Sony PS3 upgraded with cooler 40-nm RSX graphics chip, profits await (updated)
It's a milestone folks: the PS3 hardware is finally ready to generate a profit. The loss-leading console once estimated to cost Sony more than $800 per (losing between $241 and $307 per console sold back in 2006) has likely turned a corner thanks to a reduction in manufacturing costs. While Sony isn't saying anything on the matter, PocketNews confirms that the latest PS3 SKU -- CECH-2100A spotted in the FCC back in February -- uses an improved RSX graphics chip based on smaller 40-nm processes similar to the PS3 Slim's new 45-nm Cell processor. The result is a 15 percent decrease in console power consumption when compared to the 120GB CECH-2000A PS3 Slim sporting a 65-nm RSX. The cooler running chip allows for a stealthier heat sink and power supply in addition to a smaller cooling unit. Those changes combined with fewer adjoining chips around the shrunken RSX should make the console cheaper to build which is good news to Sony's sagging bottom line.
Update: PocketNews has confirmed with Sony that the RSX graphics chip is built using 40-nm processes (not 45-nm). Post updated to reflect the change.

Any word on when these will be available in the US? Or, if they're already out, is there a way to tell which retail boxes contain the new SKU?
Would be nice if Sony offered an low-cost or free trade-in program for the fat ps3's. Considering that the fat ps3's can't bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD. Yeah, I know.., it does LPCM blah blah blah, but it's annoying to look at the receiver and not see the TrueHD light lit up.
2nd, Sony please add mkv support already. Not allowing mkv does squat to stop people from watching pirated material. They just transcode or translate to stream via PC software and play it back anyways. So please stop being asses about it. mkv with subtitle support, got it?, good.
3rd, Doing the first two would be a nice "Hey we're sorry about yanking Install Other OS, but we had to..." public relations band-aid.
PS3, oh what you could've been if you could have run xbmc-live...
@thornd7
And just to clarify, when I say xbmc-live, I'm not talking about the media center built in the xbox 360. I'm talking about the live distro of the xbmc media center that runs on linux. Best media playback software ever. Plenty of folks out there loading it onto Acer Revo's and Asrock Ion 330's to stream 1080p to the TV. But seriously, Sony, if your now selling the console at a profit. Why not?
@thornd7
Amen brother, dual-booting XBMC and the stock PS3 OS has long been a dream of mine (*sigh* one box to rule them all). That's the MAIN reason I was pissed about the "Other-OS" debacle....oh well HTPC time
What's the power reduction between the original PS3 and this latest revision? And what about the 80GB right after BC was removed compared to this new version? I would love to know, if anyone out there is aware of the answer.
Wow a REALITY SYNTHESIZER!!! Makes me wonder what kind of hardware is our Universe running on and who is playing with it...
