Entelligence: Meet H/Pre
Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he'll explore where our industry is and where it's going -- on both micro and macro levels -- with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.
Adding even more drama to an pivotal and transformative year in tech, last week HP announced it will buy Palm for the nice round sum of 1.2 billion dollars -- a move that will position it as a major player in the crowded mobile market. HP is no stranger to mobility -- the iPaq was once a defining mobile product -- but over the years the company has been unable to replicate that success with similar efforts in as the dynamic shifted from PDAs to phones. Buying Palm is a quick way of getting back in the game.This deal underscores the velocity of mobile and how that speed is affecting long term winners and losers. Many had written off Palm's relevance in the market, which might have been a correct assessment if Palm had ended up elsewhere. But I think Palm found a good home. In addition to Todd Bradley, the former CEO of Palm who now leads HP's Personal Systems Group, there are many Palm alumni at HP. This means that there should be a relatively smooth transition and overall good cultural fit. That's important because time is of the essence -- the market won't wait around for HP to integrate Palm.
HP's short term challenge is to survive the mobile market's velocity. There is precious little time to integrate Palm into HP offerings, decide what to do with existing HP products like the Windows 7-based Slate, Airlife Android smartbook, and iPaq handhelds, and create an effective marketing message while increasing customer and developer evangelism. The key will be creating close ties to other HP services for both businesses and consumers, and finding the language to create a story that can resonate across the board to HP customers and partners.
The combination of Palm's technology and brand with HP's resources and channel partners will allow HP to drive its mobile efforts forward. |
These efforts will not only apply to phones but to devices like tablets, netbooks and other connected screens. webOS works quite well on phones but it's going to be interesting to see how it plays on new emerging categories of connected devices. While "three screens and a cloud" might be archetype of the digital consumer, webOS has the potential to work on 30 screens as it reaches many different types of devices.
It's H/Pre that will ultimately have to prove itself in a fast moving market place. The core ingredients are there, but it's time to execute the recipe and sell the dish.

Ipad Killer
@techlord Wasn't the JooJoo and HP Slate both coined as the iPad killer?
@barkerja Yeah, as a pejorative.
@techlord
Err.... I wouldn't be so sure there.
I couldn't think of a more boring and uninspiring company than HP. It's a shame, I admire Palm. So i'm really not expecting much from this.
Would love to be proved wrong.
@barkerja
LOL@ joojoo being an ipad killer.
That thing could not kill a dumbphone from 2002.
HP Slate at least had potential.
@DoctarPeppar That was kind of my point.
@techlord
"iPad Killer"
whu?
We haven't even found an iPhone killer yet, and you're talking about an iPad killer?
@techlord The only true iPad killer will be the next iPad
@techlord
No it is magical device.
@sonola777 ahaha your right, there's no iPhone killer....in AT&T that is. Ever heard if the Evo? Incredible? Even the Wave! Lol iPhone has crappy specs all they got is a simple UI and publicity
@sonola777
LOL? There's more google android phones on the market then the iPhone.. And there isn't a iPhone killer? Fanboy much?
@techlord
I think palm made a wonderful choice by going with hp. After all hp along with dell make some of the best pc's on the market. Hp's adverting department, does a very good at creating a wow factor and making you want the product, not to mention their celebrity support.

