Google, Sony, Intel & Logitech's TV project to be unveiled next month as Dragonpoint?
The conclusion to the sudden flurry of rumors around Sony HDTVs featuring Android, Intel Atom processors and Logitech-designed QWERTY remotes may be near, as Bloomberg Businessweek reports the project will be revealed during Google I/O next month. The latest wrinkle for the supposed product is a name, "Dragonpoint," for the new flavor of Android destined to operate on displays, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. It's obvious that Google wants search in the living room, Sony needs something to overcome the app (Samsung is back on the list of possible partners) and widget powered competition, and Intel needs a home for its CE4100 chips to show off their power outside of a demonstration for once, but we'll have to wait and see what they've cooked up to know if we need any of that in our next HDTV.

They should have called it Sogoogintech.

win.
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA
Or Ingoonytech. :)
They don't need to unveil anything, it's an android based ui on the set, sony provides the screen, intel powers the whole thing(think tablet), and logitec provides a $300+ remote(with all the goodies) to control it all.
If this is implimented well this can be the Biggest thing for TV's in the last 15+ years
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA For what it's worth, Google owns youtube, if they can manage to stream it directly with their new TV, I must say it'll be the sweetest thing. Experience. http://j.mp/google-tv-ftw

or GOogle LOgitech sONY = GO LOONY
All four companies that I deeply respect. Sadly, I don't need another $2000+ TV.
Im predicting that this will be big.
@Bud92
Totally. It'll probably be at least 70 pounds.
Oh yeah, GoogleTV.
DID EVERYONE HEAR THE NEWS?!?!?
The Courier is DEAD.
iPad is better anyway.
BACK ON POINT:
THIS WILL NOT BE BETTER THAN APPLE TV
@kb24istrash Apple TV sucks.
Long live WebOS tablets! Screw the iPad.
Nothing to see here.
Just an obvious troll, move along.
@kb24istrash
TROLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
Seriously dude, gtfo.
@kb24istrash
Have YOU not heard?
...that the BIRD is the word????
Google will continue to innovate with Android, until they have a "run on everything" OS. This will be bigger than Flash (a display technology) or Java (originally an OS that got pigeonholed into a applet/application environment ever was.
Sony is desperate to partner to gain back the marketshare they've lost to the Koreans, namely Samsung and LG, even that forces them into the strong, smothering embrace of Google.
Your last name makes me lol (lawl?).
Hmmm... There's this rumor circling around that Sony will be releasing a PSP Phone and announcing it at E3...
I wonder if this is the beginning of a relationship between Sony and Google's Android platform...
If I have enough money to spend on getting this, I will buy it because of these 4 reasons:
1. I love Sony.
2. I love Intel.
3. I love Logitech.
4. I love Google.
@hunterholder If only HTC were involved in TV's, we'd have a perfect set of 5.
UGH.
Now I have to wait to see if this is any good.
That puts a damper on my plan to get a Vizio 472XVT.
'PRECISELY' ;)
I love you google and all, but please stay off my TV its the only alone time i have from you.
hmm... Drag n' Point?
@csuftech
Oooo,like with a motion control device?
I'm not sure how I feel about an Atom being put into a TV without Nvidia's GPU to back it up.
I think I personally would have rather seen an ARM A9 with a highend PowerVR GPU, but idk.
The whole concept of putting this technology into the TV seems like a mistake to me. This tech and software has the potential to become outdated and possibly even unsupported many years before the TV has to be thrown to the curb.
I think keeping things broken out into components makes a lot more sense. Let your display be a display and let your computer or PS3 or media center extender (or whatever else new is coming down the road) be the brains of the operation.
@threxxgmailcom
I would tend to agree with you. The proprietary software on all these internet TV's is slow with very limited functionality. For this to work it has to be faster, easier to use, and upgradeable. Otherwise why bother, keep the TV a stupid monitor and use a separate box for the brains.
Unless you're looking for the ultra clean install, just the TV hanging on the wall.
@threxxgmailcom
I agree completely with you last sentence, I think some basic functions should be in there, but bringing a whole OS such as Android to it seems silly. Entertainment and media is becoming fragmented, while I agree with having choices it just doesn't always fit and some things are becoming overdone.
I think companies such as Sony need to have an aim for a certain set-up for the average consumer living room and then branch out from there with a few interchangeable options and ideas based around other rooms, a Display, a Hub, and an internet connection with a wireless router. Plus the option of a surround sound system or av receiver + speakers.
Choice is great, but the sheer amount of choice and fragmentation seems to offset its benefits, for Sony as a company, for an average consumer or for a casual consumer, the only people who benefit is the hardcore; which is good for me, but I care about everyone else too.
Let a display be a display, let an audio system be an audio system, then give some interchangeable options to what will act as a hub.
@threxxgmailcom
You know I originally thought the exact same thing....but I think to really get adoption from the masses is to integrating it into TVs. The key here is that:
1) You can turn-off the integrated solution
2) External solutions are available for bleeding edge adopters
It's a win win if they can do this, more adoption = better apps/support and the ability to design your system how you want it remains "open."
@NoFX Yeah, I agree more with you than OP. To me, I do love external components. I think every knowledgable person doesn't buy a HDTV/(DVD/BR combo depending on the date). However, some people just want an integrated solution either because of a nice, tidy form without wires (ignore wireless solution for a good analogy).
Some people will always just want to pay extra to get everything in a box even if it has more inherent weaknesses (though some times the consumer is ignorant to them) than strengths. I 95% chance I wont buy this today or in the next 5 years, but I am interested in hearing more because this could at least open up more tech to those who buy the integrated solution and to those who go a more powerful route.
I have been waiting for a compu-tv for the longest time (and I don't mean connecting a laptop or tower to the pc input). Making it android powered just raises one issue with me, will the Android Market be available on it considering Google's segregation of non-smart phones and their access to the market. I was going to get the Archos with android until I found out it doesn't have the market on it. As long as the tv is 47in and will not rape my bank account, it'll be my next tv. I currently have a 2 yr old Vizio 47in lcd.

