Flash 10.1 on Froyo goes tete-a-tete with Flash Lite 4 on Eclair: butter vs. stutter (video)
Believe it or not, your newly-upgraded Nexus One isn't the first Android smartphone to have Adobe Flash video capability, nor even the first to play said content on a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU -- Europe's been rocking the HTC Desire since April, which sports a little something called Flash Lite even on the older Android 2.1 OS. Will frozen yogurt outperform puff pastry on its home turf? Find out in a blind taste test video showdown after the break.
Please note that results are not necessarily representative of Adobe's newfound video processing prowess alone -- we hear Android 2.2 makes things speedier across the board.
Please note that results are not necessarily representative of Adobe's newfound video processing prowess alone -- we hear Android 2.2 makes things speedier across the board.

The Nexus One with Flash is boss.
Suck it, Steve.
@FragmentedAndroid Well they are DIRECTLY competing.
It's like mentioning the Lakers whenever the Celtics are brought up.
@FragmentedAndroid
You sound a little butt hurt.
It's easy to mention Apple when they're the only real direct competitor to Android on the market until W7m comes out.
@FragmentedAndroid
Idk why you have to be offended, I mean really, it's pretty pathetic. It's ok to take a little pride in your OS, especially when you have something to get exited about in a future firmware update. This is coming from an ipad owner too.
@FragmentedAndroid
How dare you complain about fanboys with a name like that
@FragmentedAndroid
"Too bad it isnt better, its a clunky slow OS with no games, horrid media player, and worse UI"
FIFY: "Too bad it is better. It's a super fast OS with plenty of games, a myriad of media player choices, and a sleek and customizable UI"
Fail troll.
@FragmentedAndroid And by the way, while you may find his comment pathetic your ENTIRE comment is UBER pathetic. Look in the mirror dude..
Fact of the matter is Android has surpassed Apple's OS. Few times will I ever publicly state my opinion as FACT. I'm comfortable doing so now.
@michaspi
One question guys...did froyo free up any of the ram? Something was wrong with the kernal and I want to know if google updated it.
@Ysleiro
"surpassed".... in the US. Now the fact is right. You can't leave a part of it out when you make a statement like that. But with the rest I agree. With 'FragmentedAndroid' a new troll is born. Guess we will see a lot more of him in the future.
@FragmentedAndroid
You're are an apple fanboy who's nickname is "FragmentedAndroid" whining about how Android fanboys bring up Apple a lot.
OUR SHIELDS CAN'T REPEL IRONY OF THAT MAGNITUDE!
@FragmentedAndroid:
I use Symbian and I have had Flash for years.
Nice try, though.
@FragmentedAndroid
Well do apple fanbois have to always say iphone has more apps or it has a nicer UI than the android devices?
@the real deal
On 2.1, in ATK, I would see an average available memory of 60mb. Now I'm seeing an average of 200mb on 2.2, Froyo.
The phone is noticeably faster. I'll be uninstalling ATK shortly as I've been playing with 2.2 all day and haven't needed to use it.
@FragmentedAndroid How do you know what Steve they are referring to. I know a few guys named Steve that are bums and would deserve that comment.
@michaspi
Be prepared for more BS in Steve's response to this.
Hey engadget,
Fully charge a Nexus one with Froyo, then have it play a Flash video. And sit it next to a fully charged iPhone 3GS and have it play the same video but an HTML5 version of it and see which one dies first. If there is no clip that is hours long just keep replaying it the moment the clip ends.
@DBG He just insulted jobs and ballmer in one go! ... Unless it's Steve Austin
@FragmentedAndroid
and how many times have you used android 2.2? oh. right. none.
Iphone has advantages
-games
-closed environment
-good media environment
android has advantages
-open
-flash 10.1
-multitasking
-diverse hardware
-nice ui
@FragmentedAndroid
Holy shit you're dumb.
Quite happy without flash thanks. It's one of those things you need. A little like an abusive partner, but once you're free you realise just how terrible they were. Flash, i'm so over you :-)
@FragmentedAndroid For the same reason that Apple fans always have to bring up Microsoft/Android/Whatever every time something about the iPhone is mentioned.
