs obsolete for those who just snap random images.
@WhatsThatSmell
Sorry I said bad stuff about your God... Tell him that I apologize.
About becoming a CEO, if a fucked up hippie that left school and took loads of acid made Apple I still have a shot.
@tonicboy
Stick in my butt? You know that if you would have left the personal offense out of your sentence you would be much more respected and convincing? Make me remember when I was 17 years old trying to hang around with older people.
For you might not be a valid concern, for me it is and if you are entitled to your opinion so am I. I can live with the "hater" tag, but can you admit that you are a fanboy?
@WhatsThatSmell
Just coz they are not used on smart-phones does not make stylus or pen obsolete. Do you think digital artists use fingerprinting to create their artworks? Tell that to the Wacom people too..
Please read and think before you go out on some stupid 'I'll be first to respond' rant...
@Chuuchdizzle
If he's referring to those consumers who get sucked into buying that uber high end DSLR because a Future Shop employee told them to for the commission, maybe. I can see cameraphones closing up to point and shoots that they buy after returing the DSLR, but professionals and true enthusiasts with their DSLRs, not so much.
@DarkGrimoire
Steve Jobs made that statement as it pertains to the mobile devices market - which should be obvious to everyone but brain-dead haters like you.
This is a comment section for a Nokia article. Stay on topic or GTFO. There are plenty of Apple articles where you can get your Apple-bashing fix. Damn trolls are everywhere.
@WhatsThatSmell
Well Tablet PCs are mobile devices aren't they? Designers need pens for their paint programs in them. For sketching on the go. Moreover, I only said the statement was as dumb, nothing against Apple. Sorry if I offended u or ur father Steve Jobs.
@Mr w00t
So posting obviously trollish comments makes you more respective and convincing?
And what was your "valid concern" cuz i seem to have missed it. If you are referring to a CEO of a major corporation making hyped up statements advancing his own company's agenda. It's called salesmanship and if a CEO does not practice that what good is he?
Yep i'm an Apple fan. Being FOR something is loads better than being irrationally AGAINST something. Haters are just sad, sad people.
@Mr w00t
Where was Apple mentioned in the article, I swear these ABA (Anything But Apple) crew can't sleep without dreaming about Apple. Apple's success is adding so much to their stress to their lives.
@Mr w00t
By the way what did Steve Jobs say about multitasking, I want the exact quotes?
@WhatsThatSmell
Don't mind that dude, Apple's success is just haunting him, nowhere in the article was Apple mentioned but he somehow still has to go on a silly rant about Apple and he gets upranked for his stupidity.
@tonicboy
They are so obssesed with Apple its not even funny anymore.
@Chuuchdizzle SLRs getting replaced by cameraphones? yeah and i can divide by zero
@Chuuchdizzle
I think the point of the comment wasn't a knock on Apple but a comment on double standards. Yes Engadget rakes dumb CEO's across the coals (or it's posters do) when they say something stupid, but if it's someone popular at the moment like Mr. Jobs they seem to get a free pass. He's certainly not innocent of making dumb comments about technology over the years. Or perhaps everyone is forgetting about the comments he made about the Hi-Fi....
@admlshake
I dunno about that. Engadget's posted it's fair share of snarky articles regarding Apple.
All CEOs make stupid comments from time to time. None of them are immune to this - as evidenced by this article.
@WhatsThatSmell
Let them believe what they want to believe.
Alright already... enough with the CE-Oh no he didn't!.... Come up with something different already like... CE-Oh Snap!
@GadgetGeeks
+1

Steve Jobs Reiterates: “Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone”

@Kwame Nkrumah
I am not obsessed with Apple, I just would like to see Engadget being more partial. The problem is that in your little head just Apple is perfect.
And if I am "jealous" of Apple you must be jealous that people upranked me... I dont give a sh!t if someone down ranks me or not but for you is clearly important.
You know what? If I could I would transfer all my "uprankings" to you so you could be happy.
For me it is pitiful to see a grown up, I am assuming you are more than 17, drinking the words of Steve Jobs like he is the next messiah. But I know your type, you must be one of those pain in the ass guys that no one likes to hang around with you cos you just talk about Apple and iPhone... Fret not my fanboy brother, you will have an iPad and you can throw a little tea party together with them.
About the quotes it is hard to get something out of "great, amazing, awesome, incredible" but here it is:
"It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it."