Oops, go ahead and downrank my repeat comment.

@F117nghthawk across did not have the hardware it need to access an app market for example an application that needs accelerometer and camera will not work on device that does not have that hardware so it was not allowed access i heard the new version with android did have the right parts though and for like for TV they will likely have a separate markets for different devices
Am I just paranoid, or is that little green bastard staring out at me from every screen I see?
@ECH
I like the little green bastard. lol
@Kromatik
me too...
sony, intel and logitech? so i'm guessing unless you're a saudi arabian sheik you wont be able to afford it...
Hope it isn't Freudian, but, I misread the title as "Dissappointment"
a 4 way never ends pretty... =/
Finally! Something that actually sounds interesting, def getting one if price is right.
1. Google acquires YouTube
2. Google releases Android
3. Google kicks all other open-source initiatives that dare play YouTube videos (on TVs, heaven forbid!) in the g*n*t*ls, HARD.
4. Google and co. announce "GoogleTV"
Trick question: Where's the 'Profit!!!'?
I cannot wait for this if this is true.
All mentioned companies are f'ing amazing.
Android FTW!
for those who wants to experience android on your TV, you may not have to pay the premium price!
HDX has release a new media player that actually runs google android on your TV all for $119!

Android DLNA Squeeze TV *Drools*
At this rate I'll get Android on my TV before I can get Android on a cellphone on my CDMA carrier here in Canada :P I hope this thing comes out before I decide I need a new TV
Hmmm, let's take two of the suckiest things in home theater, Harmony remotes and TVs on which Sony places their name, and roll them into one package! What will they do next, add on a Sony "cheapest-power-supplies-known-to-man" surround receiver with Bose "icepicks-for-your-ears" speakers?
Great more ads on TV