@JS But is that a fair test, really? Obviously if HTML 5 is an option, you'll prefer to use that in Android as well. The point is, it's usually not. It's not as if Android has chosen flash instead of HTML 5 -- it's chosen to give you the ability to do both. So how about this test:
Load up a Flash site on an Froyo-upgraded Nexus one, and pick a video to play. Now load up the same site on your iPhone, and stare at the blue and white cube where the video would have been.
Which viewing experience was superior?
Regardless of the battery life you get on one of those options, more options is not a bad thing. With that having been said, by all means, let's test the battery life so that we know how much flash video playback you can do on a full charge vs native video playback. In this case, It wouldn't surprise me if they've gotten it pretty close. It seems like Adobe did a pretty decent job of optimizing things . . .
@JS
Then put them both together and play an animation/game with HTML5...oh wait..
@FragmentedAndroid
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole, you gotta pay the troll toll to get in.
@JS I don't recall anyone ever claiming that Flash would outlast HTML5. The question is whether it's so bad as to not even merit the *option* on my phone. And that I highly doubt.
can someone explain how youtube ran on iphones and touches? wasnt that app flash based? Ive never owned nor dare own an iphone, so I wouldnt know. waste of money on those outdated overhyped walmart quality tech.
@FragmentedAndroid A WILD FANBOY APPEARED!
@FragmentedAndroid
well, the OS is faster than iphone os, is much smoother, the amount of games is slightly lacking, but it does have many games, plus, with the addition of flash, say hello to games on web browsers, kongregate games anyone? :D
and i wouldnt brag about itunes either...
and sense UI>anything iphone UI
@FragmentedAndroid lol you are the troll account5 its funny you already have banned twice how many names are you going to make
@JS We already know the answer.
Flash is a lot faster and more efficient than HTML5 on phones.
You can find a few videos on youtube to see how much HTML5 sucks on those devices. It's in fact much much worse than the Flash Lite 4 you see above.
@Faxmonkey
In fact, you would NOT prefer HTML5, even if it was an option. At least not yet.
You can look up some videos on youtube to see how much HTML5 sucks on those phones. It's crazy.
Flash works much, much better. Even Flash Lite works much better.
Now of course HTML5 is still new and will get better over time. But it's not some kind of magic. For now, Flash just works a lot better (and of course more efficient as well).
@michaspi Sorry, I'm hijacking your post (most already have anyway) but check out this comparison video between a Froyo N1 versus an iPhone 3GS. Google wasn't kidding with its browser claims!
@the real deal Yes now the full 512MB of RAM is clearly available, makes a HUGE difference. It's crazy fast!
@JS
Your test fails if there is no HTML5 version available. Then the Nexus One is playing content and the iPhone is doing nothing.
@michaspi
"The Nexus One with Flash is boss.
Suck it, Steve."
Man, that's not a boss, that's a KING.
@michaspi I would welcome a better power management ie, longer battery life. I could even welcome a low performance mode (available via settings) to make my RSS reading and web browsing experience longer. Android for the win! Opinions- http://bit.ly/android-flash-is-here
@michaspi
"If you market your product as the best internet experience, but have NO FLASH, YOU BLEW IT"
Android 2.2 + Flash 10.1
@michaspi
An Eclair isn't puff pastry, it's Choux....
@Ysleiro I agree Android and iPhone are pretty equivalent as platforms. Both have the same capabilities from a platform perspective. Some iPhone features are either not available in the US due to ATT and some like multi tasking are Apple's choices, but the OS's are very similar.
Personally I still prefer the iPhone navigation to the HTC Incredible which I tried out recently but I guess it's a personal aesthetic thing.
Of course in terms of sales and revenue for now iPhone is ahead of Android for now. No carrier that offers both platforms in ANY country ever sells more Android than iPhones. Not one single carrier! Now isn't that something!!