I think palm wont be leaving any time soon, my next phone will most definitely be the successor to the pre. I don't know how I ever lived without my pre in the first place... the only reason I was thinking about jumping ship is because I honestly thought these were the last days of palm. Viva la palm :-). Thank god that the best mobile operating system of all time will continue to live on :-).
@macmann You'll probably be proved wrong. I'm not a fan of HP either, but Palm needed $$$ ASAP. As long as the right Palm people stay on board, webOS can stay alive. Isn't that what we want?
@techlord
Apple is by no means invincible. By teaming up with AT&T and ,leaving Verizon users In the cold, they left a huge gaping hole for android to come in and establish itself.
@DrDr As far as webos is concerned, it can kill the iPad by having a 4G or 3G tablet for $200 on contract at Sprint or Verizon.
@techlord Grammar mistake in the first sentence....
@macmann
I agree, but my hope is that hp just funnels money and reaps profit, and not just gobbles palm out of existence like they did for example with voodooPC. They should leave palm as a subsidiary because it has a good following and brand recognition for itself. Many people would associate an hp pre to be much like their laptops, cheap but run-of-the-mill
@JeremyBenthem
I like what HP did with Voodoo. Now they have high end laptops that are actually affordable, and that are designed and built in house. Voodoo laptops used to be rebranded Clevos with a custom paint job and a $1000 markup. Total waste of money that only an idiot with too much money would actually buy.
"Theres no such phone in existence that is an iPhone killer"
WTF are you on?
Ever heard of the HTC Evo 4G?
That beast is an iPhone killer, an iPad killer, and even a freakin iPhone 4G killer!
@barkerja If you fight fire with fire then it will be an Android or Palm product that will rival the iPad. It will need to be product that is easier to use because if is already familiar and leverages a similar developmental framework. The biggest thing Palm needs is a hardware refresh that is nothing like the crappy looking HP phones of late that have, thankfully, only been released in Europe.
@DoctarPeppar That HP pad was so under-powered it could only kill its own battery.
@DrDr
you are right, but my point was about the brand, basically they turned the envy into an hp product, the voodoopc branding, I just think, gives it a more unique identity compared to the rest of the shovelware-laptops they make
@macmann I think HP has been doing a great job in the past 2 years in particular watching the market and responding. The HP ENVY line (especially this past week's new introductions) appear to be the best laptops on the market overall for style and function (unless you're building a ridiculous gaming laptop) and for the price they really are way ahead of most of the competition. ASUS and Lenovo are doing a nice job too, but I have just noticed the ENVY line stick out as a great example of what HP has up its' sleeve. I think they are looking to incorporate Palm's design mantras into their corporate structure along with the WebOS software itself. Combine the emerging hardware lines that HP is rapidly perfecting with and pump money into the software ecosystem and come holiday season 2011 how many of us will be buying an HP Envy, H/Palm Pre 3, HP network printer with WebOS, and/or media center/extender with WebOS. I agree very much with Michael's "30 screen" potential, WebOS can be placed on small ARM chips in tons of product types nobody else is touching yet... and HP has the ability to do so financially.
@crichton007
What if you fight iPads with fire?
@sonola777
HD2 is much better device than the iPhone in every which way but the total number of apps. iPhone tech is pretty old already. Still a good phone but others have passed by it already.
@techlord : I have it on good authority that the iPad is a zombie and cannot be killed. If it were killed, it would simply stagger around and eat brains.
@techlord
I got that impression, too. It looks like HP was a lot more concerned about making a WebOS tablet than they were about making further WebOS phones. I'm sure there will be more phones, but I'd wager that right now nearly 100% of Palm's developers are working on tablet software.
@Chefgon I bet they already had a working demo running.
I thought it was interesting that HP cancelled the Slate right around the time they bought Palm.
@barkerja
I thought baseball bat and blender were the only real iPad killers.

@wtgig
Slightly off topic but I like that HP/Palm Hybrid logo. It looks like it's ready for action.
Gartenberg has the most pretentious description of a column I've ever read. Good god man!!!
@macmann
I actually think that the new HP ranges of laptops are some of the nicest designs outside of cupertino, and their build quality is generally rather good.
Ben
@sonola777 Almost every smart-phone out there right now is an iPhone killer. Technically speaking the iPhone is antiquated. Unfortunately there just happens to be enough people with slipping intelligence buying them because of the marketing and culture around the useless gimmick.
@Loonie
you need to use PLANTS!
@DoctarPeppar The mere thought of the hp slate being powered by Web.Os makes me happy already, without a doubt this acquisition is a very lucrative move. http://j.mp/hp-palm-duality
@uHorndog
android fanboys make me laugh
slightly better specs and a horrid OS doesnt make something an iphone killer
@Thor e Until iPhone users update to a new OS in just over a month and a new hardware version ships.
Hardware specs always improve over time, if current hardware wasn't more powerful than that released 10 months ago there'd be something wrong.
Millions of 3G users are waiting, out of contract and ready to sync all their Apps to a new model.
Oh no it's the bagel dwarf dude again.
@DoctarPeppar. Oh no it's the talking soft drink again
@Lord Vader oh no its the Lord Vader ::bow::
@Lord Vader
Doctar Pepper is not a mere soft drink!
It's liquid gold...very exquisite :)
@DoctarPeppar. That would explain why my tie-fighter incredible keeps alerting me there is too much weight on board. It seems the soft drink has betrayed me. It will pay for what it has done
@Lord Vader Are you related to Jeff Vader?
@kdilkington. It is a possibility. As much as it pains me to say it, i am the brother of Chad Vader. It was not made clear on my contract with the darkside that I would have so many siblings. The Emperor will pay for deceiving me
@Lord Vader So, is that way you threw him into the core of a reactor? That makes alot more sense...
@DoctarPeppar
Most of the bagel mans articles or "opinions" would rather belong in a diary than on the internet.
@Sean Connery
Don't say that!
Bagel man is an ANAL-lyst...his words are profound!
looking forward to some sort of fusion between HP's hardware and Palm's WebOS
@Perfect Cell Not on my watch Cell.
@Perfect Cell
Wasn't it Trunks who actually killed you? or is there some distinction because you're in perfect form?
Also, please speculate on who would win in a fight between yourself and Lord Vader.