See you later Apple dude...
@Stiksi Well, I'm sure one day heavy glass lenses will be made obsolete possibly by an array of tiny lenses and insane sensor resolution or force fields, but probably not in the next 10 years and probably not by Nokia. There's a reason I carry around my 100-400mm 4L lens, and this CEO probably has no clue what he's talking about :)
@Mr w00t
Mr w00t i am with you on this one.. Why other CEOs get their own "stupid" quote article but Mr. Jobs doesn't. Also i notice after the new iPhone Engadget unfortunately has attracted iDiots and iSheeps from the iGnorantus species. Instead of making a discussion they are ready for flaming and insulting.
Can we have an explanation why Jobs didn't get an article about he last keynote that he told, stylus and task manager is reason for failure (although iPhone OS 4 has task manager) and also that android is for porn ???
@Mr w00t
Keep living in la la land, get off Apple and Steve Job's nuts, there's a whole other world out there.
@Chuuchdizzle
There really is no need for big lenses (except superzoom maybe) anymore. Prosumer cameras ought to be good enough for everyone, they can have lenses for those who really need them. The sooner people drop unnecessarily expensive hobbies the sooner they can spend it on something useful, and the world's economies can shake off the excess fat and start recovering. Not that I know much about this sort of thing.
/trolling, but only partially
@Kwame Nkrumah So I found your quotes and that is the response I get? Meh, you are not a true fanboy... Maybe a KIRFed fanboy from Shanghai...
About me getting off Steve's nuts.. Sure I can do that, right after you let it go from his ass... Cos I bet that if I kick Steve in the ass I will hit your mouth first.
@Mr w00t
Awesome quotes.
The only person here who is on Apple's junk is Kwame. Take a look at his join date and post history. 100% defending iPad and Apple related news? I think so.
@Mr w00t
What does this topic have to do with Steve Jobs and Apple jackass? Damn its like this dudes can't use their brains to think.
@(Unverified)
Damn stop following me around this goddamn blog, get of my sh!t.
@Kwame Nkrumah
Nah, you keep posting garbage anti-nonApple posts, I'll keep pointing out you are just a rabid misinformed fanboy who feels the need to call everyone dumb for not blindly following all things cupertino.
total dumb ass! I been using Nikon D3S and no way in hell phone camera can come even close. Does he ever used a decent SLR?
@Kwame Nkrumah
Kwame, come on now. You are a rabid fanboy and you know it! ;) Sure the remark by Vanjoki is a stretch, but just because Mr W00t points out that the Apple reality distortion field has also reached engadget, does not make him obsessed or anything like that.
Actually, what he says makes sense. Saying camera phones will render SLR's obsolete might actually be possible, at least for a part of its userbase in the short run. Maybe not everyone, not the professionals. But, is such a remark really more crazy than saying, " It is magical " or "reinventing" every other thing or like that. I like Apple, use a Mac Book Pro but that stuff just does not make sense.
On the topic of Nokia, they have some serious know how of camera phones, and even though heavy lenses might not be replaceable, I think their EDoF will go a long way replacing most point and shoot camera's.
@Kwame Nkrumah
Dude, stop defending me. In case it's escaped your notice, you're a hater too. Just cuz you're on Apple's side doesn't make it right.
@Sogeking
That's like giving a surgeon a hacksaw and a chisel to do his work. sure, he might be able to pull it off but the end result wouldn't be pretty.
Professional photographers are craftsmen, and they need the best tools to do their best work.
Kind of scary that this guy is in charge of a major camera company.
Time to switch to Canon.
@mogren OK, my bad, 3am I read Nikon not Nokia.
I feel better now
@mogren - I wouldn't call Nokia a 'major camera company', are you confusing them with Nikon?
@Downpour - To be fair Nokia do put a lot of cameras, in a lot of peoples pockets.
The tech Anssi is talking about will make small cameras much better, but it will probably do the same thing to SLR's as well.
@Downpour Nokia is the largest cellphone, mp3 player and camera company in the world.
@mogren
Yesssss !!!!!
BWAHAHAHAHA. When can we expect some Sideshooting? It's been a while since the internet had a meme to make fun of.
@tonicboy
They already tried that, a few years back, with the N90:

http://www.infosyncworld.net/resources/products/nokia/nokia_n90_i04.jpg
Whats that you say?
The photo's are pixalated?
Well thats because I used Digital zoom, we used to have cameras with lenses on them that done this stuff, but the whole world realised that optical zooming was pointless, and started using their phones instead.
In Germany we call such guys 'Spinner'.
@unknown12 you call him Spinner, vee call him Schpinna.......LOL