@michaspi I do wish every Android story didn't have a bunch of taunts directed at Apple. Most of us don't want an iPhone/iPad, so how this relates to it really doesn't matter.
Having said that, just a mere few months ago chumps like fragmentedandroid couldn't help themselves from going into every android story and blanketing it with insults and derision, so it is kind of humorous how things have shifted.
@JS
News flash! Froyo plays HTML 5 videos too. So why not put a N1 playing HTML 5 video next to an iPhone playing HTML 5 video?
@michaspi i am also using Symbian (nokia n97) and i am watching flash videos on my mobile phone smoothly since ever , i found that flash gives joy and happiness to people cause they ll feel that there mobile is superior to the Iphone XD
@djabootie, I'm not an Apple fanboy, but I think that the iPhone's UI can beat the crap out of Android's any day. (This is coming from a person who has used both). Even with Froyo, the UI hasn't changed much, and with iPhons OS 4, the UI changes for the better with a more efficient version of pseudo multitasking (uses less RAM, etc.). so your claims of "multitasking" and "UI" can shift to the pros for the iPhone. That means iPhone has more pros and less cons (making it the better choice). For me, when using both phones, I always go to the iPhone at the end of the day (I started using them on the same day-using Android on N1 about 5 mins. before). Android has a lot of potential, but especially with the imminent release of iPhone OS 4, Android will have to make big steps to catch up.
@michaspi
When did Symbian get flash?
Flash lite- yeah...they are NOT the same (just watch the video, lol).
@(Unverified) no those don't run on flash, they are converted to run on iphone/android which explains why not every youtube video works.
@michaspi heres something that no one wants to bring up. can he fill the screen, can he access the controls, because thats something he didn't do. can u do that without it running choppy, because it did in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zZLp1e2FiQ
@Faxmonkey That will be a better test once HTML 5 matures. It'll happen soon enough.
@michaspi
First off, according to our own informal polling, a plurality of iPhone OS users consider the lack of Flash support a feature rather than a hindrance. 27% of people we polled said they were outright glad the iPad doesn't have Flash support; another 21% didn't care if it had Flash or not. Only 10% of poll respondents said they weren't buying an iPad specifically because of its lack of Flash support.
Second, reports of Flash support on Android are mixed. Many reviewers have said the playback stutters on even moderately demanding video content, crashes fairly often, and the handset gets "piping hot" and takes a significant hit to battery life after only half an hour of use. Hmm, sounds familiar... almost as if someone laid out a logical argument against including Flash on the iPhone for precisely those reasons.
Reviewers have been careful to note that the version of Flash running on Android is only in beta, with no support for hardware acceleration. Note that this is as far as Adobe's been able to come with Flash on Android despite 100% access to the platform and 100% co-operation with Google in its implementation after plenty of time to work on it. And once Google's got Flash's big boulder chained to their foot, good luck to them when they try to update Android without having Adobe constantly in their business.
PC World's claim that Android's Flash support gives Android users access to "far more content" than the iPhone is particularly amusing -- many sites (such as Hulu) don't work on Android either, even with Flash support. Other content providers, like ABC and CBS, are either switching their sites to iPad/iPhone-friendly HTML5 or building dedicated viewer apps for the iPhone OS.
Flash is a sinking ship; if your OS's main point of differentiation from iPhone OS has nothing to do with your own tools, then bon chance, mon ami.
@MoonWalkerCTE
1) Your polling only shows one thing: Users are stupid and believe crap that's spread over the internet, instead of trying to inform themselves and find out about the facts.
2) Those facts are: Flash on mobile devices works far, far better than HTML5. Not only that, but HTML5 plain sucks on mobile devices, whether it's the iPhone, an Android or any other phone. Flash, by contrast, works quite well.
3) Before you answer, please inform yourself, instead of repeating the lies and FUD that's spread over the internet. You will see that indeed the opposite of what many people believe is true. Yes, Flash works, HTML5 sucks on mobile devices.
@the real deal Yeah it has the highmem to unlock the additional RAM
