LG Display set to triple OLED production capacity with $226m facility expansion, effects to be felt in 2011
As usual with OLED displays, we're taking one step forward only to find there are hundreds more to go. LG has today officially announced a new $226 million investment in its OLED production facilities, which will markedly expand its ability to churn out ultrathin canvases of wonder. The not so good news, however, is that this production line is still being built -- with a planned activation in the third quarter of 2010 -- and the effects of the new cash infusion will not be felt until the second half of next year. Should you have the patience to endure such protracted roadmaps, you should be seeing a lot more from LG in the mobile display space -- where Samsung currently holds the technological lead with its Super AMOLED screens -- as well as the luxury TV market that already counts the 15-inch 15EL9500 among its numbers. The Korean manufacturer describes OLED screens as one of its "new growth engines," alongside e-paper and solar cells, so even if we may consider development slow, it's looking increasingly likely that OLED TVs will eventually make their way into the mainstream.

Come on already I want my 40" inch OLED now!!
@blubla, right... cause you got $50,000 burning a hole in your pocket, eh?
@n0ne
Any cheaper manufacturing process? OLED are expensive now, but hey, I think we'd get cheap OLEDs by 2012, and that's going to be the end of the world. LEDs haven't even been popular yet, and OLED is showing its power, but they can take it slowly, we want the best tech.
@HydroRage I think as important as a cheaper manufacturing process is a more accurate one. I'm no expert but, IIRC, a major problem with the bigger OLEDs is that the stamp on a large screen usually isn't consistent enough to make use in a TV. So, they cut it into as many smaller useful screens as they can manage.
The other issue, is supply, without any real presence @15"+ there isn't a reason for the LGs of the world to do anything but name their price and geographic point of sale (their 15" set was exclusive to their native Korea for over 6 months?). So, if costs went down 50% overnight, but the supply didn't change, you know what would happen to the price? Absolutely nothing, because as of today they can't produce more screens and the screens they have are selling, so decreasing price would be a losing proposition.
It's all about the quality of the stamp on a large screen and the number of screens produced in the short-term. If they have 2x as many screens to sell, the pricing @ 3/4 of current price might be a money making opportunity for them. Again decreasing cost in the short-term, wouldn't do anything to price (besides inspire competition).
I apologize if I could've used better terminology (especially "stamp") or been a little more accurate, again, this isn't coming from a person who has researched the tech.
Tripled from 1 to 3 units a year
Update:
LG Display%u2019s CEO Mr. Young Soo Kwon said we plan a 30 inch OLED-Television in mid 2011.
Samsung also invests in OLED and ramp up a new 5.5 gen Oled production line.
OLED- Only LG Endeavors Displays
oh wait no thats not what is stands for.
i hope more companys step forward with oled production and get the cost down. oleds look so pretty dont they.
Can you change the channel please? Three gorgeous displays and there's nothing on. I'd even settle for a shop of the Palm Pre chick...
Didn't Sony abandoned OLED? Unless LG sniff up some unicorn dust, they might be able to lowered the price significantly.
@cdf74dc9 They just produced a 7" monitor aimed at professionals for some ungodly amount of money...

If this means a 1,000,000원, ₩, 23" OLED display, I'm in.
OLED is always coming "next year" for TV's.
I would settle for a Pioneer Kuro extreme contrast that I laid eyes on at CES in 2008
@kj4gr You'll have to talk to Panasonic:
